Pressure based tactile sensing is an essential part of how humans interact with their environment. Taking inspiration from a structure naturally optimized to sense force, the human fingertip, this work presents a fingerprint design carbon-black and ecoflex based capacitive pressure sensor. the finagrprint sensor shows a sensitivity improved from 2.94 × 10-4 Pa=1 to 1.48 × 10-3Pa-1 when compared to an unstructured reference device. the sensor is furthermore compared to simulations and evaluated under receptive loading cycles. © 2023 ieee.

this research work focuses on developing a design framework for flexible strain sensors considering sensor performance, end-user difficulties and industrial packaging-cum-scalable feasibility. the sensor is prepared from PVDC-co-VC and PSS-CNT polymer nanocomposite with an underneath adhesive coating and a top copper contact pad. the ratio of PVDC-co-VC/PSS-CNT is optimized towards its percolation to achieve maximum sensing performance. the developed flexible strain sensor tape shows a gauge factor of 15± 1, and it is consistent throughout the length of the sensor tape. the PSS polymer functionalization plays a critical role in achieving the homogenized dispersion of CNT nanofillers which ensures the constant gauge factor along the length of the sensor. Finally, the flexible strain sensor is demonstrated for wearable electronics applications using an IOT-enabled portable interface device. © 2023 ieee.

In the realm of coal mining, safety and risk management stand as paramount challenges, underscored by the inherent perils like structural failures and the presence of hazardous gases such as methane. Recognizing the urgent need for enhanced safety measures, this paper introduces a novel system seamlessly integrating structural integrity assessment with gas concentration analysis to ascertain the warning level in coal mines. the core objective revolves around fortifying safety protocols by implementing effective monitoring and early warning systems. this multifaceted approach encompasses addressing potential hazards, preventing accidents, reducing environmental impact, and, above all, safeguarding the well-being of mine workers. the system, intertwining structural monitoring and gas concentration measurement, dynamically generates real-time risk assessments and alerts based on the integrated data. Against the backdrop of these intricate challenges, the research strives to propel substantial advancements in mining safety practices. By harnessing the capabilities of camera imagery, machine learning, and gas sensors, it envisions a future marked by elevated safety standards and a noteworthy reduction in incidents within coal mines. © 2024 ieee.

Mobility management is crucial for urban planning, and accurate road condition information is necessary for safe and efficient transportation. In the context of this study, mobility refers to the quality of the road and the level of service provided to road users. To this end and to advance the state-of-the-art in improving mobility management strategies, we propose a new capability for our ongoing work on the Decentralized Road Traffic Monitoring (DRTM) system: road conditions assessment, aimed at enhancing mobility management for Abu Dhabi city. Our DRTM system uses smartphone cameras, Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) mode, and federated learning to extract and classify road features, such as potholes, cracks, and accidents, impacting overall mobility. the system comprises a smartphone app and a decentralized network of participants, providing real-time insights about road conditions. Our experimental results demonstrate the system's effectiveness in providing precise and up-to-date information about road conditions, with increased scalability and efficiency compared to centralized methods. By utilizing federated learning, the system ensures data security and privacy.

Measuring the performance of an athlete during sports is currently a high area of interest. Where smart watches present a convenient and practicable way to acquire ones vital parameters, other types of measurements like force measurements need additional equipment. In specific applications, like cross-country skiing, conventional force sensors cannot be used to measure these forces, because the required space would impact the athlete in the performance negatively. the circumstances urge us to have a closer look at other approaches like textile based capacitive sensors for pressure and shear force measurement which utilise conductive silver coated yarns. With them it is possible to create small footprint and flexible sensor systems which are able to detect tensile forces in multiple directions. therefore a sensor architecture is presented, which fulfills this requirement and present a textile prototype of such a pressure and shear force sensor. this prototype is further characterized and tested with different angles of force and long-term measurements to evaluate any drift in sensor data. the test results confirm the functionality of the sensor architecture, which provides the fundamentals for future applications. © 2023 ieee.

Regular plantar pressure monitoring is required for diabetic, wheelchair-bound and bed-ridden individuals. It has been shown that peak plantar pressure for diabetics increases significantly and progressively, and requires regular monitoring for early detection and intervention. sensor matrices of capacitative, resistive, and piezoelectric transducers are most commonly used for measuring areal pressure. Calibration for such medical devices is crucial for reliability and repeatable results. In this work, we elaborate on the calibration challenges of a 32× 32 velostat-based sensor matrix, and demonstrate calibration strategies suitable for a manufactured product. We show that 2N parameters can be used to calibrate an N× N sensor matrix instead of 2N2. We observe the accuracy of calibration of a 32× 32 sensor matrix by comparing the total detected weight of 35 participants at a static load with their reported weight, with 4.2% mean error and 3.1% median error. For participants in the 50-85 kg weight range, the difference was always within ±5%. Further, upon drawing contour plots and using the pressure distribution information, we were able to distinguish participants with possible foot ulcers and flat feet. © 2023 ieee.

