this paper considers the problem of localizing a static transmitter using a robot with a single receiving antenna and a single communication chamiel in unknown complex environments. Existing solutions using Time -of-Arrival (TOA) and Angle -of-Arrival (AOA) rely on complex wireless communication systems with multiple receive antennas or multiple communication channels, which are not available for robots with off-the -shelf low-cost radios. this paper develops a localization framework using Received Signal Strength (RSS) to estimate unknown channel model parameters considering mullipath fading and spatial -correlated shadowing effects. the robot moves along a predefined trajectory to collect RSS data. AOA information is also estimated and integrated with the robot SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) results to improve the localization accuracy. Numerical simulations and experiments in an indoor environment are conducted. Results show that 90% of the estimation error is smaller than 2 m to localize a randomly placed transmitter in a 10 x 10 m(2) area.

Intelligent, large-scale IoT ecosystems have become possible due to recent advancements in sensing technologies, distributed learning, and low-power inference in embedded devices. In traditional cloud-centric approaches, raw data is transmitted to a central server for training and inference purposes. On the other hand, Federated Learning migrates both tasks closer to the edge nodes and endpoints. this allows for a significant reduction in data exchange while preserving the privacy of users. Trained models, though, may under-perform in dynamic environments due to changes in the data distribution, affecting the model's ability to infer accurately;this is referred to as concept drift. Such drift may also be adversarial in nature. therefore, it is of paramount importance to detect such behaviours promptly. In order to simultaneously reduce communication traffic and maintain the integrity of inference models, we introduce FLARE, a novel lightweight dual-scheduler FL framework that conditionally transfers training data, and deploys models between edge and sensor endpoints based on observing the model's training behaviour and inference statistics, respectively. We show that FLARE can significantly reduce the amount of data exchanged between edge and sensor nodes compared to fixed-interval scheduling methods (over 5x reduction), is easily scalable to larger systems, and can successfully detect concept drift reactively with at least a 16x reduction in latency.

Soil erosion poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity. this study investigates the impact of soil detachment on crop growth and fertility. By employing an S-type experimental setup, we analyze soil bulk density and saturation levels under controlled conditions. A sensor-based controller system enhances the experimental process, reducing human error. the findings of this research contribute to a better understanding of soil erosion mechanisms and inform strategies for soil conservation and sustainable agriculture. © 2024 ieee.

We propose a comprehensive health monitoring of astronauts which is based on Ballistocardiography (BCG). BCG uses high-precision accelerometers to measure the motion of the heart at the body surface. In contrast to conventional methods (e.g. Electrocardiography (ECG)), BCG enables the derivation of heart-related parameters that can otherwise only be recorded by imaging methods such as echocardiography. A huge issue is the signal quality of the acceleration measurement, however, by means of differential arrangement of digital acceleration sensors, the signal quality and also the susceptibility to interference can be reduced when measuring the smallest accelerations. In preparation for a BCG experiment on the international Space Station (ISS), a pre-flight measurement system was developed whose architectural design is similar to the flight hardware, but extended by a reference ECG. To simplify measurement campaigns, the simultaneously recorded BCG and ECG data can be visualized in real time, which will be shown in this demo.

Multi-agent collaboration enhances situational awareness in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Ad hoc networks of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) allow for real-time data sharing, but they face security challenges due to their decentralized nature, making them vulnerable to cyber-physical attacks. this paper introduces a trust-based framework for assured sensor fusion in distributed multi-agent networks, utilizing a hidden Markov model (HMM)-based approach to estimate the trustworthiness of agents and their provided information in a decentralized fashion. Trust-informed data fusion prioritizes fusing data from reliable sources, enhancing resilience and accuracy in contested environments. To evaluate the assured sensor fusion under attacks on system/mission sensing, we present a novel multi-agent aerial dataset built from the Unreal Engine simulator. We demonstrate through case studies improved ISR performance and an ability to detect malicious actors in adversarial settings.

