Energy saving and reliable long distance wireless communication are essential problems in wireless sensor networks (WSN) because of limited energy availability in the wireless sensors and application-specific requirements for faster, farther, and more reliable communication. We propose use of electronically controlled variable reactance passive elements antenna array (PEAA) [1, 2] for use with sensor nodes to achieve better wireless coverage and reduce energy expenditure during transmission and reception of data over wireless communications. Although the idea of using PEAA for WSN is not new [3] In contrast, we have developed and tested SAntArray: a working prototype of the antenna for WSN that has a novel digital direction *** tests show energy savings and radio coverage increase when PEAA is used. the communication distance is increased four times in comparison to a regular sensor node with an onboard omnidirectional antenna with the same energy consumption.

With an accurate estimate of the robot pose, robots will be capable of navigating in the environment autonomously and efficiently. In this paper, sensor fusion models that incorporate gyroscope, accelerometer and ultrasound sensors are presented. the designed models utilize Extended Kalman Filter to compensate biases from those inertial measurement units and postures and poses of the robot can then be estimated. An underwater robot comprises of a DSP-based embedded system, accelerometer, gyroscope and underwater ultrasound sensors are also designed for verification of the models proposed. Experiment results show the presented approach could help to localize underwater robot with localization errors within centimeters.

Data gathering is one of the most common applications of wireless sensor networks. Such networks are an extremely useful tool for researchers in various domains since they allow for measurements in unaccessible locations, e.g., on mountains, glaciers or in animal habitats. At the same time, the deployment and maintenance of such sites is time consuming and costly. Network reprogramming protocols allow to distribute code updates over the wireless network, which prolongs the interval between human intervention at the deployment *** network reprogramming has been studied extensively in the literature, existing bulk data dissemination protocols often do not work well together with data gathering applications which operate at low duty-cycles. We present a reliable data dissemination protocol designed for energy-efficient operation at low duty-cycles. A simple remote procedure call mechanism is used to control and monitor single nodes during the update process, which provides maximal observability during network reprogramming.

Advances in embedded computing systems have resulted in the emergence of Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs), which provide unique opportunities for sensing physical environment of our daily lives. ZigBee-compliant WSN platforms have been proposed for Healthcare monitoring, smart home, industrial monitoring and sensor, and other applications. In this paper, we using TI CC2430 and CC2431 chipsets with Z-Stack designed an outdoor patients' healthcare monitoring system, for tracking patients, and helping doctors and nurses to keep tabs on their patients' health remotely. Furthermore, several important techniques are elaborated, including reliable communication, localization algorithm and backup power, which can enhance the system performance. Finally, presented some suggestions for future development are presented by us.

Wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring and agricultural applications often face long-range requirements at low bit-rates together with large numbers of nodes. Most existing wireless sensor networks use nodes with a short-range radio and use software protocols to schedule the nodes and co-ordinate multi-hop routing in order to minimise power usage. Nodes have a relatively small radio range up to a few hundred meters that is also affected by the crop growth stage and vegetation density [2]. Disadvantages of this approach include the complexity of software protocols required to co-ordinate the nodes' behaviour and the unreliable nature of the short range radio links that requires sophisticated fault tolerance mechanisms. An alternative design solution is to use low frequency, long-range radios to build a single-hop network of a base station with satellite sensing nodes [4]. this approach has the benefits of much simpler software protocols, and that transmissions in the 40 MHz band are expected to be more reliable in outdoor settings than short range transmission in the 433 MHz or 915 MHz band used by most existing sensor network radios.

this paper presents a new car following system to track a preceding car and maintain a desired safe distance based on a laser imaging, detection, and ranging (LiDAR) sensor. the proposed system has the ability of lane change, including longitudinal and lateral control. To accomplish the car following sensing task, environment information provided by in-vehicle Lidar and monocular vision is used. A camera is an auxiliary device to map Lidar data into the output image and verify the detection ability of LiDAR. the LiDAR and camera sensors are installed on a demonstrated vehicle, and the LiDAR sensor which has one-dimensional scanning ability can measure the relative distance of the vehicle from a preceding vehicle by scanning the horizontal plane with laser beams. the relative position is processed and estimated by random sample consensus (RANSAC) method and geometry relation, and then the heading and speed of vehicle are automatically operated by an embedded processor. the speed variation tracking is implemented by fuzzy-PI algorithm, and the pure pursuit method is applied as the steering control strategy to keep up with the trajectory in lateral control. Environmental clutter becomes the main challenge in data processing when LiDAR tries to track the desired vehicle. Besides, a comfortable requirement of vehicle control is also considered and complied with the rule of ISO 2631. thus, the proposed system integrates engine vacuum connected to throttle and active steering system with embedded ahead control algorithms into a powerful car following system in practice, which has been verified in experiments using two vehicles. the mobile hardware are built with three embedded systems using X86 processor in Linux system, and furthermore the sensing data collection is accomplished by Ethernet interface. the proposed system is carried out with theoretical application and hardware integration, and the result shows car following approach applicability.