Equivalent circuit models for fuel cell stacks as well as for the series connection of battery cells are characterized by multiple series-connected RC sub-networks. In practical applications, for example, when aiming at the aging detection and monitoring of the individual cells in a fuel cell stack, it is desired to estimate the individual state variables of each of these series-connected cells. the same holds true for battery management systems that are dedicated to the state of charge (resp., voltage) equalization in a series connection of multiple battery cells. However, the pure knowledge of the current through this series connection as well as the sum over all terminal voltages is insufficient to make the overall system model fully observable. To efficiently observe the state variables in each of the series-connected subsystems, we aim at avoiding the measurement of the voltages of each individual fuel (resp., battery) cell. Instead, this paper presents a systematic sensor switching strategy which allows for estimating the individual state variables of all series-connected subsystems in an Unscented Kalman Filter framework. Simulation results are presented to compare the achievable estimation accuracy with a scenario in which all cell (resp., terminal) voltages were measured simultaneously. © 2023 ieee.

the management and security of medical health records are of utmost importance in a higher education institution. Traditional centralized methods of managing and preserving medical records are prone to single points of failure, privacy issues, and other weaknesses. As healthcare record management becomes increasingly digitized and interconnected, institutions that embrace innovative solutions stand to gain acompetitive edge in advancing healthcare outcomes within their communities. the emergence of blockchain and decentralized technologies such as InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) presents an opportunity to address these issues by enabling a more secure and transparent system for managing medical health records. the authors propose an IPFS-based distributed off-chain solution for managing medical health records in a higher education institution (HEI) settings. the suggested solution tries to alleviate the drawbacks of the current record management systems of the institution by utilizing IPFS, a decentralized and content-addressable network. To ensure data integrity, immutability, and safe access management, the system architecture integrates IPFS with blockchain technology. the main elements and procedures for the proposed model are covered in this paper. the study work adds to the body of knowledge by introducing a novel method to HEIs for managing distributed off-chain medical records, which may be able to address the problems with centralized solutions. the advancement of safe, effective and ethical medical record management systems in the institution can be facilitated by additional research and development in this field. © 2024 ieee.

A new communication paradigm is necessary for efficient utilization of existing radio spectrums as bandwidths are limited and spectrum consumptions are inefficient. sensor nodes in Cognitive Radio sensor Networks (CRSNs) can measure and provide accurate information at various network locations. Routing information in CRSNs are challenging issues due to their complicated topologies, sporadic connections, spectrum variations and limitations in energy. Additionally, channel stability, path dependability, and route discovery frequency should be used. Because they focus more on one feature than any other, the current routing algorithms do not satisfy all throughput, energy efficiency, and resilience criteria. Increasing the network lifetime is a goal of many routing systems, which results in the selection of optimal routing pathways. the nodes that are located along this optimal path have a greater amount of their energy consumed, which results in their premature demise. Distributing traffic among numerous paths rather than along a single path that is deemed to be best is one way that multipath routing methods extend the lifetime of WSNs. In this work, Node Grade Factor (NGF) based node-disjoint multipath routing protocol (NGFMR) is proposed for energy efficiencies during selections of disjoint node paths. When selecting a path, QoS criteria like Distance to SINK, spectrum availability, communication cost, and node latency are taken into consideration. this helps to ensure that there are no path interferences between the nodes and loads are effectively distributed amongst different paths using discontinuous path routes that assist in enhancing network's QoS. the results of this study's simulations demonstrate that the proposed NGFMR performs significantly better than other standard protocols when compared for values of network throughput, packet delivery ratio (PDR), energy consumptions, and end-to-end delays. © 2023 ieee.

Identifying influence-maximizing (IM) nodes is an effective strategy for designing efficient communication networks or contain the spreading of information for rumors and epidemics with limited budgets. With the growing of the sizes of the social networks, finding solutions to the problem of intfuence - maximizing vertices becomes more and more challenging. Tra-ditionally, the number of users finally affected was the focus. However, the information diffusion speed was becoming a bottle-neck of IM problems. In this paper, we proposed a locality-aware vertex selection strategy based on local isolation centrality (LIC), while the information diffusion experiments used the Independent Cascade (IC) model. the computing scheme was implemented by a distributed graph computing framework. the superiority of the LIC algorithm was confirmed by evaluated on three real-world datasets. It was indistinguishable from algorithms such as K-shell, H-index, degree centrality (DC), local centrality (LC), and VoteRank at the diffusion cascade scale. But it showed better superiority in diffusion speed. More importantly, by comparing LIC with the VoteRank algorithm, which was the closest algorithm on diffusion speed to that of LIC, the huge advantage of the LIC algorithm in terms of time cost was found. We believe that the locality-aware LIC algorithm was more suitable for the influence-maximization problem in very large-scale social networks. © 2022 ieee.
