the user applications implemented within a pervasive environment need to observe and adapt themselves to the environment in order to gain an efficient usage of the available information. this paper presents a new architectural approach in building a distributed context-aware acquisition middleware which supports application adaptation to the environment changes. the architecture is based on the possibility to integrate different context providers in a way that is transparent for the end-user. the complexity of the context providers is hidden to the client application. the middleware provides both a transparent mechanism which is used to monitor the environment changes and a simple query language to interrogate the system for given target context values. Comparing our proposed middleware against the requirements of a pervasive context-aware application, it proves to be a feasible solution for building context-aware pervasive applications.

Clustering and aggregation inherently increase wireless sensor network (WSN) lifetime by collecting information within a cluster at a cluster head, reducing the amount of data through computation, then forwarding it. Traditional approaches, however, both spend extensive communication energy to identify the cluster heads and are inflexible to network dynamics such as those arising from sink mobility, node failure, or dwindling battery reserves. this paper presents CLIQUE, an approach for data clustering that saves cluster head selection energy by using machine learning to enable nodes to independently decide whether or not to act as a cluster head on a per-packet basis. We refer to this lack of actual cluster head assignment as being role-free, and demonstrate through simulations that, when combined with learning dynamic network properties such as battery reserves, up to 25% less energy is consumed in comparison to a traditional, random cluster head selection approach.

TDMA has been proposed as a MAC protocol for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) due to its efficiency in high WSNload. However, TDMA is plagued with shortcomings;we present modifications to TDMA that will allow for the same efficiency of TDMA, while allowing the network to conserve energy during times of low load (when there is no activity being detected). Recognizing that aggregation plays an essential role in WSNs, TDMA-ASAP adds to TDMA: (a) transmission parallelism based on a level-by-level localized graph-coloring, (b) appropriate sleeping between transmissions ("napping"), (c) judicious and controlled TDMA slot stealing to avoid empty slots to be unused and (d) intelligent scheduling/ordering transmissions. Our results show that TDMA-ASAP's unique combination of TDMA, slot-stealing, napping, and message aggregation significantly outperforms other hybrid WSN MAC algorithms and has a performance that is close to optimal in terms of energy consumption and overall delay.

In recent years, wireless sensor networks (WSN) are widely applied to three-dimensional monitoring, distributed monitoring, target tracking, space exploration, a random distribution of measurement and other fields. Wireless sensor networks, such as enemy reconnaissance, strength monitoring and other special purpose on the military forces research on transmission of information security has been widely concerned. In this paper, a new technology, i.e. time reversal (TR) techniques, is utilized to reduce probability that the signal have been illegally detected in space and time. Time reversal technique allows the signal can be detected only at a specific time and specific space, while in the other time and space the signal will be very difficult to be detected; thereby TR technology will enhance the information security of wireless sensor network.

Latest research results in the areas of computer vision and embedded systems have made way for smart cameras. these cameras use a built-in computing unit to analyse images directly at the CCD sensor. Smart cameras can cooperate in order to analyse scenes from different perspectives and track objects autonomously. In large smart camera systems (also known as distributed vision networks), distributed algorithms are needed that allow for cooperation and self-organization among *** paper focuses on alarm management in distributed vision networks, in which security staff is equipped with mobile terminals. these terminals and cameras are connected via an ad hoc network. We present a robust and lightweight algorithm that allows to notify guards quickly in case serious incidents have happened. this algorithm has been evaluated by simulation experiments and in a modestly sized real world testbed. Results show that the algorithm takes reasonable time to terminate (10s) in a network of 100 cameras.

In this paper, we propose a dynamic approach for transmission holdoff time in ieee 802.16 mesh mode with Coordinated distributed Scheduling scheme (C-DSCH). this scheme allows different nodes to use different holdoff time values according to current node need of the control-plane bandwidth. Nodes that need to establish data scheduling use small XmtholdoffExp, while others use large XmtholdoffExp. Simulation results show that the proposed dynamic approach can reduce unnecessary transmission delays and improve network throughput.

Wireless sensor network(WSN) integrated with existing radio frequency identification application(RFED) can not only capture information of items in the container, but also sense the condition around the items by wireless communication. Based on technology infrastructure of items management with RFID, assimilating the thinking of ieee 1451 transducer electronic data sheet(TEDS), the paper designs hardware and software of sensing tag and reader, and brings forward infrastructure and information processes of WSN based on communication of active RFID, and analyses the application case of container shipping with WSN system designed.

In most of the wireless sensor and actor network (WSAN) applications, the locations for the actors are determined autonomously by the collaboration of actors and/or sensors in order to eliminate human intervention as much as possible. Particularly, sensors can collaborate in a distributed manner and elect cluster-heads (CHs) among them based on certain criteria. the actors can then move to such CH locations by talking to nearby sensors/actors. Such movement, however, should be done wisely in order to minimize the movement distance of actors so that their lifetimes can be improved. Nevertheless, this may not be possible since not all the actor and CH locations will be known by each actor. In addition, the actors may not be reachable to each other and thus conflicts in assignments can easily occur. In this paper, we propose an actor-CH location matching algorithm which will assign the actors to appropriate CH locations in a distributed manner with minimized travel distance. We adapt the Gale-Shapley (G-S) stable matching algorithm from matching theory in order to prevent conflicts in matching and minimize the travel distance of actors. In this matching algorithm, actors are regarded as men and CHs are regarded as women. For distributed execution of the algorithm, subnetworks of actors and CHs are determined. Each subnetwork performs its own matching based on G-S *** there are unmatched actors after this process, a network wide search is used to detect such nodes and to perform the matching. We evaluated the performance of our approach through simulation and have shown that our approach can produce results very close to the brute force approach with minimal messaging overhead.

the emerging cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are envisioned to integrate computation, communication and control with the physical world. therefore, CPS requires close-interactions between the cyber and physical worlds both in time and space. these interactions are usually governed by events, which occur in the physical world and should autonomously be reflected in the cyber-world, and actions, which are taken by the CPS as a result of detection of events and certain decision mechanisms. Both event detection and action decision operations should be performed accurately and timely to guarantee temporal and spatial correctness. this calls for a flexible architecture and task representation framework to analyze CP operations. In this paper, we explore the temporal and spatial properties of events, define a novel CPS architecture, and develop a layered spatio-temporal event model for CPS. the event is represented as a function of attribute-based, temporal, and spatial event conditions. Moreover, logical operators are used to combine different types of event conditions to capture composite events. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first event model that captures the heterogeneous characteristics of CPS for formal temporal and spatial analysis.

Grid workflow authoring tools are typically specific to particular workflow engines built into grid middleware, or are application specific and are designed to interact with specific software implementations. g-Eclipse is a middleware independent grid workbench that aims to provide a unified abstraction of the grid and includes a grid workflow builder to allow users to author and deploy workflows to the grid. this paper describes the g-Eclipse Workflow Builder and its implementations for two grid middlewares, gLite and GRIA, and a case study utilizing the workflow builder in a grid user's scientific workflow deployment.
