A specific application for wastewater monitoring and actuation, called CSOnet, deployed city-wide in a mid-sized US city, South Bend, Indiana, posed some challenges to a time synchronization protocol. the nodes in CSOnet have a low duty cycle (2% in current deployment) and use an external clock, called the Real Time Clock (RTC), for triggering the sleep and the wake-up. the RTC has a very low drift (2 ppm) over the wide range of temperature fluctuations that the CSOnet nodes have, while having a low power consumption (0.66 mW). However, these clocks will still have to be synchronized occasionally during the long lifetime of the CSOnet nodes and this was the problem we confronted with our time synchronization protocol. the RTC to fit within the power and the cost constraints makes the tradeoff of having a coarse time granularity of only 1 second. therefore, it is not sufficient to synchronize the RTC itself-that would mean a synchronization error of up to 1 second would be possible even with a perfect synchronization protocol. this would be unacceptable for the low duty cycle operation-each node stays awake for only 6 seconds in a 5 minute time window. this was the first of three challenges for time synchronization. the second challenge is that the synchronization has to be extremely fast since ideally the entire network should be synchronized during the 6 second wake-up period. third, the long range radio used for the metropolitan-scale CSOnet does not make its radio stack software available, as is seen with several other radios for long-range ISM band RF communication. therefore, a common technique for time synchronization-MAC layer time-stamping-cannot be used. Additionally, MAC layer time-stamping is known to be problematic with high speed radios (even at 250 kbps). We solve these challenges and design a synchronization protocol called HARMONIA. Traffic delays and congestion are a major source of inefficiency, wasted fuel, and commuter frustration. Measuring and localizing these delays, and routing users around them, is an important step towards reducing the time people spend stuck in traffic. As others have noted, the proliferation of commodity smartphones that can provide location estimates using a variety of sensors-GPS, WiFi, and/or cellular triangulation-opens up the attractive possibility of using position samples from drivers' phones to monitor traffic delays at a fine spatio-temporal granularity. this paper presents VTrack, a system for travel time estimation using this sensor data that addresses two key challenges: energy consumption and sensor unreliability. While GPS provides highly accurate location estimates, it has several limitations: some phones don't have GPS at all, the GPS sensor doesn't work in "urban canyons" (tall buildings and tunnels) or when the phone is inside a pocket, and the GPS on many phones is power-hungry and drains the battery quickly. In these cases, VTrack can use alternative, less energy-hungry but noisier sensors like WiFi to estimate both a user's trajectory and travel time along the route. VTrack uses a hidden Markov model (HMM)-based map matching scheme and travel time estimation method that interpolates sparse data to identify the most probable road segments driven by the user and to attribute travel times to those segments. We present experimental results from real drive data and WiFi access point sightings gathered from a deployment on several cars. We show that VTrack can tolerate significant noise and outages in these location estimates, and still successfully identify delay-prone segments, and provide accurate enough delays for delay-aware routing algorithms. We also study the best sampling strategies for WiFi and GPS sensors for different energy cost regimes.

One important application of Body sensor Networks is action recognition. Action recognition often implicitly requires partitioning the sensor data into intervals, then labeling the partitions according to the actions each represents or as a non-action. the temporal partitioning stage is called segmentation and the labeling is called classification. While many effective methods exist for classification, segmentation remains problematic. We present a technique inspired by continuous speech recognition that combines segmentation and classification using Hidden Markov Models. this technique is distributed and only involves limited data sharing between sensor nodes, We show the results of this technique and the bandwidth savings over full data transmission.

Considerable research has been performed in applying run-time reconfigurable component models to the domain of wireless sensor networks. the ability to dynamically deploy and reconfigure software components has clear advantages in sensor network deployments, which are typically large in scale and expected to operate for long periods in the face of node mobility, dynamic environmental conditions and changing application requirements. To date, research on component and binding models for sensor networks has primarily focused on the development of specialized component models that are optimized for use in resource-constrained environments. However, current approaches impose significant overhead upon developers and tend to use inflexible binding models based on remote procedure calls. To address these concerns, we introduce a novel component and binding model for networked embedded systems (LooCI). LooCI components are designed to impose minimal additional overhead on developers. Furthermore, LooCI components use a novel event-based binding model that allows developers to model rich component interactions, while providing support for easy interception, re-wiring and re-use. A prototype implementation of our component and binding model has been realised for the SunSPOT platform. Our preliminary evaluation shows that LooCI has an acceptable memory footprint and imposes minimal overhead on developers. Copyright 2009 acm.

the most obvious benefit from networked sensors in distributed control system is the reduction of cables, which means savings in cost and easiness in deployment and maintenance. Some current available sensor standards and protocols are complicate and cost for most industrial applications and low performance for real-time control systems. In this paper we propose a light-weight CAN-like sensor network protocol for real-time distributed control system with some unique features. Based on a novel event/action model, the protocol provides a resilient and scalable application layer that is independent with sensor developers and sensor users. the data link layer supports both event and master/slave communication mode, which greatly improves the real-time performance. An FPGA-based reference implementation of protocol stack is also validated on a Cyclone II development boards.

We consider a system consisting of a set of mobile sensors. they are disseminated in a region of interest and their mobility is controlled (as opposed to mobility imposed by the entity on which they are embedded). A routing protocol in this context enables any point of the region to be reached starting from any node, regardless of the initial sensor deployment. this operation involves message forwarding and/or sensor motion. In this paper we present GRASP, a GReedy stAteless Routing Protocol for mobile wireless sensor networks (WSN). GRASP is simple and independent from the underlying communication model, but still provides results close to the optimal, with respect to the self-deployment of sensors over a given region. It ensures that (i) routing is always possible in a mobile WSN irrespective of the number of sensors, and (ii) above a given number of sensors in a considered zone the protocol eventually enables the routing to no longer require sensors to move, which yields to self-deployment. With GRASP, sensors autonomously reach a stable full coverage following geometrical patterns. this requires only 1.5 times the optimal number of sensors to cover a region. A theoretical analysis of convergence proves these properties. Simulation results matching the analysis are also presented.

Visual sensor networks bring together the research domains of smart cameras and wireless sensor networks. Focusing on power consumption and long-term deployments, typical sensor nodes come with limited computing power and low communication performance. A smart camera that performs on-board video analysis and exchanges data with adjacent nodes has higher computation and communication requirements. therefore, a main challenge in visual sensor networks is to find a tradeoff between performance and power consumption. this work presents a camera prototype equipped with a low- and a high-performance radio allowing to trade communication performance for power consumption by selecting the appropriate device. Radio power consumption is evaluated for different modes of operation and a power model for clusters of dual-radio cameras is presented.

For the systems in which missing observation occurs, we drive a new estimator which uses a priori information in state update and a posteriori information in covariance update. the resulting filter is a minimum variance filter which minimizes the expectation of error covariance with respect to noises and the random variable representing missing observation. the merit of presented filter is that the covariance update equation does not include random variable representing missing observation and hence the covariance can be calculated off-line in time invariant system. © 2009 IEEE.