An adaptive agent changes its behavior in response to the changes it observes in its operating environment. Conversely, it exhibits a particular behavior in between adaptations. It is beneficial for other agents to know when an agent is engaged in one kind of behavior rather than another to plan their activities. To these ends, an agent can offer a specification of its behavior, as well as when and how that behavior may change. Altogether, forming a promise, i.e., an indication of what the behavior might be when a follow-up request reaches the agent. However, promises can have different temporal horizons. the shorter the horizon, the more communication events are needed to keep other agents informed about the (perspective) behavior of an agent, and more re-planning needs to take place. In this work, we explore what such promises might look like by drawing inspiration from long-running research in temporal logics. Doing so permits us to leverage existing techniques for program synthesis from temporal specifications for planning.

Democratic decision making processes play a crucial role in any society, but also in organizations, especially those containing large interest groups and distributed stakeholders. Likewise, digitalization is at the forefront among companies in recent years. this study captures the development of a digital voting system with convincing performance, as a response to the requirements for such a solution that evolved from the case company on hand. We deploy the service-oriented architecture described in the Arrowhead Framework for a wearable device, equipped with a barometric pressure sensor (to capture the height) and the ESP8266 microcontroller to process data and calculate voting results. We validate the proposed approach by comparing its capabilities in terms of response time, user-friendliness and distributivity against a conventional version to demonstrate performance advantages. We find that by integrating the Arrowhead Framework, a distribution decision making solution is feasible, which serves as proof of concept for the case company we are collaborating with. In essence, it (i) reveals implications for managers that service-oriented architecture is a promising cornerstone for distributed connectivity, and (ii) provides initial guidance for developers, how such distributed democratic decision making may be set up in practice.

this research investigates the limitations of current quantum hardware in fulfilling the computational demands of quantum neural networks. It introduces an optimized circuit computed method leveraging bit splitting within the framework of distributed quantum computing. the research exemplifies this approach by decomposing a 25-qubit variational quantum circuit into several smaller 5-qubit circuits, thereby enabling distributed quantum computations. A hybrid quantum-classical neural network architecture employing this methodology was implemented and evaluated on selected computer vision datasets. the results were promising, affirming the viability of the approach. the successful implementation of this architecture suggests that future distributed quantum computing systems will likely consist of scalable, heterogeneous quantum systems interconnected through an extensive quantum network. this configuration is anticipated to significantly enhance computational power and versatility, expanding the scope of quantum computing applications in real-world scenarios. this advancement not only validates the feasibility of distributed quantum architectures but also underscores their potential to revolutionize various technological domains through enhanced computational capabilities. © 2024 ieee.

the study of merging artificial intelligence and the processing of gas and odor sensors' data is known as artificial olfaction or model nose. Gas/odor sensor data is formed by sensor response modalities that produce signature patterns that represent a particular response of a gas/odor sensor. It can be difficult to analyze the particular objective by using drift-affected gas and odor sensor data and trying to gain hidden insight from the model nose. the classification and quantification of gas and odor sensor signals is significantly challenging in model nose tasks and plays a vital role in careful sensor signal processing. the application of data-driven tactics for utilizing the outcomes of the model nose for higher performance is quite challenging. the gas/odor sensor signal processing aims to provide salient features as per the application area, in addition to achieving high accuracy. the recent sensor signal processing methods for the model nose were reviewed. the dataset, response modalities employed, trade-offs associated with each technique, and classification and quantification techniques were all covered in the article. At the end, it is demonstrated that there is a significant challenge and an open research area regarding the improvement of sensor signal processing techniques, such as raising accuracy and sensitivity values and being practical in using model noses efficiently. © 2024 ieee.

Aiming at the communication range of vehicles leaving the edge server, a distributed computing offload scheme is proposed. this scheme divides the vehicle computing intensive tasks into multiple subtasks, makes full use of the computing resources of surrounding vehicles and considers the allocation of communication resources. the problem is modeled as minimizing the maximum processing delay of all subtasks, a resource allocation scheme based on DQN (RADQN) is proposed. the simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has certain advantages compared with the scheme without considering communication resource allocation, and it is still superior to other schemes when the service vehicle speed is fast. © 2023 ieee.
