Autonomous driving vehicles and advanced driver-assistance systems are gaining tremendous attention with the hope of providing a new transportation mode that is more convenient and ensures road safety. Different types of sensors are deployed together with the aid of deep learning (DL) techniques to help the vehicle perceive the surrounding environment and navigate toward the destination. In this paper, we implemented a deep learning-based motion planner using sensor fusion from LiDAR point clouds and camera RGB images to predict future waypoints. the model is trained in an end-to-end manner in which input are the multimodal sensor data, and output is the predicted future waypoints. A transformer module with a self-attention mechanism is used to integrate the representation of the two sensor modalities. During training, auxiliary tasks including depth estimation and bird-eye-view semantic segmentation are carried out to provide an intermediate representation of the perception process as well as to enhance the performance of the motion planning task. Experimental results obtained from different model configurations on the Longest6 benchmark have shown that our proposed model achieves competitive performance compared to baselines.

the 'sensor nodes' in a wireless sensor network are the individual devices that collect data and are powered independently. these nodes act as sensors and processors. the credentials of a compromised node can be used to create multiple identical 'clone' nodes elsewhere in the network. the community could be harmed in the short or long term by the proliferation of these clone nodes. In this paper, the authors discuss a hashing-based technique that avoids the need for this information. Every cluster's leader implements the proposed method for locating clone nodes, considering the hierarchy present in the data. the simulation results demonstrate its superiority over RDB-R and TDS. © 2022 ieee.

this paper presents a humidity sensor consisting of a two-port piezoelectric bulk wave resonator and a uniform layer of graphene oxide (GO) film, aiming for the applications of human-machine interaction. With the help of the hydrophilic GO film, the sensor possesses high sensitivity (195 Hz/%RH with an operating frequency of 10.5 MHz) and low hysteresis (less than 3%RH) to environmental humidity changes. Meanwhile, the humidity response of the sensor is rapid, highly repeatable and stable, which endows the sensor a fast and accurate response to the approach of a human finger. Moreover, by leveraging the different reactions of the sensor to the finger approaching and staying for various lengths of time, the noncontact information input can be realized in the form of Morse code.

Autonomous robots operating in complex environments face the critical challenge of identifying and utilizing environmental cover for covert navigation to minimize exposure to potentially harmful targets. We propose EnCoMP, an enhanced navigation framework that integrates offline reinforcement learning and our novel Adaptive Target-Aware Visibility Estimation (ATAVE) algorithm to enable robots to navigate covertly and efficiently in diverse outdoor settings. ATAVE is a dynamic probabilistic target modeling technique that we designed to continuously assess and mitigate potential targets in real-time, enhancing the robot's ability to navigate covertly by adapting to evolving environmental and target conditions. Moreover, our approach generates high-fidelity multi-map representations, including cover maps, potential target maps, height maps, and goal maps from LiDAR point clouds, providing a comprehensive understanding of the environment. these multi-maps offer detailed environmental insights, helping in strategic navigation decisions. the goal map encodes the relative distance and direction to the target location, guiding the robot's navigation. We train a Conservative Q-Learning (CQL) model on a large-scale dataset collected from real-world environments, learning a robust policy that maximizes cover utilization, minimizes target exposure, and maintains efficient navigation. We demonstrate our method's capabilities on a physical Jackal robot, showing extensive experiments across diverse terrains. these experiments demonstrate EnCoMP's superior performance compared to state-of-the-art methods, achieving a 95% success rate, 85% cover utilization, and reducing target exposure to 10.5%, while significantly outperforming baselines in navigation efficiency and robustness.

To solve the routing holes in wireless sensor networks caused by high energy consumption of cluster head nodes and shortage of spectrum, a dynamic clustering based method for wireless sensor network networking control is presented. In the early stage of cluster networking, the communication efficiency index is constructed by collecting the signal-to-noise ratio and energy consumption of wireless sensors (nodes), and the cluster head node and working frequency are selected. To avoid the routing holes caused by cluster head node death, periodically check the communication efficiency index of the nodes to dynamically adjust the cluster head node and working frequency. A smooth transition between old and new cluster head nodes is achieved by substituting nodes. this control method ensures that a wireless sensor with the best performance always has a stable communication with the external terminal as the cluster head node in the wireless sensor network, and improves the performance of the entire wireless sensor network.

