Recent mobile devices are integrated with various kinds of sensors, thereby allowing people to capture what stationary sensing devices cannot easily acquire. We term the systemsthat exploit the ubiquity of the users of such devices Human Probes. To realize a Human-Probe environment, our research group has examined the usefulness of pressure sensors embedded in shoes [2]. In this demonstration, we present our recent work that extends our previous research on embedded pressure sensors by considering complimentary uses of accelerometers so as to measure walkability in our everyday spaces. Pressure sensors and accelerometers are similarly useful for capturing the motion of pedestrians; however, the close examination of the signals from bothsensors reveals the strengths and the weaknesses of each, and suggests the possibility of their complimentary use to support Human Probes.

the sensorFly system is a novel, low-cost, miniature controlled-mobile aerial sensor network. Mobility permits the network to be autonomous in deployment, maintenance and adapting to the environment, overcoming the reliance of traditionally fixed networks on human intervention, large infrastructure or inefficient random methods. We wish to demonstrate the novel hardware design, flight control and collaborative localization capabilities of the sensorFly system. To the best of our knowledge, this is the lightest realized flying sensor system in existence, with a weight of 30g and low mass production cost of ~$100. Developed under severe weight, cost, energy and processing power constraints, we show that this system is a viable and capable mobile sensor network platform.

this paper illustrates both challenges and benefits found in expanding a traditional game concept to a situated environment with a distributed set of wireless sensing modules. Our pervasive game equivalent of the Whac-A-Mole game, Whac-A-Bee, retains the find-and-seek aspects of the original game while extending the location, the number of players, and the time-span in which it can be played. We discuss the obstacles met during this work, and specifically address challenges in making the game robust and flexible enough for large and long-term deployments in unknown territory.

Macroprogramming abstractions provide abstract distributed data structures to simplify the programming of wireless embedded networks. However, none of the current macroprogramming systems provide debugging support for application development. We have developed MDB, a GDB-like post-mortem debugger for the MacroLab macroprogramming abstraction. In this demonstration, we show how MDB enables application development and debugging at a single level of abstraction. MDB eliminates the need for a programmer to reason about low-level event traces and message passing protocols, instead allowing debugging in terms of abstract data types. We expect MDB to fill a crucial link in the development cycle as a macroprogram progresses from the drawing board to real deployment.

the NISAT testbed consists of a center server and many test units. the test units probe the internal interconnected signals inside the motes with extra hardware sniffers. the server gathers, parses and analyzes all data from test units to obtain the information on the network behavior. By adopting the passive sniffing mechanism, NISAT has no side effect on the normal behavior of sensor networks, and it is transparent to the software running on motes. NISAT offers accurate and precise test data for the studies on sensor networks, especially for the high-precision performance measurements and black-box tests without source codes.

the most obvious benefit from networkedsensors in distributed control system is the reduction of cables, which means savings in cost and easiness in deployment and maintenance. Some current available sensor standards and protocols are complicate and cost for most industrial applications and low performance for real-time control systems. In this paper we propose a light-weight CAN-like sensor network protocol for real-time distributed control system with some unique features. Based on a novel event/action model, the protocol provides a resilient and scalable application layer that is independent withsensor developers and sensor users. the data link layer supports both event and master/slave communication mode, which greatly improves the real-time performance. An FPGA-based reference implementation of protocol stack is also validated on a Cyclone II development boards.

Wireless sensor Networks enable scientists to collect information about the environment with a granularity unseen before, while providing numerous challenges to software designers. Since sensor devices are often powered by small batteries, which take considerable effort to replace, it is of major importance to use energy carefully. We present two efficient ways of extending the lifetime of such systems: 1. an adaptive duty cycling protocol and 2. an adaptive data management protocol. Further, we present some details of our deployed sensor network in Wytham Woods, Oxfordshire.

Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) based sensing systems are effective in structural health monitoring. However, the usable range and accuracy of these sensors are severely affected due to the non-linearity exhibited in their input-output characteristics. this work presents a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based non-linearity compensator of a LVDT sensor. Functional Link Artificial Neural Network (FLANN), an improved version of the conventional neural networks has been implemented for simplicity. the result obtained from the FPGA implementation is in good agreement withthe simulation result in MATLAB.

Wireless networked control system (WINCS), based on distributed control systems of wireless network, integrate control technology, computer technology, network technology and communication technology. the delay of controlled plant and wireless network transmission may have bad impacts on system performance. Aiming at solving the delay problem, this paper analyzes the existing problems of wireless network and the solutions for WINCS firstly. then, the components of simulation software true time toolbox and the function of each module are detailed. thirdly, a wireless networked control system is constructed on true time simulation platform, of which controlled plant is a DC servo and wireless transmission network is ZigBee protocol. Performances of control system are compared under conventional PID and predictive PI algorithms, which show that predictive PI controller can obtain better control effects in a large time-delay system. Finally, this paper analyzes the composition of the system delays, including the sensor to the controller delay and the controller to the actuator delay, and outlines the conclusions.

HONS (Hybrid Open Networking Stack) is a system which can service diverse types of sensor nodes as a single network. By defining open packet format of IEEE 802.15.4 standard, it can form low-power multi-hop network of diverse sensors. HONS system is composed of routers and wireless sensor nodes. Routers are motes with wired power and form the basic backbone of the multi-hop network. Wireless sensor nodes are motes powered by battery, and operate in a lower-power mode, and are attached to the multi-hop network formed by routers.
