Powertron is a web-based application that visualizes wireless sensor network deployment data. In this particular demo, we use Powertron to show application-level power data collected from more than 250 sensor nodes. In addition, we expose the routing layer of the deployment by providing real-time interactive visual representation of links, routes, and CTP-related statistics. We hope that the community will have feedback on how such a tool can be extended and generalized to fit a variety of wireless sensor network applications.

the performance of sensor network protocols is greatly affected by the network topology: the network layout, the link dynamics, and the sink placement. We propose the Expected Network Delivery (END), a protocol-independent collection metric that captures the impact of the topology on protocol performance. Our preliminary results with two collection protocols on various topologies on the MoteLab testbed show that the END metric enables a more systematic and topology-aware evaluation of protocol performance.

Power consumption is one of the most important factors in wireless sensor network research, but most simulators do not provide support for visualizing the power consumption of an entire sensor network. this makes it hard to develop, debug, and understand mechanisms and protocols based on power-saving mechanisms. We present Cooja TimeLine, an extension to Contiki's Cooja network simulator, that visualizes radio traffic and radio usage of sensor networks. Cooja TimeLine makes is possible to visually see the behavior of low-power protocols and mechanisms thereby increasing the understanding of the behavior of sensor networks. We see this as an important tool for the field moving forward.

Simulation is an essential means for evaluating WSN applications. As many WSN applications embrace in-network data processing functionalities, more sophisticated simulation tools with data-enriched test case scenarios, such as extensive environment input and accurate hardware models, are necessary. this work devises TOSSIM DB, a data-enriched WSN simulation framework, allowing unmodified applications to be evaluated as if virtually deployed in a third-party environment. Notable features of TOSSIM DB include i) integrating third-party sensor datasets as virtual test scenarios, ii) emulating the statistical properties of sensor devices, and iii) seamless integration withthe TinyOS tool-chain.

this paper demonstrates the implementation of TinyTune, a collaborative musical instrument using sensor motes. the system implementation is distributed across multiple nodes and supports the basic elements of a musical instrument, such as pitch and octave selection. the communication design for realizing a collaborative musical instrument and the available user configuration options are then presented. Other topics of discussion include: the underlying system architecture, covering the advantages of our design choices; and the extensibility of the concept, which discusses how the nodes are configured in multi-instrument environments.

Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) have been deployed in a wide range of applications with different sensing and communication requirements. As a consequence, various MAC solutions have been proposed suiting to different application characteristics [1]. However, MAC protocols are typically implemented in a monolithic fashion -- specific to a particular hardware platform. this hinders the possibility of code re-use across different platforms, which makes both implementation and porting cumbersome. It also imposes difficulties in protocol redesign when the application requirements change since the entire radio stack needs to be modified.

An important factor for the success of industrial manufacturers is a cost-efficient, robust and thus failsafe production. In this context a topic of increasing interest is the continuous monitoring of machine tools to be able to proactively react to signs of degeneration of single components and ensure the technical availability of the whole *** focus of this paper lies on the condition monitoring of ball screw drives (BSD) that are one of the main components of modern feed axes in machine tools. A low cost and easy installable wireless sensor network (WSN) concept for the monitoring of solid borne sound via MEMS acceleration sensors is proposed for this application.

this paper concerns an efficient network joining method for mobile nodes in USNs (ubiquitous sensor networks) based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. the MSBS (mobile sensor beacon setup) method is proposed for performance enhancements of the mobile nodes using the depth, traffic, and RSSI (received signal strength indication) information. the MSBS method can transfer trusted data and prevent traffic overloads at specific nodes. For the performance analysis, the information from the mobile nodes in USNs is investigated and analyzed using the proposed method. Simulation results show that the MSBS method provides an efficient network joining according to the mobility of nodes in USNs.

this paper reports a parylene-coated nMOSFET (n-type metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor)-embedded cantilever, which is suitable for the detection of chemical or biological molecules in liquid phase based on the surface stress sensing principle. the silicon cantilevers are configured along direction, and the channels of the embedded-nMOSFETs are perpendicular to the cantilevers. the fabrication process based upon POST-CMOS (complementary MOS) technology for making these devices on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers is reported. the functionality of the sensor is preliminarily proven by the detection of 1-octanethiol in absolute ethanol.

the stress and poor sleep quality of a person may be used as two of several components for predicting the onset of mental health problems, in particular depression. Ergonomie smart sensors that can determine the heart rate variations related to stress and the variability of sleep may provide unique insights to the coping behavior of stressed people. Rather than relying on wearable computers, a single smart miniature sensorthat is worn 24/7 should perform the complex embedded recognition tasks while meeting difficult battery life, wireless communications and ergonomie constraints. the development and testing of such a smart sensor is described focusing on implementation within a distributed intelligence based architecture. the manner in which the user's heart rate and the user's physical motion is used to measure stress and sleep quality is explained.
