this paper proposes a distributed quality of service (QoS) guaranteed scheme to guarantee QoS for multimedia services of connection users in ieee 802.16 broadband wireless access (BWA) systems. An environment of combination of the fixed wireless connections and mobile wireless connections is considered in this paper. In order to provide better QoS guarantees for connection users in the ieee 802.16 BWA systems, efficient QoS guaranteed schemes and corresponding algorithms must be developed in the base station (BS) and subscriber station (SS). According to the connection requests of service types, the QoS influence factors of connection-level and packet-level are analyzed in this paper. We utilize the concept of distributed load balance to share the overheads of BS and SS reasonably. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is efficient for reducing the connection-blocking probability (CBP), connection-dropping probability (CDP), and packet delay rate. © Copyright 2008 ICST.

A novel sensor network configuration is introduced for traffic surveillance in Intelligent Transportation systems. distributed sensor nodes based on passive acoustic transducers are non intrusively/obtrusively deployed at motorway road-side to provide real-time traffic data collection for dynamic queue/jam detection. the system is capable to provide a complete real-time picture of traffic flow at unprecedented time/space scale. the infrastructure is based on a stand-alone, install-and-forget architecture, featuring an energy efficient protocol for sensor networking and providing connectivity to back-end computing environment via TCP/IP over UMTS. Extensive experimental demonstration is given for long term operation on a motorway test site.

In this paper, we analyze the performance of group based detection in sparse sensor networks, when the system level detection decision is made based on the detection reports generated from multiple sensing periods. Sparse deployment is essential for reducing cost of large scale sensor networks, which cover thousands of square miles. In a sparse deployment, the sensor field is only partially covered by sensors' sensing ranges, resulting in void sensing areas in the region, but all nodes are connected through multi-hop networking. Further, due to the unavoidable false alarms generated by a single sensor in a network, many deployed systems use group based detection to reduce system level false alarms. Despite the popularity of group based detection, few analysis works in the literature deal with group based detection. In this paper, we propose a novel approach called Markov chain based Spatial approach (M-S-approach) to model group based detection in sensor networks. the M-S-approach successfully overcomes the complicated conditional detection probability of a target in each sensing period, and reduces the execution time of the analysis from many days to 1 minute. the analytical model is validated through extensive simulations. this analytical work is important because it provides an easy way to understand the performance of a system that uses group based detection without running countless simulations or deploying real systems. © 2008 ieee.

Localization is crucial for wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. As the distance-measurement ranges are often less than that of the communication range for many ranging systems, most communication-dense wireless networks are often localization-sparse. Consequently, most existing algorithms fail to provide accurate localization supports. In order to address this issue, by introducing a concept of component, we propose to group nodes into components, so that nodes are able to better share their ranging and anchor knowledge. this design, CALL, relaxes two essential restrictions in localization: node ordering and anchor distribution. We evaluate the effectiveness of CALL through extensive simulations. the results show that CALL locates 80% nodes in a network with average degree 7.5 and 5% percent anchors, which outperforms the state of the art design Sweeps about 20%.

In sensor networks different types of sensors are used to capture events, recognize contexts, derive states of objects or monitor processes within application scenarios. We envision the use of the presented technology in areas that are very complex, e.g. in industrial applications. the presented system uses sensor information from wireless sensor nodes that are forwarded and aggregated in an information processing system. the high density of both number of sensors and overall sensor readings leads to an information overload situation, where it is difficult for a human to perceive detailed Information using text based information input. We propose the use of a virtual environment - sensorRAUM - for improved sensory perception.

