Traffic gatekeeping, typically implemented using firewalls, is an essential functionality in today's networked computing systems such as desktop PCs. Traffic gatekeeping provides protection against a variety of over-the-network security attacks and can also be used to implement various communication resource management policies. With the development of technologies such as IPv6 and 6LoWPAN that pave the way for Internet-connected embedded systems and sensor networks, traffic gatekeeping will soon become a must-have for these systems as well. Towards this, we present Aegis, a lightweight, rule-based traffic gatekeeping framework for sensor networks. We present an overview of the Aegis architecture, its implementation, and two usage scenarios. © 2010 Copyright is held by the author/owner(s).

this paper presents the design, deployment, and empirical study of a wireless clinical monitoring system that collects pulse and oxygen saturation readings from patients. the primary contribution of this paper is an in-depth clinical trial that assesses the feasibility of wireless sensor networks for patient monitoring in general hospital units. We present a detailed analysis of the system reliability from a long term hospital deployment over seven months involving 41 patients in a step-down cardiology unit. the network achieved high reliability (median 99.68%, range 95.21% - 100%). the overall reliability of the system was dominated by sensing reliability of the pulse oximeters (median 80.85%, range 0.46% - 97.69%). Sensing failures usually occurred in short bursts, although longer periods were also present due to sensor disconnections. We show that the sensing reliability could be significantly improved through oversampling and by implementing a disconnection alarm system that incurs minimal intervention cost. A retrospective data analysis indicated that the system provided sufficient temporal resolution to support the detection of clinical deterioration in three patients who suffered from significant clinical events including transfer to Intensive Care Units. these results indicate the feasibility and promise of using wireless sensor networks for continuous patient monitoring and clinical deterioration detection in general hospital units. Many participatory sensing applications use data collected by participants to construct a publicmodel of a system or phenomenon. For example, a health application might compute a model relating exercise and diet to amount of weight loss. While the ultimately computed model could be public, the individual input and output data traces used to construct it may be private data of participants (e.g., their individual food intake, lifestyle choices, and resulting weight). this paper proposes and experimentally studies a technique that attempts to keep such input and output data traces private, while allowing accurate model construction. this is significantly different from perturbation-based techniques in that no noise is added. the main contribution of the paper is to show a certain data transformation at the client side that helps keeping the client data private while not introducing any additional error to model construction. We particularly focus on linear regression models which are widely used in participatory sensing applications. We use the data set from a map-based participatory sensing service to evaluate our scheme. the service in question is a green navigation service that constructs regression models from participant data to predict the fuel consumption of vehicles on road segments. We evaluate our proposed mechanism by providing empirical evidence that: i) an individual data trace is generally hard to reconstruct with any reasonable accuracy, and ii) the regression model constructed using the transformed traces has a much smaller error than one based on additive dataperturbation schemes. Geographic routing is of interest for sensor networks because a point-to-point primitive is an important building block for data-centric applications. While there is a significant body of work on geographic routing algorithms for twodimensional (2D) networks, geographic routing for practical three-dimensional (3D) sensor networks is relatively unexplored. We show that existing 2D geographic routing algorithms like CLDP/GPSR and GDSTR perform poorly in practical 3D sensor network deployments and describe GDSTR-3D, a new 3D geographic routing algorithm that uses 2-hop neighbor information in greedy forwarding and 2D convex hulls to aggregate node location information. We compare GDSTR-3D to existing algorithms, including CLDP/GPSR, GDSTR, AODV, VRR and S4, both in a real wireless sensor testbed and with TOSSIM simulations to show that GDSTR-3D is highly scalable, requires only a modest amount of storage and achieves routing stretch close to 1. Wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring and agricultural applications often face long-range requirements at low bit-rates together with large numbers of nodes. Most existing wireless sensor networks use nodes with a short-range radio and use software protocols to schedule the nodes and co-ordinate multi-hop routing in order to minimise power usage. Nodes have a relatively small radio range up to a few hundred meters that is also affected by the crop growth stage and vegetation density [2]. Disadvantages of this approach include the complexity of software protocols required to co-ordinate the nodes' behaviour and the unreliable nature of the short range radio links that requires sophisticated fault tolerance mechanisms. An alternative design solution is to use low frequency, long-range radios to build a single-hop network of a base station with satellite sensing nodes [4]. this approach has the benefits of much simpler software protocols, and that transmissions in the 40 MHz band are expected to be more reliable in outdoor settings than short range transmission in the 433 MHz or 915 MHz band used by most existing sensor network radios.

