In an event-monitoring wireless sensor network (WSN), the sensors must be waked up fast to engage in active and high-rate sensing when events of interest occur. However, to prolong the lifetime of the network, the sensors should be put into the standby mode as long as possible. there is thus a tradeoff between the standby duration and the wakeup latency. though the tradeoff is important, what is more important is a flexible transmission schedule that allows the tradeoff to be exploited. In this research, we use debris flow monitoring as a case study to illustrate how the tradeoff between long standby and fast wakeup can be exploited systematically with a flexible transmission schedule.

Recent experimental studies in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have confirmed that asymmetry in the wireless links has a significant effect on the performance of WSN network protocols. Protocols which work in simulation studies often fail when link asymmetry is encountered in real deployments. Characterization of link asymmetry is thus of paramount importance for the design and operation of re-silient WSN protocols in real scenarios. this paper details an empirical study to characterize link asymmetry in *** are several factors that contribute to link asymmetry in WSNs, the major ones being environmental effects and hardware performance. In this work, we used a systematic approach to measure the effects of hardware performance, i.e. transmitter, receiver and antenna characteristics, on link asymmetry using off-the-shelf WSN devices such as Xbow Mica2 and MicaZ motes. We conducted experiments to study the variations in spectrum utilization in these WSN devices, for both wired and wireless connections, and to ascertain the effects of any frequency and amplitude mismatches on link symmetry between nodes in transmission and reception.

this paper describes Mercury, a wearable, wireless sensor platform for motion analysis of patients being treated for neuromotor disorders, such as Parkinson's Disease, epilepsy, and stroke. In contrast to previous systems intended for short-term use in a laboratory, Mercury is designed to support long-term, longitudinal data collection on patients in hospital and home settings. Patients wear up to 8 wireless nodes equipped with sensors for monitoring movement and physiological conditions. Individual nodes compute high-level features from the raw signals, and a base station performs data collection and tunes sensor node parameters based on energy availability, radio link quality, and application specific *** is designed to overcome the core challenges of long battery lifetime and high data fidelity for long-term studies where patients wear sensors continuously 12 to 18 hours a day. this requires tuning sensor operation and data transfers based on energy consumption of each node and processing data under severe computational constraints. Mercury provides a high-level programming interface that allows a clinical researcher to rapidly build up different policies for driving data collection and tuning sensor lifetime. We present the Mercury architecture and a detailed evaluation of two applications of the system for monitoring patients with Parkinson's Disease and epilepsy.

the information transmission is transparent for the user in the ZigBee wireless sensors network, which are lack of interactivity and self-constrain. the information in the ZigBee wireless sensors network can not be viewed in a real time by a friendly interface. Modbus protocol is embedded into ZigBee stack, in this way, we can implement interaction well and the information can be viewed in a friendly interface. the paper presents the measures to embed the Modbus protocol into the ZigBee stack provided by Chipcon company, which contains address bound mechanism, information centralized storage, and flexible monitoring, by which we can monitor the real time information from the ZigBee wireless network and use some instructions to control the remote device in a friendly interface, which can be used well in the middle and small ZigBee monitoring wireless sensors network. We implement it in the plant physiological ecology monitoring system.

We present a general framework for building mobility models for floating objects. Such models are useful for studying the behavior of wireless sensors that are deployed to drift along rivers, lakes, oceans, or debris flows. these sensors may be used to track toxic wastes in the water, to study hydrology, or to warn natural hazards. While existing mobility models concentrate on modeling objects moving in autonomy on firm grounds, they cannot be used to describe floating objects that move along with the water flows passively. To build mobility models for such floating objects, our framework entails the use of GPS-equipped wireless sensors that drift along with the water and record the path information. the collected information is converted into a two-dimensional map for modeling the behavior of the floating objects, e.g. generating the simulated drifting paths of the objects. As far as we know, this is the first work on building the mobility models for floating objects.