Presence of the distributed generation (DG) in electric systems can represent a significant impact on the operational characteristics of distribution networks. this paper presents a study aimed at the appropriate choice of parameters used in a multi-objective analysis considering the optimal DG placement. thus, this paper develops a multi-objective approach to define qualitative and quantitative parameters using the fuzzy logic and the Bellman-Zadeh algorithm to determine optimal DG location in distribution systems. therefore, this study allows the energy supplying companies may guarantee an appropriate selection of their own parameters according to an optimal DG location. this also allows a structural rethinking of the electric utility, diversifying and deploying electrical energy sources at many generation sites, thus providing increased planning flexibilities. these locations are determined both for the distribution system feeders, as well as for nodes inside of a given feeder. Considerations and results described in this paper are part of the Research & Development Program developed by the State Company of Electric Energy (CEEE) and the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), Brazil.

this paper presents a protocol called SAKE (Software Attestation for Key Establishment), for establishing a shared key between any two neighboring nodes of a sensor network. SAKE guarantees the secrecy and authenticity of the key that is established, without requiring any prior authentic or secret information in either node. In other words, the attacker can read and modify the entire memory contents of both nodes before SAKE executes. Further, to the best of our knowledge, SAKE is the only protocol that can perform key re-establishment after sensor nodes are compromised, because the presence of the attacker's code in the memory of either protocol participant does not compromise the security of SAKE. Also, the attacker can perform any active or passive attack using an arbitrary number of malicious, colluding nodes. SAKE does not require any hardware modification to the sensor nodes, human mediation, or secure side channels. However, we do assume the setting of a computationally-limited attacker that does not introduce its own computationally powerful nodes into the sensor network. SAKE is based on ICE (Indisputable Code Execution), a primitive we introduce in previous work to dynamically establish a trusted execution environment on a remote, untrusted sensor node.

Today a growing number of applications that operate in dynamic environments use distributed systems. Often, one or more constrained resources need to be allocated across such systems. In addition, for a number of important applications, the resources to be allocated are discrete quantities and the demand profile is intrinsically location and time dependent (thus pre-computating the resource allocation problem off-line is inadequate). We model such systems using graphs - vertices representing the sites and edges capturing locality - where each vertex is associated with the a pair of (integer) numbers representing the current and the required level of a resource. We seek on-the-fly reallocation of resources that satisfy the demand at each node, if it is feasible to do so, while minimizing a given metric of interest, such as the total distance traveled, maximum disruption time, etc. Due to integrality constraints, one expects such a problem to be NP-hard. However, we show that the matrix representing constraints of the problem satisfies the Total Unimodularity property and hence the problem is solvable in polynomial time. We propose a distributed algorithm that employs only local communications. We characterize the proposed algorithm and by numerical performance evaluation, show that it significantly outperforms known heuristic algorithms. © ieee.

Communicating extensive in-network data generated by resource-constrained wireless sensor nodes is an energy consuming process. To minimise the amount of data exchanged in sensor networks, several researchers have proposed novel and efficient protocols to perform data aggregations, clustering or regression on sensor nodes. Most of these approaches focus on optimising conventional mining techniques to work on resource-constrained sensor nodes. However, the application of association rules for sensor networks is an area of study that has not been investigated. this is due to the high computational cost of obtaining meaningful rules. thus, in this paper, we propose Adaptive Rule Triggers on sensors ARTS, to extract highly correlated rules from sensor data and apply them. the learnt rules are used to extend sensor lifetime by controlling sensor operations using triggers. Our approach is optimised to run on non-critical sensing applications/data-aggregation applications that can tolerate a coarse-granularity for sensed data. For this category of applications, our approach can derive meaningful rules efficiently to further conserve energy of wireless sensors. In this paper, these energy savings are evidenced in our experiments that adapt ARTS to a state-of-the-art clustering protocol.

this paper studies the problem of associating deterministically a track revealed by a binary sensor network with the trajectory of a unique moving anonymous object, namely the Multiple Object Tracking and Identification (MOTI) problem. In our model, the network is represented by a sparse connected graph where each vertex represents a binary sensor and there is an edge between two sensors if an object can pass from a sensed region to another without activating any other remaining sensor. the difficulty of MOTI lies in the fact that trajectories of two or more objects can be so close (track merging) that the corresponding tracks on the sensor network can no longer be distinguished, thus confusing the deterministic association between an object trajectory and a track. the paper presents several results. We first show that MOTI cannot be solved on a general graph of ideal binary sensors even by an omniscient external observer if all the objects can freely move on the graph. then, we describe some restrictions that can be imposed a priori either on the graph, on the object movements or both, to make MOTI problem always solvable. We also discuss the consequences of our results and present some related open problems.