Recent trends in systems engineering include integration of very large-scale systems, which entails significant challenges when they are geographically dispersed. In these scenarios, intelligent integration of distributed large-scale systems requires significant coordination among hardware elements as well as all software components. the approach of integrated systems (both computing platform and experimental equipment) for end-to-end orchestration is called federation. Virtual frameworks can aid in the testing, assessment, and implementation of a functional system of interconnected resources. We present an emulation framework that replicates the software environments of multi-site federations of computing systems and instruments. Our emulation framework allows systems engineers to reduce development cost and avoid disruptions to production infrastructure. Our framework was effectively used to develop and test software modules for various tasks including container orchestration and instrument access. For performance assessment, however, the emulated framework is severely limited in providing accurate network and IO measurements at 10 Gbps and higher data rates. the data transfer performance profiles estimated using these emulated measurements are usually inaccurate for high bandwidth and high latency connections, since emulation does not accurately reflect the critical network transport dynamics. We utilize measurements from a physical testbed with hardware network emulators to obtain data transfer profiles that closely match the expected profiles for the emulated federations. We show the effectiveness of our approach by an illustrative example of integrated (federated) multi-site ultra large-scale systems that are connected via high speed wide area networks.

A captivating set of hypotheses from the field of neuroscience suggests that human and animal brain mechanisms result from few powerful principles. If proved to be accurate, these assumptions could open a deep understanding of the way humans and animals manage to cope with the unpredictability of events and imagination. Modern distributed systems also deal with uncertain scenarios, where environments, infrastructures, and applications are widely diverse. In the scope of Edge-Fog-Cloud computing, leveraging these neuroscience-inspired principles and mechanisms could aid in building more flexible solutions able to generalize over different environments. In this work, we focus on the approaches that center on high-level, general strategies, like the Free Energy Principle and Global Neuronal Workspace theories. the goal of exploring these techniques is to introduce principles that can potentially help us build distributed systems able to jointly work on the whole computing continuum, from the Edge to the Cloud, with self-adapting capabilities, i.e., dealing with uncertainty and the need for generalization, which is currently an open issue.

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor has become one of the primary sensors in robotics and autonomous system for high-accuracy situational awareness. In recent years, multi-modal LiDAR systems emerged, and among them, LiDAR-as-a-camera sensors provide not only 3D point clouds but also fixed-resolution 360 degrees panoramic images by encoding either depth, reflectivity, or near-infrared light in the image pixels. this potentially brings computer vision capabilities on top of the potential of LiDAR itself. In this paper, we are specifically interested in utilizing LiDARs and LiDAR-generated images for tracking Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in real-time which can benefit applications including docking, remote identification, or counter-UAV systems, among others. this is, to the best of our knowledge, the first work that explores the possibility of fusing the images and point cloud generated by a single LiDAR sensor to track a UAV without a priori known initialized position. We trained a custom YOLOv5 model for detecting UAVs based on the panoramic images collected in an indoor experiment arena with a motion capture (MOCAP) system. By integrating with the point cloud, we are able to continuously provide the position of the UAV. Our experiment demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed UAV tracking approach compared with methods based only on point clouds or images. Additionally, we evaluated the real-time performance of our approach on the Nvidia Jetson Nano, a popular mobile computing platform.

this paper presents a new capture method for laser triangulation sensors consisting in replacing the lens with a slit - effectively making it a pinhole camera - and exploiting diffraction effects. this new method circumvents optical aberrations such as spherical, defocusing, coma, field curvature, and lens distortion, as well as lens flare to a point where it can be virtually ignored. Moreover, using a slit reduces the number of optical parts and simplifies the modeling of the laser spot to find its center. To test our proposed method, we generated data sets taking pictures with both a lens and a slit on different materials placed on a worm gear with its position controlled by a high-precision step motor. With this data, we extracted the center of the laser spot with different image processing algorithms. It was then possible to assess the goodness of fit of the triangulation curve using the sets of captured points by both methods. We show that not only we circumvent the adverse effects of optical aberrations and lens flares, we obtain a more accurate estimation of the actual known distance of the target. © 2023 ieee.
