Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) simulations are integral to pave way for rapid adoption of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications. Popular VANET simulators are built with high-fidelity network and mobility models to enable comprehensive evaluation. However, the computational complexity of high-fidelity models inhibits scalability. Further, the increasing infrastructure density of 5G and beyond increases the node count, thereby imposing further performance constraints. In this paper, we present a VANET simulation methodology called Disolv to enable large-scale analysis. the key decisions towards performance enhancement include simplifying mobility and network models, abstraction of packets to messages, utilization of a discrete-time instead of discrete-event paradigm for message exchanges, incorporation of data streams, and pre-computation of network links. the proposed methodology is implemented to evaluate the benefits through experiments. Results indicate that significant performance gains are observed with statistically irrelevant loss of precision. Further experiments are carried out to highlight the limitations of the Disolv approach. Finally, ITS applications suitable for evaluation with the Disolv approach are discussed.

Parallel discrete event simulation is a fundamental simulation technology that is essential to the parallelization of event-based models including hardware and transportation systems. Parallelization is often difficult due to dynamic data-dependencies and limited computational work for hiding runtime overheads. We present Devastator, a scalable parallel discrete event simulation framework for modern C++. Devastator provides a productive API that leverages C++'s type system to eliminate boilerplate code. Devastator has been designed to specifically optimize performance on distributed many-core architectures with deepening memory hierarchies. Devastator relies on the GASNet-Ex communication runtime as well as lock-free message queues to achieve highly competitive performance. We perform strong and weak scaling studies on NERSC's Perlmutter up to 32,698 cores and demonstrate an up to 5x speed-up over the ROSS simulator for workloads with substantial locality.

Memory disaggregation has emerged as an alternative to traditional server architecture in data centers to target better memory utilization and higher scalability. It involves multiple independent compute nodes and remote memory pools that get hardware support through high-speed cache-coherent interconnects such as CXL. this paper introduces DRackSim, a simulation infrastructure for scalable disaggregated memory systems. DRackSim primarily models multiple compute nodes, memory pools, local/global memory managers, and a network interconnect for coherent memory access. An application-level simulation approach simulates an out-of-order x86 multi-core processor and a multi-level cache hierarchy at compute nodes. the network interface is simulated through a queue-based approach to handle remote memory access at multiple granularity. It also models a global memory manager for remote address space at the memory pools. Finally, we integrate a modified DRAMSim2 to perform local/remote memory simulation by declaring multiple instances of DRAMSim2. We rigorously validate DRackSim subsystems against Gem5 and a hardware prototype. Finally, we explore the design space by modeling various use-case scenarios for disaggregated memory systems and evaluate their performance over various HPC and cloud benchmarks.

Smart city projects, infrastructure planning, and traffic engineering are some of the applications where traffic simulations are playing an increasingly important role. Although many traffic simulators, commercial or open-sourced, are available at our disposal today, choosing the one that best fits a user's requirements is usually not possible by taking into account only the qualitative aspects and features of the simulator. In resource-constrained simulation platforms, performing traffic simulations with less memory usage and faster execution time is always highly coveted. In this paper, we propose a quantitative benchmarking approach for evaluating the performance of traffic simulator, based on commonplace scenarios and real-life city maps.

Experience and intuition indicate that both synchronization and the mapping of workload to processors has significant impact on overall performance. However, the behavior of parallel simulations is quite complex, and the inter-relationships between workload mapping and the synchronization overheads need mathematical explanation. this paper develops a performance model of a parallel simulation that is synchronized using composite synchronization. We use this model to help explain how mapping decisions and a synchronization tuning parameter impacts synchronization overhead, and hence performance. the observations we make should inform designers of algorithms to map conservatively synchronized parallel simulations to the available computing platform.

In this paper, we present initial experiences implementing a general Parallel discrete Event simulation (PDES) accelerator on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). the accelerator can be specialized to any particular simulation model by defining the object states and the event handling logic, which are then synthesized into a custom accelerator for the given model. the accelerator consists of several event processors that can process events in parallel while maintaining the dependencies between them. Events are automatically sorted by a self-sorting event queue. the accelerator supports optimistic simulation by automatically keeping track of event history and supporting rollbacks. the architecture is limited in scalability locally by the communication and port bandwidth of the different structures. However, it is designed to allow multiple accelerators to be connected together to scale up the simulation. We evaluate the design and explore several design tradeoffs and optimizations. We show the accelerator can scale to 64 concurrent event processors relative to the performance of a single event processor.

Emerging share-everything Parallel discrete Event simulation (PDES) platforms rely on worker threads fully sharing the workload of events to be processed. these platforms require efficient event pool data structures enabling high concurrency of extraction/insertion operations. Non-blocking event pool algorithms are raising as promising solutions for this problem. However, the classical non-blocking paradigm leads concurrent conflicting operations, acting on a same portion of the event pool data structure, to abort and then retry. In this article we present a conflict-resilient non-blocking calendar queue that enables conflicting dequeue operations, concurrently attempting to extract the minimum element, to survive, thus improving the level of scalability of accesses to the hot portion of the data structure-namely the bucket to which the current locality of the events to be processed is bound. We have integrated our solution within an open source share-everything PDES platform and report the results of an experimental analysis of the proposed concurrent data structure compared to some literature solutions.

Exhaustive testing of wireless communication protocols on prototypical hardware is costly and time-consuming. An alternative approach is network simulation, which, however, often strongly abstracts from the actual hardware. Especially in the wireless domain, such abstractions often lead to inaccurate simulation results. therefore, we propose a code-transparent discrete event simulator that enables a direct simulation of existing code for wireless prototypes. With a focus on lower layers of the communication stack, we enable a parametrization of the simulation timings based on real-world measurements to increase the simulation accuracy. Our evaluation shows that we achieve close results for throughput (deviation below 3% for UDP) and latency (corrected deviation about 13 %) compared to real-world setups, while providing the benefits of code-transparent simulation, i.e., to flexibly simulate large topologies with existing prototype code. Moreover, we demonstrate that our approach finds implementation defects in existing hardware prototype software, which are otherwise difficult to track down in real deployments.

Real-Time Online Interactive Applications, e. g., multiplayer online games, connect a high number of users who interact with the application and with each other in real time, i. e., a response to a user's input should happen virtually immediately. We address the problem of reproducing the communication behavior of such applications in order to study the effect of various design decisions (application logic, underlying infrastructure, network protocols, etc.) at early stages of application development. We develop a flexible, lightweight simulator as an alternative to the state-of-the-art simulation approaches that rely on the recorded communication traffic of real applications. the advantage of our approach is that we can easily adapt to a particular application design and its underlying infrastructure and we can measure various communication metrics, without relying on existing application prototypes and real users. Our experiments demonstrate that the simulator realistically reproduces communication behavior for high numbers of users and that simulation results are very near to the communication patterns of recorded communication traffic, e. g., for the commercially successful multiplayer game Counter Strike
