Ancient documents represent a primary source for research in the humanities. A substantial body of digital material has evolved containing information about these documents. Unfortunately these digital resources are often held within myriad locations, owned by a range of groups or individuals, are held within a diverse range of formats and are either unavailable or are available only in isolation. this paper describes a successful investigation into using the OGSA-DAI distributed data management software to build bridges between these islands of data and so to facilitate navigation across a larger data space than is otherwise achievable. An overview of a proof-of-concept that was developed is given along with the technical challenges encountered. Discussion from researchers in the humanities about such an architecture reveals the possibility of creating virtual data centres for the coordinated sharing of such resources. It also raises important questions as to how distributed data resources can be meaningfully federated and queried. © 2009 ieee.

Wireless sensor networks are evolving from relatively undemanding applications to applications which have stronger requirements. the coordination of distributed entities and events requires time synchronization. Although a number of methods have been studied for WSNs, some applications require high precision time synchronization. Precision time synchronization enables a variety of extensions of applications. the ieee 1588 precision time protocol (PTP) provides a standard method to synchronize devices in a network with sub-microsecond precision. this paper deals with precision time synchronization using ieee 1588 over wireless sensor networks. Precision time synchronization using ieee 1588 provides compatibility between heterogeneous systems in WSNs. this paper also presents experiments and performance evaluation of precision time synchronization in WSNs. Our result established a method for nodes in a network to maintain their clocks to within a 200 nanosecond offset from the reference clock of a master node. © 2009 ieee.

Topology control algorithms in mobile ad-hoc networks aim to reduce the power consumption while keeping the topology connected. these algorithms can preserve network resources and increase network capacity. However, few efforts have focused on the issue of topology control in presence of node mobility. One of the notable mobility aware topology control protocols is the "Mobility Aware distributed Topology Control Protocol". the main drawback of this protocol is on its mobility prediction method. this prediction method assumes linear movements and is unable to cope with sudden changes in the mobile node movements. In this paper, we propose a pattern matching based mobility prediction method in which every mobile node predicts its future location through finding similar patterns in its history of movements. Simulation results show significant improvements in terms of prediction accuracy and power consumption compared to the other known algotithms.

Sensing coverage and network connectivity are two fundamental issues in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Due to resource constraints of sensor nodes, it may not be possible, or necessary, to provide full coverage and/or connectivity in WSNs. Under a certain coverage and connectivity requirement, the node deployment strategy becomes a challenging issue in randomly deployed networks. In this paper, we propose a square regionbased coverage and connectivity probability model (SCCP), which reflects the relations among the coverage and connectivity rates, the number of sensor nodes, the sensing and communication ranges of sensor nodes, and the network size. this model can calculate the number of sensor nodes that need to be deployed for maintaining a certain coverage and/or connectivity rate. the simulation results have shown that the error-rate of node deployment is less than 5%, which is defined as the absolute difference between the number of sensor nodes obtained from the theoretical analysis and the number obtained from the simulation, divided by the number of sensor nodes obtained from the theoretical analysis. the proposed model is very useful in estimating the monitoring coverage and connectivity capacity when sensor nodes are distributed randomly and uniformly.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in wireless sensor networks(WSNs) applications. Localization in wireless sensor networks gets more and more important. Weighted centroid localization provides a fast and easy algorithm to locate devices in *** algorithm is derived from a centroid determination which calculates the position of devices by averaging the coordinates of neighbour anchors. After analyzing the radio propagation route loss model, the most appropriate Log-distance distribution model is selected to simulate the propagation of RSSI signals. Based on the centroid algorithm and the weighted centroid algorithm, an ellipse-centroid localization algorithm is proposed in this paper. the algorithm using the features of the ellipse to estimate the unknown node's coordinate. the main idea of the ellipse-centroid algorithm is the defining of the precision control factor(PCF), which can control the algorithm's localization precision. In the ellipse-centroid algorithm, the located nodes are promoted to be anchors in order to enhance the anchor density dynamicly. the simulation results demonstrate that the ellipse-centroid algorithm is more efficient in precision than the centroid algorithm and weighted centroid algorithm.

