this paper presents and evaluates two principles for wireless routing protocols. the first is datapath validation: data traffic quickly discovers and fixes routing inconsistencies. the second is adaptive beaconing: extending the Trickle algorithm to routing control traffic reduces route repair latency and sends fewer beacons. We evaluate datapath validation and adaptive beaconing in CTP Noe, a sensor network tree collection protocol. We use 12 different testbeds ranging in size from 20-310 nodes, comprising seven platforms, and six different link layers, on both interference-free and interference-prone channels. In all cases, CTP Noe delivers > 90% of packets. Many experiments achieve 99.9%. Compared to standard beaconing, CTP Noe sends 73% fewer beacons while reducing topology repair latency by 99.8%. Finally, when using low-power link layers, CTP Noe has duty cycles of 3% while supporting aggregate loads of 30 packets/minute.

embedded systems are used to implement a large number of network devices. We research the networked embedded system architecture, and propose a layered structure and a function mapping method of the Data Link Layer. the function mapping method can be used to design the low-cost and flexible embedded systems. We introduce how to design the buffer and interface layers to enhance the performance and portability of embedded systems. As an application, we design and implement a Cable Modem based on DOCSIS.

We present a general framework for building mobility models for floating objects. Such models are useful for studying the behavior of wireless sensors that are deployed to drift along rivers, lakes, oceans, or debris flows. these sensors may be used to track toxic wastes in the water, to study hydrology, or to warn natural hazards. While existing mobility models concentrate on modeling objects moving in autonomy on firm grounds, they cannot be used to describe floating objects that move along with the water flows passively. To build mobility models for such floating objects, our framework entails the use of GPS-equipped wireless sensors that drift along with the water and record the path information. the collected information is converted into a two-dimensional map for modeling the behavior of the floating objects, e.g. generating the simulated drifting paths of the objects. As far as we know, this is the first work on building the mobility models for floating objects.

the use of asynchronous duty-cycling in wireless sensor network MAC protocols is common, since it can greatly reduce energy consumption and requires no clock synchronization. However, existing systems using asynchronous duty-cycling do not efficiently support broadcast-based communication that may be used, for example, in route discovery or in network-wide queries or information dissemination. In this paper, we present the design and evaluation of ADB (Asynchronous Duty-cycle Broadcasting), a new protocol for efficient multihop broadcast in wireless sensor networks using asynchronous duty-cycling. ADB differs from traditional multihop broadcast protocols that operate above the MAC layer, in that it is integrated with the MAC layer to exploit information only available at this layer. Rather than treating the data transmission from a node to all of its neighbors as the basic unit of progress for the multihop broadcast, ADB dynamically optimizes the broadcast at the level of transmission to each individual neighbor of a node, as the neighbors asynchronously wakeup. We evaluate ADB both through ns-2 simulations and through measurements in a testbed of MICAz motes using TinyOS, and compare its performance to multihop broadcast based on X-MAC and on RI-MAC. In both evaluations, ADB substantially reduced energy consumption, network load, and delivery latency compared to other protocols, while achieving over 99% delivery ratio.

Motivated by the needs of precise forest inventory and real-time surveillance for ecosystem management, in this paper we present GreenOrbs [2], a wireless sensor network system and its application for canopy closure estimates. Both the hardware and software designs of GreenOrbs are tailored for sensing in wild environments without human supervision, including a firm weatherproof enclosure of sensor motes and a light-weight mechanism for node state monitoring and data collection. By incorporating a pre-deployment training process as well as a distributed calibration method, the estimates of canopy closure stay accurate and consistent against uncertain sensory data and dynamic environments. We have implemented a prototype system of GreenOrbs and carried out multiple rounds of deployments. the evaluation results demonstrate that GreenOrbs outperforms the conventional approaches for canopy closure estimates. Some early experiences are reported in this paper.

