We apply the three-layer survivability analysis architecture developed by Ma & Krings (Ma & Krings 2009, Ma 2008) in the context of distributed networks (such as wireless sensor networks) to the study of strategic information warfare. To simplify the research problem, we assume that the information warfare (IW) is conducted in an isolated paradigm, which we call an electronic cosmos (ecosmos), i.e., independent of other national and/or war strategies, which is not realistic but allows us to develop a manageable mathematical architecture for modeling and simulation. In this architecture issues outside the cosmos, such as other national or war strategies, are abstracted and represented with the vectors of environmental covariates. this architecture integrates four closely related fields: reliability analysis, survivability analysis, dynamic hybrid fault models, and agent-based computing under a unified architecture. Analogically, it draws on biological inspiration from the studies on metapopulation dynamics, animal communication networks and conflict resolution, social learning and social foraging in behavioral and cognitive ecology. Mathematically, the architecture consists of three layers and is formulated around the core concept of dynamic hybrid fault models-the notion of "Byzantine generals playing the evolutionary game." the three-layer architecture includes a set of definitions, models and approaches: the tactical level deals with unpredictable, latent, unobserved or unobservable risks (UUUR) by utilizing survival analysis and its sister technologies. the strategic level integrates dynamic hybrid fault models (Ma & Krings 2008, Ma 2008) and tactical level models. From the strategic level, the evolutionary stable strategy (ESS) prescribes the sustainable or survivable strategies. ieee 802.15.4a is an amendment to 802.15.4 for an alternative PHY. the principal interest of ieee 802.15.4a is in providing communications and high precision ranging / location capability. In this paper, we present the performance metrics for ranging schemes. the analysis based on the performance metrics characterizes the features of ranging schemes as follows. For the TWR scheme, due to its turn around time, the frequency offset results in significant ranging error. Since SDS-TWR takes more than two times bandwidth of that by TWR, which results in not only lower capacity, but also higher sensitivity to mobility than that of TWR. We cancel the ranging error from the frequency offset in a different way. We introduce a frequency ratio based TWR (R-TWR) scheme, which cancels the ranging error based on the ratio of the frequency on the originator side to the frequency on the responder side. We prove that the ranging accuracy of R-TWR scheme can reach the same order as that of SDS-TWR, while the capacity and sensitivity to mobility keep same as TWR scheme.

We describe the design of a large-scale wireless sensor network for agriculture monitoring. We have deployed a prototype of 64 sensors to monitor a commercial vineyard. the system provides different software modules ranging from filtering raw data to a centralized and a distributed data storage applications. the used protocols ensure reliable and robust communication and load-balancing energy consumption. A backend server provides a user-friendly graphical interface offering two main functionalities: logging communication messages of the employed protocols for diagnostic purposes and providing end-user support for both on-demand and periodic data requests. We highlight the efficiency of such a network in comparison to the traditionally used solution based on individual weather station by deploying both systems in parallel and comparing their reading results. the results clearly demonstrate that wireless sensor networks provide better geographic coverage and an increased spatial resolution compared to traditional solutions. they also enable precise measurements of soil conditions near the plants themselves, increasing the quality of the information available to the farmer.

By combining the wavelet domain filtering and multi-sensor linear information fusion rule,we propose a new distributed and parallel algorithm for multi-sensor information fusion using the theory of wavelet domain multi-scale *** proposed algorithm decomposes the single sensor's information into different scale,and then estimates the target state in different scale;then the local state estimates are transmitted to the fusion-center to get the optimal information fusion *** posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound (PCRLB of the proposed algorithm is also *** example of radar tracking system with three sensors is provided to illuminate the effectiveness of the method.

In order to assure remote monitoring of patients with chronic diseases and also to improve the responsiveness and quality of medical services a distributed e-health system was designed. A key element of this system is the smart self-care unit (SSCU) that allows remote acquisition of medical data from patients treated or monitored at home. this unit is composed of a set of smart medical sensors and devices connected through a wireless network. the system assures mobility for the patients under observation and seamless transfer of medical data to the healthcare centers (hospitals, clinics, general practitioners, etc). the patients can interact remotely with medical personnel and may have access to medical services through a distributed, multiserver-based application. A number of autonomous medical applications (servers) deployed in every medical center cooperate in order to offer an integrated healthcare system. Medical information concerning patients enrolled in this system is exchanged between medical entities and self-care units. As part of this system a portal application offers a set of useful medical services such as: information about doctors, medical units and their services, secure storage of personal medical records, discussion forum for patients and doctors or statistical processing of recorded medical data.

Multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technique is considered as one of the most promising wireless technologies that can significantly improve transmission capacity and reliability. Many emerging mobile wireless applications require peer-to-peer transmissions over an ad hoc network, where the nodes often have different number of antennas, and the channel condition and network topology vary over time. It is important and challenging to develop efficient schemes to distributively coordinate transmission resource sharing among a heterogeneous group of nodes over an infrastructure-free mobile ad hoc network. In this work, we propose a holistic distributed scheduling algorithm that can adaptively select different transmission strategies based on the node types and channel conditions to effectively relieve the bottleneck effect caused by nodes with smaller antenna arrays, and avoid transmission failure due to violation of channel constraint. the algorithm also takes advantage of channel information to opportunistically schedule cooperative spatial multiplexed transmissions between nodes and provide special transmission support for higher priority nodes with weak channels, so that the data rate of the network can be maximized while user transmission quality requirement is supported. the performance of our algorithm is studied through extensive simulations and the results demonstrate that our algorithm is very effective in handling node heterogeneity and channel constraint, and can significantly increase the throughput while reducing the transmission delay.

Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is an emerging communication paradigm to enable resilient, cost-efficient and reliable services for the future-generation wireless networks. In this paper, we study the problem of multipoint-to-multipoint (M2M) multicasting in a WMN which aims to use the minimum number of time slots to exchange messages among a group of k mesh nodes in a multi-hop WMN with n mesh nodes. We study the M2M multicasting problem in a distributed environment where each participant only knows that there are k participants and it does not know who are other k -1 participants among n mesh nodes. It is known that the computation of an optimal M2M multicasting schedule is NP-hard. We present a fully distributed deterministic algorithm for such an M2M multicasting problem and analyze its time complexity. We show that if the maximum hop distance between any two out of the k participants is d, then the studied M2M multicasting problem can be solved in time O(d log 2 n+k log 3 n/log k) with a polynomial-time computation, which is an almost optimal scheme due to the lower bound Omega(d+ k log n/log k) given in [5]. Our algorithm also improves the currently best known result with running time O(d log 2 n + k log 4 n) in [13]. In this paper, we also propose a distributed deterministic algorithm which accomplishes the M2M multicasting in time O(d+k) with a polynomial-time computation in unit disk graphs. this is an asymptotically optimal algorithm in the sense that there exists a WMN topology, e.g., a line, a ring, a star or a complete graph, in which the M2M multicasting cannot be completed in less than Omega(d+k) units of time.

there are many approaches to pedestrian detection in collision avoidance systems depending on the sensors (visible light, thermal infrared, radar, laser scanner) used for acquiring the data and the features (depth, shape, motion) used for detection. In this paper we present a method for shape based pedestrian detection in traffic scenes using a stereo vision system for acquiring the image frames and a contour matching technique for classifying the scene objects as belonging or not to the pedestrian class. the 3D information is used for determining the foreground points of each 2D object and a contour extraction and merging algorithm is performed on these points. A 2D image filtering is performed and edges are extracted and used for objects contours refinement. A hierarchy of pedestrian full body contours and a matching technique are used for classifying the extracted objects contours from the scene.

Driving assistance systems provide either safety or comfort functions. Such systems must evaluate the state of the world and take necessary actions. A preliminary step for evaluating the state of the world is to detect, track and classify scene objects. the classification step becomes especially important in complex urban traffic scenarios. In such scenarios the sensors of choice are vision based, as they provide detailed scene information. In this paper we present the architecture of a detection, tracking and classification framework based on stereovision. We detect objects using either a points grouping algorithm (for large objects) or a density map grouping algorithm (for small objects). We perform first a rough classification based on objects' dimensions and track objects according to the motion model of each class. We extract motion features and perform a refined classification. Class specific dichotomizers are subsequently used to filter the classified objects, rejecting incorrect classification. A large database of manually labeled objects is used for determining motion models, training the classifiers and measuring the performance of the system.

To efficiently manage the sensor networks the topology of the entire network has to be discovered by the monitoring node. In this paper a topology discovery algorithm for sensor networks has been described. the algorithm finds a set of distinguished nodes, using whose neighborhood information the approximate topology of the network is constructed. Only these distinguished nodes reply back to the topology discovery probes. these nodes logically organize the network in the form of clusters comprising nodes in their neighborhood. Topology discovery algorithms form a tree of clusters rooted at the monitoring node, which initiates the topology discovery process. this organization is used for efficient data dissemination and aggregation, duty cycle assignment and fault tolerance of the network system. the unpredictable behaviors of sensor networks have made it a vital point that how the operational nodes will be managed when a node in the network fails. In this paper fault tolerance mechanisms for sensor networks have been described for clustered response approach on considering different scenarios that may come to consideration when a node fails; thus ensuring maximum connectivity among operational nodes after the failure of the node. the mechanism explains how the information packets transmitted to the faulty node can be cached by an operational node. After being repaired the faulty node is reinstalled to operational state and the mechanisms of getting the repaired node connected to the network have been described in this paper. Reverse traverse mechanism has been described in this paper as a part of fault tolerance mechanisms, which ensures that the number of clusters is not increased when a faulty node is repaired and re-connected to the network. the mechanisms described in this paper are distributed and highly scalable