the increasing availability of ubiquitous, small, low-cost devices using wireless communications to build wireless sensor networks calls for autonomous solutions and algorithms capable of calculating the location where the information is gathered, processed, used. the requirements are particularly strict when sensor nodes are mobile;in fact, mobile applications demand more accurate locating and real time tracking, with limited impact on hardware complexity, network load and latency. Despite of remarkable research efforts put into this field by the scientific community, a common unique solution has not been adopted yet, due to the great variety of scenarios and application requirements. this paper focuses on the design and performance evaluation of Kalman filters for tracking a mobile target moving at low dynamics and for smoothing range estimations from noisy measurements. Some adaptive techniques to self-tune the filter and estimate the propagation model parameters are presented. One among the most promising adaptive algorithm presented is implemented in a real-life wireless sensor network test-bed including a mobile node. the resulting experimental results illustrate the benefits of this approach with respect to traditional multilateration based on least mean squares estimators.

Most workflow based applications currently have to adapt to available tools. While this keeps the cost of development low, it can lead to performance and flexibility tradeoffs that the application developer and deployer must make. In this paper, we use the Montage astronomical image mosaicking application as prototypical DAG-based workflow application to layout the development and deployment decisions for distributed applications. We discuss and explain the lack of simple (easy-to-use), scalable, and extensible distributed applications. We then introduce SAGA as a technology that permits the construction of abstractions that aid the development and execution of the applications, and thus addresses some of common shortcomings of traditional distributed applications development. We use Montage together with SAGA to examine how legacy applications can be made to run on distributed infrastructures, to see if our reasons are valid, and to compare potential new methods for creating distributed applications with existing technologies that are currently used. We demonstrate the ability to (i) scale-out and (ii) use different production infrastructure, while maintaining performance comparable to established systems. Our hope is that by demonstrating the simplicity of development along with other advantages (performance, scalability, extensibility, and infrastructure independence), this example will encourage others to think more broadly about how distributed applications are created and how new programming models such as Dryad can be supported in an infrastructure independent way, thus eventually leading to more applications that can seamlessly scale-out. © 2009 ieee.

the failure in cluster at a high level can bring up great damages to the system in wireless sensor networks where clustering techniques are used. Certain methods have been reported in the literature in recovering the sensors from a failure cluster. One of the most important methods is to recover the sensors in run-time and without clustering. But it is so much ideal to suppose that all the sensors will be recovered. In this paper, we proposed a method that can operate on the remained sensors that are not recovered. © 2009 ieee.

Data aggregation in wireless sensor networks eliminates data redundancy, thereby improving bandwidth usage and energy utilization. this paper presents a data aggregation algorithm, called MRDWA (Multi-Role Dynamic Weighting Aggregation), it mainly used in event driven WSN (Wireless sensor Networks). MRDWA is based on cluster topology structure, and use different data aggregation algorithm according to the different characteristics of cluster member and cluster header. Each cluster member node adopts local estimation mechanism to determine whether to send sample data, and cluster header node adopts the dynamic weighting manner to make data aggregation according to its' members' data staleness. the experimental result shows that the aggregation algorithm reduces energy consumption on the condition of insurance of accuracy of sample data. © 2009 ieee.

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) can be used to provide mobile users temporary infrastructure to use services such as database retrieval service when traditional infrastructure-based networks are unavailable in infrastructure-less situations (e.g. after a destructive disaster like an earthquake). the challenging task in such dynamic environments is how we can improve the service availability. An effective strategy is replicating a service at some nodes distributed across the network. However, service replication can considerably impact the system energy consumption. Since mobile devices have a limited amount of battery, a dynamic and efficient service replication is necessary to support such environments. In this paper, we propose a distributed service replication scheme for achieving high service availability with reasonable energy consumption for MANETs. the proposed method called distributed Adaptive Service Replication (DAR) divides the whole network into disjoint zones of at most 2-hops in diameter and builds a dynamic replication mechanism which puts replicas only in zones with high service demand. through simulations, we have confirmed that our approach can achieve higher service availability and lower energy consumption than an existing method.