Due to lacking capability of simultaneously gathering information from the embedded system devices and networks, neither WSN simulators nor testbeds could explain how an abnormal exception in the embedded system would influence the network behaviors, and how the network congestion may possibly damage the health of the system on a single node. In this paper, to observe the WSN behavior from both network view and implementation view, we propose a new scheme which is able to improve the WSN testability. the proposed new approach is characterized with a network emulator based testbed, which provides a method of acquiring runtime information from embedded systems and from the visible and controllable environment connected with the real wireless sensor node devices but RF modules. A prototype of the proposed scheme has been implemented with XILINX FPGA and proved to be capable of providing the designers or researchers with more convenience in testing and debugging their application implementations on a more realistic and accurate platform.

the extraction of temporal characteristics from sensor data streams can reveal important properties about the sensed events. Knowledge of temporal characteristics in applications where sensed events tend to periodically repeat, call provide a great deal of information towards identifying patterns, building models and using the timing information to actuate and provide services. In this paper we outline a methodology for extracting the temporal properties, in terms of start time and duration, of sensor data. streams that can be used in applications such as human, habitat, environmental and traffic monitoring where sensed events repeat over a time window Its application is demonstrated on a 30-day dataset collected from one of our assisted living sensor network deployments

Energy in sensor networks is distributed and nontransferable. Over time, differences in energy availability across the network are likely to arise. Protocols such as routing engines can concentrate energy load at certain nodes. Variations in incident sunlight can produce different solar charging rates at different nodes. Because many sensor network applications require nodes collaborate - to ensure complete sensor coverage or route data to the network's edge - a small set of nodes threatened by low energy availability can have a disproportionate impact on the entire network. For example, the loss of a single sink node may render the application unable to communicate with all the other nodes. However, network density provides redundancy that can be exploited to control the distribution of energy load. Multiple possible routing paths may link a node and the sink, or several sinks may exist. Adjusting MAC-level parameters may allow a node to conserve energy by forcing additional load on its neighbors. Inputs from multiple sensors may prove redundant to the application, allowing some sensors to be disabled or operated at reduced fidelity, saving power at those nodes. these choices imply that energy load can be tuned to match availability, and this tuning can extend the useful lifetime of the network. Effective distributed energy management requires network-wide awareness of energy availability and load integrated with algorithms guiding protocols toward states producing longer lifetimes or higher node duty-cycles. Intelligent Distributed Energy Awareness (IDEA) is a sensor network service that can be used by both protocols and applications. Given the current energy availability and a set of protocol states, each with different implications for network-wide energy consumption, IDEA projects future energy availability in order to make the best choice. Clock synchronization is highly desirable in many sensor networking applications. It enables event ordering, coordinated actuation, energy-efficient communication and duty cycling. this paper presents a novel low-power hardware module for achieving global clock synchronization by tuning to the magnetic field radiating from existing AC power lines. this signal can be used as a global clock source for battery-operated sensor nodes to eliminate drift between nodes over time even when they are not passing messages. With this scheme, each receiver is frequency-locked with each other, but there is typically a phase-offset between them. Since these phase offsets tend to be constant, a higher-level compensation protocol can be used to globally synchronize a sensor network. We present the design of an LC tank receiver circuit tuned to the AC 60Hz signal which we call a Syntonistor. the Syntonistor incorporates a low-power micro-controller that filters the signal induced from AC power lines generating a pulse-per-second output for easy interfacing with sensor nodes. the hardware consumes less than 58 mu W which is 2-3 times lower than the idle state of most sensor networking MAC protocols. Next, we evaluate a software clock-recovery technique running on the local micro-controller that minimizes timing jitter and provides robustness to noise. Finally, we provide a protocol that sets a global notion of time by accounting for phase-offsets. We evaluate the synchronization accuracy and energy performance as compared to in-band message passing schemes. the use of out-of-band signals for clock synchronization has the useful property of decoupling the synchronization scheme from any particular MAC protocol. Our experiments show that over a 11 day period, eight nodes distributed across the floor of the CIC building on Carnegie Mellon's campus remained synchronized on an average to less than 1ms without exchanging any radio messages beyond the initialization phase.

Wireless sensor networks have been confirmed as a valuable asset to deploy in an increasing number of real-world business scenarios. the existence of several run-time reconfigurable component models for networked embedded systems facilitates this as they enable developers to build complete end-to-end systems composed of reusable building blocks. However, the integration of sensor networks with enterprise environments is not straightforward as it requires that several long-standing challenges related to data quality management and security be addressed. this paper advocates a high-level policy-based approach to more easily support the specification and enforcement of these non-functional requirements in existing component compositions for network embedded systems. We have realized and evaluated a prototype of this framework for the LooCI component model. Copyright 2009 acm.
