Peer-to-peer is a popular distributed system. Withthe advancement in mobile technologies, mobile p2p has revealed its attraction. But, the resource constraints such as bandwidth, computing power, energy, etc. and node's mobility give hard challenges to the researchers. Smart content distribution and efficient content discovery are the heart of p2p protocols. Routing is associated with every task but it is expensive in ad hoc environment. In this paper, we address these issues and present a peer-to-peer system for wireless ad-hoc networks using multi-level hashing to reduce routing overhead. the necessity of multilevel hashing is justified through extensive simulation.

Successful integration of pervasive sensor networks in mission critical applications depends on the ability of these networks to cope with and reasonably perform under the worst-case scenarios. One of the key performance measures is the network's ability to route information from the source node to the intended destination. this paper introduces a general framework with which worst-case routing performance of sensor networks can be evaluated and compared. Ultimately, our method can either be used as a design optimization tool, or a decision making tool to select and price contending sensor network designs.

In this paper we propose a new peer-to-peer network based on Knodel graphs W-d,W-n of even order n and degree d, where 1 <= d <= [log(2)n]. We then present routing algorithms in the P2P network based on the Knodel graph. the algorithm takes advantage of the routing heuristics in the Knodel graph and reduces the routing length of the P2P network by half. this P2P network can be configured flexibly to be based on the partial Knodel graph, where each peer is connected to the selected dimensions, thus decrease the size of the routing table with trading off the routing length. the applications may choose the configuration according to the computing ability of the peers and other requirements.

Recent studies report a growing demand for down-timeless evolution of distributed automation systems. this paper therefore first analyzes evolution approaches from the industry as well as from academic research pointing out benefits and drawbacks. the standard IEC 61499 is identified as promising basis for dynamic reconfiguration of control applications, but it lacks for an adequate engineering methodology. Finally the epsilon CEDAC approach for structured evolution modeling is presented. therein a distributed evolution control application modeled in terms of IEC 61499 is used for transforming the control application from current to desired state without downtime. Further important issues are correctness of the evolution process and runtime error handling mechanisms.

Industrial Process Measurement and Control systems (IPMCS) are used in most of the industrial sectors to achieve production improvement, process optimization and time and cost reduction. Integration, reuse, flexibility and optimization are demanded to adapt to a rapidly changing and competitive market. thus, a consolidation of modeling methodologies for achieving this goal is needed. In this paper, a multidisciplinary modelling of distributed IPMCS, as well as a modelling methodology are proposed. the model of the application consists of three related views that separate the functional aspects from the implementation issues (hardware and software). the complete model is constituted by the three different views as well as the relationship among them. the modelling methodology makes use of the Unified Modelling Language (UML) and it guides a non-expert UML user through the steps needed to model the control application. To achieve this, a set of UML profiles, that characterize the different elements of each domain view, have been defined. A limited subset of UML diagrams are used to define the three domains as well as its relationships. To illustrate its use, the methodology is applied to an industrial application: the distributed control system of a heat treatment line.

Cooperative transmission can obtain spatial diversity without using multiple antennas, thus achieving more reliable transmission or consuming less power. To realize cooperative communication in a distributed wireless network, two key questions need to be answered, namely when to cooperate and whom to cooperate with. In this paper, we propose a distributed MAC protocol with automatic relay selection to address these questions. We show by theoretical analysis and simulation results that the proposed solution outperforms conventional noncooperation transmission by 8 to 10 dB, for various target outage probabilities.

the EEC-61499 standard defines a framework in which distributed control applications may be developed, and how these are interpreted and executed. Withthe distributed nature of the control applications, many new issues also need to be taken into account. Most of these arise due to the new error model and failure modes of the distributed hardware on which the distributed application is being executed. On the other hand, the distributed nature of the hardware also allows new capabilities to be explored, such as improved reliability through masking of faults. Fault tolerance is usually achieved by the use of replication. Replication at the software level allows for much smaller granularity, but all replicas must be kept synchronised in order to produce the same output data and events. To achieve replica determinism all replicas must process the same set of inputs in the same order, and the outputs of the replicas must somehow be consolidated. the EEC 61499 framework however does not explicitly handle the replication of software components. In this paper we propose a replication model for IIEC-61499 applications, and discuss which mechanisms and protocols may be used for their support. In short, replica determinism is achieved through the use of distributed synchronised clocks, atomic multicast protocols, as well as timed messages.

In our I-SENSE project we demonstrate the combination the scientific research areas multi-sensor data fusion and pervasive embedded computing. the main idea is to provide a generic architecture which supports a distributed data fusion on an embedded system. Due to the high onboard processing and communication power of the used hardware, our proposed architecture is designed to perform sophisticated data fusion tasks. Another goal of I-SENSE research project addresses the reconfiguration of a distributed system at runtime, thus, to be able to react to changes in the system's environment dynamically. this paper though gives an overlook of our developed middleware which eases the development of distributed fusion applications on embedded systems and which includes reconfiguration facilities. We further present some experimental results obtained using our middleware and give an outlook of our ongoing research.