As sensor network technologies become more mature, they are increasingly being applied to a wide variety of applications, ranging from agricultural sensing to cattle, oceanic and volcanic monitoring. Significant efforts have been made in deploying and testing sensor networks resulting in unprecedented sensing capabilities. A key challenge has become how to make these emerging wireless sensor networks more sustainable and easier to maintain over increasingly prolonged deployments. In this paper, we report the findings from a one year deployment of an automated wildlife monitoring system for analyzing the social co-location patterns of European badgers (Meles meles) residing in a dense woodland environment. We describe the stages of its evolution cycle, from implementation, deployment and testing, to various iterations of software optimization, followed by hardware enhancements, which in turn triggered the need for further software optimization. We report preliminary descriptive analyses of a subset of the data collected, demonstrating the significant potential our system has to generate new insights into badger behavior. the main lessons learned were: the need to factor in the maintenance costs while designing the system;to look carefully at software and hardware interactions;the importance of a rapid initial prototype deployment (this was key to our success);and the need for continuous interaction with domain scientists which allows for unexpected optimizations. U-City is a city where diverse public information is provided through IT technology. In the past, IT infrastructure for public information was not considered in city planning. However, in recent construction of new cities, this kind of infrastructure is becoming necessary. Safety, transportation, and weather information are gathered and provided to residents through the Internet, mobile devices, etc [1]. To provide this kind of information, local governments operates U-City control center, and there is an issue of increased operating cost of the city. To solve this problem, U-City business platform is designed which can incorporate diverse commercial services. Different from public information platform, a private sector can participate and provide services. this work suggests Business Service Platform (BSP) system structure where USN-based services can be provided in U-City business platform. then, USN-based service applications are introduced on U-City platform. Business Service Platform (BSP) is a service platform of U-City for services in a private sector, and provides overall functionalities required for the creation, distribution, and billing. A service provider for U-City can develop a new application using BSP. It can also register, distribute, and handle billing using functionalities of BSP. BSP started with a target advertisement service related to public transportation information as its initial service, however USN technology in diverse areas are expected to be applied to BSP in the future. To apply such diverse USN to BSP, a general framework should be provided to integrate USN, and a system is needed that each service provider can control. In this demo, we will explain U-City service platform, which will be deployed at CHEONGRA zone of Korea, and how it is integrated to USN to provide healthcare, smart grid services, and finally major system components.

Nowadays, growing interest exists in the integration of artificial intelligence technologies into Wireless sensor Networks. However, little attention has been paid to integrate Fuzzy Rule-Based systems in these networks. the objective of this work is to optimize the design of embedded Fuzzy Rule-Based systems by means of redundant knowledge reduction considering the lack of accuracy. Results have shown that a right redundant knowledge reduction produces a great increase in time of battery discharge and a remarkable decrease in battery consumption. © 2010 Copyright is held by the author/owner(s).

this paper exemplifies principles of embedded system design as a frame of a dedicated Cyber-Physical System. After reviewing basic principles of Cyber-Physical systems as a novel approach to modeling and design in this domain, attention is focused on a real-world solution of an optoelectronic pressure sensor offering real-world demonstration of that approach. the contribution stresses those features that distinguish the real project from a demonstration case study while suggests not only to merge computing and networking technologies, but also effectively embed them in physical processes. © 2010 IEEE.