Many threads packages have been proposed for programming wireless sensor platforms. However, many sensor network operating systems still choose to provide an event-driven model, due to efficiency concerns. We present TOS-threads, a threads package for TinyOS that combines the ease of a threaded programming model with the efficiency of an event-based kernel. TOSthreads is backwards compatible with existing TinyOS code, supports an evolvable, thread-safe kernel API, and enables flexible application development through dynamic linking and loading. In TOS-threads, TinyOS code runs at a higher priority than application threads and all kernel operations are invoked only via message passing, never directly, ensuring thread-safety while enabling maximal concurrency. the TOSthreads package is non-invasive; it does not require any large-scale changes to existing TinyOS *** demonstrate that TOSthreads context switches and system calls introduce an overhead of less than 0.92% and that dynamic linking and loading takes as little as 90 ms for a representative sensing application. We compare different programming models built using TOSthreads, including standard C with blocking system calls and a reimplementation of Tenet. Additionally, we demonstrate that TOSthreads is able to run computationally intensive tasks without adversely affecting the timing of critical OS services.

Network defense is an elusive art. the arsenal to defend our devices from attack is constantly lagging behind the latest methods used by attackers to break into them and subsequently into our networks. To counteract this trend, we developed a distributed, scalable approach that harnesses the power of collaborative end-host detectors or sensors. Simulation results reveal order of magnitude improvements over stand-alone detectors in the accuracy of detection (fewer false alarms) and in the quality of detection (the ability to capture stealthy anomalies that would otherwise go undetected). Although these results arise out of a proof of concept in the arena of botnet detection in an enterprise network, they have broader applicability to the area of network self-manageability of pervasive computing devices. To test the efficacy of these ideas further, Intel Corporation partnered with British Telecommunications plc to launch a trial deployment. In this paper, we report on results and insights gleaned from the development of a testbed infrastructure and phased experiments; (1) the design of a re-usable measurement-inference architecture into which 3rd party sensor developers can integrate a wide variety of ldquoanomaly detectionrdquo algorithms to derive the same correlation-related performance benefits; (2) the development of a series of validation methodologies necessitated by the lack of mature tools and approaches to attest to the security of distributed networked systems; (3) the critical role of learning and adaptation algorithms to calibrate a fully-distributed architecture of varied devices in varied contexts, and (4) the utility of large-scale data collections to assess what's normal behavior for Enterprise end-host background traffic as well as malware command-and-control protocols. Finally, we propose collaborative defense as a blueprint for emergent collaborative systems and its measurement-everywhere approach as the adaptive underpinnings needed for pervasive

Energy in sensor networks is distributed and non-transferable. Over time, differences in energy availability across the network are likely to arise. Protocols such as routing engines can concentrate energy load at certain nodes. Variations in incident sunlight can produce different solar charging rates at different nodes. Because many sensor network applications require nodes collaborate --- to ensure complete sensor coverage or route data to the network's edge --- a small set of nodes threatened by low energy availability can have a disproportionate impact on the entire network. For example, the loss of a single sink node may render the application unable to communicate with all the other ***, network density provides redundancy that can be exploited to control the distribution of energy load. Multiple possible routing paths may link a node and the sink, or several sinks may exist. Adjusting MAC-level parameters may allow a node to conserve energy by forcing additional load on its neighbors. Inputs from multiple sensors may prove redundant to the application, allowing some sensors to be disabled or operated at reduced fidelity, saving power at those nodes. these choices imply that energy load can be tuned to match availability, and this tuning can extend the useful lifetime of the *** distributed energy management requires network-wide awareness of energy availability and load integrated with algorithms guiding protocols toward states producing longer lifetimes or higher node duty-cycles. Intelligent Distributed Energy Awareness (IDEA) is a sensor network service that can be used by both protocols and applications. Given the current energy availability and a set of protocol states, each with different implications for network-wide energy consumption, IDEA projects future energy availability in order to make the best choice.
