Recent mobile devices are integrated with various kinds of sensors, thereby allowing people to capture what stationary sensing devices cannot easily acquire. We term the systemsthat exploit the ubiquity of the users of such devices Human Probes. To realize a Human-Probe environment, our research group has examined the usefulness of pressure sensors embedded in shoes [2]. In this demonstration, we present our recent work that extends our previous research on embedded pressure sensors by considering complimentary uses of accelerometers so as to measure walkability in our everyday spaces. Pressure sensors and accelerometers are similarly useful for capturing the motion of pedestrians;however, the close examination of the signals from bothsensors reveals the strengths and the weaknesses of each, and suggests the possibility of their complimentary use to support Human Probes.

Simultaneous transmissions in the same radio range of a wireless sensor network causes interference and packets are lost. Knowing the interference pattern in advance, the transmission links can be scheduled so that no packet is lost due to interference and all streams meet their deadlines. this problem is NP-hard in general and therefore we resort to heuristics. In this paper, we present a set of heuristics for scheduling periodic, real-time data streams over a wireless sensor network. Simulation results show that our heuristics produce feasible schedules in almost all cases.

this paper illustrates both challenges and benefits found in expanding a traditional game concept to a situated environment with a distributed set of wireless sensing modules. Our pervasive game equivalent of the Whac-A-Mole game, Whac-A-Bee, retains the find-and-seek aspects of the original game while extending the location, the number of players, and the time-span in which it can be played. We discuss the obstacles met during this work, and specifically address challenges in making the game robust and flexible enough for large and long-term deployments in unknown territory.

We present TinyVM, a Virtual Machine (VM) for nesC and C applications on sensor motes. TinyVM executes compressed bytecode on-the-fly to conserve memory. To facilitate creation of application-specific VMs, partitioning of applications into bytecode, VM instruction set extensions and machine-code is supported. We provide experimental evidence for the efficiency of TinyVM on Atmega128-based motes and on the Intel iMote2. TinyVM also runs on Windows and Linux, and we are currently porting TinyVM to Telos-based motes.

Physicalnet is a fully implemented middleware for wireless networks of sensors and actuators (WNSAs). Based on a lightweight service oriented architecture (SOA), Physicalnet allows the users to create administrative domains, in which owners of the nodes can share and protect their resources so that multiple applications can simultaneously use the same sensors and actuators with conflict resolution mechanisms. By using a general programming abstraction, named "bundle", Physicalnet allows programming across networks and administrative domains, and has a good support for node mobility. Other features of Physicalnet include using the Java language, supporting heterogeneous devices, and providing a chain of user tools.

Radio spectrum has turned into a precious natural resource from free goods due to the rapid development of wireless communication technology. In order to efficiently utilize radio spectrum, a spectrum policy should be enough appropriate to create new industries and new technologies. From this point of view, we have developed a distributed spectrum sensing system which collects dense information of spectrum usage over large area. In this work, we discuss the requirements and the design of the distributed spectrum sensing system.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are often advertised with high sensing accuracy, long lifetime, and easy deployment. However, they are still not widely used in environmental research due to of poor tool support and high complexity. A wider use of WSNs in field science would enable researchers to address scientific questions that are infeasible today. To address this issue, we designed and prototyped a Software Factory for WSNs that hides the complexity of software development for embeddedsystems. It exposes a visual domain-specific modeling language and supports code generation for resource constrained devices. the proposed Software Factory simplifies the integration of domain experts into the development process, making WSNs more attractive as a tool for researchers from outside of the computer science field. this could lead to a wider adoption of WSNs in field sciences.

We present a method to extract topology information from detection events of mobile entities moving through a network of binary sensors. We extract the topological structure of possible paths in the network by analyzing the time correlation of events at different sensors. the histograms of time delays between any two sensors contain the necessary information to reconstruct the network topology. this data is heavily corrupted by noise due to multiple agents in the network. We therefore use a mixture model of multiple Gaussian and a uniform distribution to explicitly isolate the noise. Our algorithm yields a graph representing the topology of our sensor network along with average travel time between nodes.

Soil contains vast ecosystemsthat play a key role in the Earth's water and nutrient cycles, but scientists cannot currently collect the high-resolution data required to fully understand them. In this paper, we present Suelo, an embeddednetworked sensing system designed for soil monitoring. An important challenge for Suelo is that many soil sensors are inherently fragile and often produce invalid or uncalibrated data. therefore Suelo is an assisted sensing system: it actively requests the help of a human when necessary to validate, calibrate, repair, or replace sensors. this approach allows us to use available sensors without sacrificing data integrity, while minimizing the human resources required. We tested our system in multiple real soil monitoring deployments and demonstrate that, using human assistance, Suelo produced 91% fewer false negatives and false positives than common fault detection solutions on these datasets.

RFID sensor networks comprising batteryless devices that are passively powered by RFID readers present exciting possibilities for ubiquitous computing applications. they require minimal maintenance, are cheap to manufacture and have small form factor. However, their lack of autonomy due to the need for constant power from an RFID reader hinders their deployment. We demonstrate that RFIDs augmented with ambient energy-harvesting capabilities may be used as a first-class sensor platform, allowing them to operate untethered from reader infrastructure. Specifically, we show that a CRFID-based accelerometer sensor can provide both real-time and delayed access to time-stamped sensor data when provided with a small amount of solar energy. the data is collected using a standard RFID reader and displayed in a graphical interface.
