Withthe advance of sensing technologies and its applications, sophisticated (i.e., mobile, wireless) sensor networks are gaining increasing interest. Although such networks allow to implement interesting tracking functionalities, their performance is severely affected by energy limitations. this paper introduces an activity scheduling protocol that extends the network lifetime while the area coverage is kept unchanged A cost-benefit analysis is conducted in order to assess the cost of the additional number of sensors that should be deployed to implement our protocol. Simulation results show that the proposed approach outperforms the existing scheduling techniques.
sensor nodes are often organized into clusters to facilitate many network operations such as data aggregation. Clustering has to be protected in hostile environments. Otherwise, an attacker can easily mislead a cluste...

In this paper a novel prediction method is presented for distributed motion control systems. It is assumed that the trajectory generator part of the control system is connected to the low level controller through Wide Area Network (WAN). In this case the variable network delay, communication packet losses, irregular package arrival can severely influence the control characteristics (transient behaviour, tracking performance) because there will be control periods when no new information on the time varying reference trajectory will be available for the low level controller. the proposed prediction method is based on dynamic filters and it can effectively compensate the effect of the networked communication on control characteristics.

A substantial amount of research on routing in sensor networks has focused upon methods for constructing the best route, or routes, from data source to sink before sending the data We propose an algorithm that works withthis chosen route to increase the probability of data reaching the sink node in the presence of communication failures. this is done using an algorithm that watches radio activity to detect when faults occur and then takes actions at the point of failure to re-route the data through a different node without starting over on an alternative path from the source. We show that we are able to increase the percentage of data received at the source node without increasing the energy consumption of the network beyond a reasonable level.

A novel approach to event boundary detection is proposed, where autonomous agents are deployed in order to minimize the number of transmissions required to discover an event boundary. the goal of the algorithm is to localize node transmission along the event boundary, since the sensory data from nodes not along the boundary is not required for event boundary detection. Simulations demonstrate that the algorithm has a linear efficiency function when related to event radius of sufficient size and further demonstrates that the boundary of an event may be successfully mapped using agents.

Interest in extracting and exploiting information from wireless sensor networks has been increasing for several years. Most scenarios focus on collecting and evaluating large amounts of data at a single sink, and many protocols and algorithms have been designed to accomplish this efficiently. However, not all applications require all data, nor do they have a single collection point. Instead, multiple moving base stations collect and exploit information, concentrating on data gathered in their immediate vicinity and requiring less precise knowledge about the data collected far away. While such a scenario can be supported by traditional approaches that present perfect information, they actually require less data, therefore providing a clear opportunity for increasing network lifetime without sacrificing the data quality requirements of the application. this idea of non uniform quality of service is the focus of this paper, along with two preliminary protocols demonstrating its potential and motivating future work.

the imminent mass deployment of pervasive computing technologies such as sensor networks and RFID tags, together withthe increasing participation of the Web community in feeding geo-located information within tools such as Google Earth, 'will soon make available an incredible amount of information about the physical and social worlds and their processes. this opens up the possibility of exploiting all such information for the provisioning of pervasive context-aware services for "browsing the world", i.e., for facilitating users in gathering information about the world, interacting with it, and understanding it. However, for this to occur, proper models and infrastructures must be developed In this paper we propose a simple model for the representation of contextual information, the design and implementation of a general infrastructure for browsing the world, as well as some exemplar services we have implemented over it.
