Motivated by the trend of realizing full screens on devices such as smartphones, in this work we propose through-screen sensing with visible light for the application of fingertip air-writing. the system can recognize handwritten digits with under-screen photodiodes as the receiver. the key idea is to recognize the weak light reflected by the finger when the finger writes the digits on top of a screen. the proposed air-writing system has immunity to scene changes because it has a fixed screen light source. However, the screen is a double-edged sword as both a signal source and a noise source. We propose a data preprocessing method to reduce the interference of the screen as a noise source. We design an embedded deep learning model, a customized model ConvRNN, to model the spatial and temporal patterns in the dynamic and weak reflected signal for air-writing digits recognition. the evaluation results show that our through-screen fingertip air-writing system with visible light can achieve accuracy up to 91%. Results further show that the size of the customized ConvRNN model can be reduced by 94% with less than a 10% drop in performance. © 2021 Owner/Author.

In this research, a real-time healthcare and monitoring wireless system is developed to monitor vital signs of a wearer i.e., temperature, respiration rate, and wetting volume on a smartphone. the smart diaper consists of two main units, a detachable electronic module and a disposable printed biosensors patch deployed on a commercial diaper. Custom sensors array was designed and fabricated in a single patch through printed electronics technology by using biocompatible materials on a thermal transfer substrate. the sensors patch was designed in such a way to accurately collect the vital signs data by placing each sensor at appropriate site. Individual sensors were characterized for their electrical and mechanical properties. the overall system was tested, and data was wirelessly transmitted to a smartphone via Bluetooth. the main purpose of the proposed smart diaper is to minimize the effort of caregiver and avoid infection, rashes, and discomfort. We believe this work will open a new window for the printed electronics systems for special needs, elderly, and infant healthcare. © 2023 IEEE.

Users are surrounded by sensors that are available through various devices beyond their smartphones. However, these sensors are not fully utilized by current end-user applications. A key reason sensor use is so limited is that application developers must exactly identify how the sensor data can be used by smartphone apps. To mitigate this problem, we present SenseWear, a sensor-sharing platform that extends the functionality of a smartphone to use remote sensors with limited additional developer effort. sensor sharing has several uses, including augmenting the hardware in smartphones, creating new gestural interactions with smartphone applications, and improving application's Quality of Experience via higher-quality sensors from other devices, such as wearables. We developed and present six use cases that use remote sensors in various smartphone applications. Each extension requires adding fewer than 20 lines of code on average. Furthermore, using remote sensors did not introduce a perceptible increase in latency, and creates more convenient interaction options for smartphone apps. © 2021 acm.

Sensing and data collection platforms are the crucial components of high-quality datasets that can fuel advancements in research. However, such platforms usually are ad-hoc designs and are limited in sensor modalities. In this paper, we discuss our experience designing and deploying a multi-modal multi-node sensor data collection platform that can be utilized for various data collection tasks. the main goal of this platform is to create a modality-rich data collection platform suitable for Internet of things (IoT) applications with easy reproducibility and deployment, which can accelerate data collection and downstream research tasks.

Neuromorphic computing has been identified as an ideal candidate to exploit the potential of event-based cameras, a promising sensor for embedded computer vision. However, state-of-the-art neuromorphic models try to maximize the model performance on large platforms rather than a trade-off between memory requirements and performance. We present the first deployment of an embedded neuromorphic algorithm on Kraken, a low-power RISC-V-based SoC prototype including a neuromorphic spiking neural network (SNN) accelerator. In addition, the model employed in this paper was designed to achieve visual attention detection on event data while minimizing the neuronal populations' size and the inference latency. Experimental results show that it is possible to achieve saliency detection in event data with a delay of 32ms, maintains classification accuracy of 84.51% and consumes only 3.85mJ per second of processed input data, achieving all of this while processing input data 10 times faster than real-time. this trade-off between decision latency, power consumption, accuracy, and run time significantly outperforms those achieved by previous implementations on CPU and neuromorphic hardware. © 2023 IEEE.

Temperature sensing and control remain challenges since temperature is a critical index of the increasingly growing in agriculture and smart planting. CAN (Controller Area Network) bus, due to its high stability, anti-interference ability, timeliness, adaptability to complex industrial environment, good performance, it has been widely used industrial communication among networked instrument. In this project a STC89C52 microcontroller is selected as the master chip, using as an independent CAN controller SJA1000, PCA82C250 as the CAN bus driver to achieve CAN bus communication, designed and implemented based on CAN bus network multi-node temperature monitoring system, including the master node controller, from the node controller and PC server-side procedures. the system in real time from a node can collect temperature sensor DS18B20 temperature signal transmitted via the CAN controller SJA1000 CAN controller to the receiver, and then before sending the master node, the master node receives the signal can be displayed on the LCD screen, you can also via RS-232 bus serial transmission to the host computer program computer display, the other computer can also send commands through the host computer to control the master/slave node, enabling on-line monitoring distributed CAN bus network in site-specific farming.

this paper addresses the issues of limited functionality and insufficient scalability in intelligent connected vehicle sensor training equipment within vocational education. A sensor training platform is designed, integrating traditional and intelligent sensors, which is applicable for competitions, teaching, innovation, and research. the platform utilizes the STM32 embedded system as the main control core, combined with LabVIEW upper computer software, to construct a multi-modal data acquisition, high-precision environmental perception, and intelligent processing system. through modular hardware design, optimization of the embedded real-time system, and LabVIEW interactive design, the platform not only meets the needs of basic teaching but also supports innovative practices in engineering fields such as intelligent connected vehicles. It provides technical support for the integration of theory and practice in vocational education.

Electronic voting technology has the ability to accelerate the counting of ballots, reduce the cost of voting, and offer convenience for remote voters. Meanwhile, the efficiency of voting can be improved. Immutability, verifiability, and distribution are the main features blockchain can provide. Building an electronic voting system based on the blockchain can help to mitigate the security issues such as single-point failure and data manipulation. However, some blockchain systems are not feasible in the environment of sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a comparative analysis of blockchain-based electronic voting systems from the perspective of blockchain type, cryptography techniques, counting method, and security requirements. We also identify a possible new direction for the design of blockchain-based electronic voting systems for the reference of future research.

Geohazards due to the increase of pore water pressure are adverse geologic conditions capable of causing widespread damage or loss of property and life. To predict the potential consequences of rising water pressure in the subterranean, modest and more accurate methods are necessary. Recent advances in optical fibre sensors enable spatial continuity along with fibre, which is incapable of discrete sensing systems. In this study, the ability of a distributed optical fibre sensor embedded into three silicone rubber membranes in series has been tested for pore water pressure measuring. A backscattered reflectometer has been used to measure the strain variations along the optical fibre. Subsequently, the strain variations along the membranes have been analyzed against the water pressure. It was revealed that the measured strain readings are proportional to the applied hydrostatic pressure. Accordingly, real-time measurements can be obtained frequently from a remote location as the optical fibres can transmit the measured data for long distances. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