When using wireless sensor networks for real-time data transmission, some critical points should be considered. Restricted computational power, memory limitations, narrow bandwidth and energy supplied present strong limits in sensor nodes. therefore, maximizing network lifetime and minimizing energy consumption are always optimization goals. To reduce the energy consumption of the sensor network during image transmission, an energy efficient image compression scheme is proposed. the image compression scheme reduces the required memory. To address the abovementioned concerns, in this paper we describe an approach of image transmission in WSNs, taking advantage of JPEG2000 still image compression standard and using MATLAB and C from Jasper. JPEG2000 provides a practical set of features, not necessarily available in the previous standards. these features were achieved using techniques: the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), and embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation (EBCOT). Performance of the proposed image compression scheme is investigated with respect to image quality and energy consumption. Simulation results are presented and show that the proposed scheme optimizes network lifetime and reduces significantly the amount of required memory by analyzing the functional influence of each parameter of this distributed image compression algorithm.

sensor networks hold the promise of facilitating large-scale and real-time data processing in complex environments. Data security is an extremely crucial issue for many sensor network applications. Data hiding technique, which is considered less consumptive than cryptology, is introduced to guarantee the security of the sensitive data in wireless sensor networks. However, the low invisibility of such schemes has always been the most fatal weaknesses. In this paper, we propose an innovative data hiding method. Sensitive data are uniformly and randomly embedded into the ordinary data by using the space-efficient randomized data structure characteristic of Bloom Filter. Full embedding and simple fixed embedding laws are avoided. Any intermediate nodes of the network and eavesdroppers are more difficult to detect the existence of sensitive data. Experimental results and performance analysis demonstrate that the proposed scheme can efficiently protect the sensitive data, without affecting the transmission and usability of the ordinary data. At the same time, this method also has little additional energy consumption.

the rapidly developing wireless communications and embedded micro-electro systems has made wireless sensor networks (WSN) possible for extensive applications. However, the security of the WSN becomes one of the major concerns in those applications. Elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) prominently provides solid potential for WSN security with its small key size and its high security strength. However, in order to satisfy the full range of applications there is an urgent need to reduce key calculation time. Due to scalar multiplication operation in ECC takes about 80% of key calculation time on WSN, this paper we proposed a fuzzy controller for a dynamic window allowing the calculation processing to run under optimum conditions with the balanced for RAM and ROM at the sensor node within WSN. the whole quality of Service (QoS) is improved, in particular the power consuming is more efficiently. the simulation results showed that the average calculation time decreased by approximately 15% in comparison to traditional algorithms in an ECC WSN.

U-City is a city where diverse public information is provided through IT technology. In the past, IT infrastructure for public information was not considered in city planning. However, in recent construction of new cities, this kind of infrastructure is becoming necessary. Safety, transportation, and weather information are gathered and provided to residents through the Internet, mobile devices, etc [1]. To provide this kind of information, local governments operates U-City control center, and there is an issue of increased operating cost of the city. To solve this problem, U-City business platform is designed which can incorporate diverse commercial services. Different from public information platform, a private sector can participate and provide services. this work suggests Business Service Platform (BSP) system structure where USN-based services can be provided in U-City business platform. then, USN-based service applications are introduced on U-City platform. Business Service Platform (BSP) is a service platform of U-City for services in a private sector, and provides overall functionalities required for the creation, distribution, and billing. A service provider for U-City can develop a new application using BSP. It can also register, distribute, and handle billing using functionalities of BSP. BSP started with a target advertisement service related to public transportation information as its initial service, however USN technology in diverse areas are expected to be applied to BSP in the future. To apply such diverse USN to BSP, a general framework should be provided to integrate USN, and a system is needed that each service provider can control. In this demo, we will explain U-City service platform, which will be deployed at CHEONGRA zone of Korea, and how it is integrated to USN to provide healthcare, smart grid services, and finally major system components.
