this paper presents a methodology to design a Lane Centering Assistance (LCA) system. It proposes an original approach to deal with the large parametric uncertainties encountered by automotive design engineers. Indeed, the same controller is supposed to be used for a specific vehicle regardless its configuration (tire, load, motorization, etc.). the methodology consists in a gradual insertion of the designers expertise in order to reduce as much as possible the inherent pessimism of a multi-model design approach. It also proposes some direct parameters to easily adjust the sought trade-off between performance (low lateral error) and driving feeling (jerks). the proposed design process is validated by high-fidelity simulations using complete nonlinear vehicle models. Advanced numerical simulation models for continuous casting of steel were developed in Finland by Casim Consulting and Aalto University in cooperation with the University of Oulu and the steel industry. the aim was to develop models that are scientifically rigorous, but also computationally fast enough to be used in online applications. the models developed are a transient three-dimensional heat transfer model, CastManager, and a solidification and microstructure model, IDS. the computing time of these models are short, and they are integrated together in one online concept. this concept is installed in the automation systems of four slab casters in Finland. Testing and validation work is in progress. the system simulates the important heat transfer, solidification and microstructural phenomena in continuous casting online. the future aim is that this information will be used for online quality control and for optimizing the process conditions to avoid formation of defects. Many quality indices have already been developed. A steady state version of the CastManager tool has also been developed, called Tempsimu.

this paper presents an active disturbance rejection control scheme to automatically regulate the glucose level in type 1 diabetic patients. Although the blood glucose system is nonlinear, in this control approach, it is represented as a linear perturbed system, whose lumped disturbance input is estimated by an Extended State Observer (ESO) and then compensated by an robust controller tuned with Quantitative Feedback theory (QFT). the robust control scheme uses a Smith predictor for the time delay compensation and allows taking into account the inter-patient variability presented in the glucose control problem. In order to validate the effectiveness of this approach, the controller is tested in silico on a cohort of adult patients of the UVA/Padova metabolic simulator, which has been accepted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In silico results indicate that safe blood glucose control can be achieved by the proposed controller. Copyright (C) 2019. the Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A case study problem of damping oscillations of a pendulum by moving a pivot in vertical direction is presented. the motivation for solving this task comes from a broader research on designing advanced control algorithms for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) carrying a suspended payload. First, a nonlinear model for vertical motion of a quadcopter carrying a payload is derived and simplified to a nonlinear pendulum-like model. the main result is in deriving a nonlinear time-delay control law allowing to predefine a damping factor of the oscillations. Note that the problem at hand cannot be solved by a linear controller, as the oscillatory mode is not controllable once the model is linearised. the control law is then extended from pendulum to the quadcopter model considering an outer loop to control the horizontal motion. the theoretical results are then validated by simulations. this paper is about the problem of the vibration damping for a thin flexible beam, with an Euler-Bernoulli configuration, thanks to a new type of output feedback controller based on delayed proportional actions. the considered beam is equipped with two piezoelectric patches: one of them works as a sensor and the other as an actuator. Each one of them is bonded on one side of the beam and both are collocated. the model of this system is obtained numerically with a finite element modeling, leading to a linear state-space model. this paper addresses the design of a controller based on proportional and delayed-proportional actions on the input and output signals. the purpose of this work is to investigate the properties of the proposed output feedback controller in terms of vibration damping and of robustness. this controller is based on a rightmost-characteristic root assignment approach. Simulation results show the effectiveness of this controller design method and its ability to assign several poles of a linear system with fewer degrees of freedom than a minimal order linear controller with the usual pole placement technique. Designing interfaces for effective decision-making supports for complex, dynamic systems is a challenging task. Besides the already challenging task of determining the visual form, the task of defining the content of these supports can be even more demanding. Especially for an unstable and complex work domain with multiple stakeholders and multiple interrelated systems, e.g., commercial flight operations. Various methodologies for designing such supports have been introduced in the last decades. In this paper two methodologies, Ecological Interface Design (EID) and Applied Cognitive Work Analysis (ACWA) are compared to determine what methodology is best suited for the design of an in-flight decision support system. the methodologies are compared on two aspects, (1) development of the knowledge-based model and (2) the means to translate this model into requirements for the actual representation. the functional abstraction network (FAN), as part of the ACWA, is the preferred knowledge-based modelling method for capturing a complex multi-system work domain, like commercial flight operations. Mainly due to the increased flexibility in modeling and ease of extending the model. the ACWA is also found to the preferable method to translate the functional model into representation requirements due to its structured step-wise and system engineering inspired approach. In this study, a new data-driven multivariate multiscale statistical process monitoring method based on singular spectrum analysis (SSA) and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is proposed for fault detection in chemical process systems. SSA extracts the trends of process signals using the eigenvalues of trajectory matrices while EMD uses the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) to capture the signal trends through sifting process. the results obtained from the industrial and simulated case studies showed that SSA and conventional multivariate statistical process monitoring technique such as principal component analysis (PCA) failed to extract the nonstationary and nonlinear trends in the signal effectively. As an alternative, in this study, SSA is combined with EMD decomposition prior to the process monitoring procedure using PCA. the efficiency of EMD in analyzing the nonstationary and nonlinear signals enhanced the performance of linear SSA techniques by combining the two techniques in this study. Experimental and simulation results also revealed that fault detection using EMD is comparable to the combined technique. Mathematical control models are widely used in tuning manual control systems and understanding human performance. the most common model, the crossover model, is severely limited, however, in describing realistic human control behaviour in relevant control tasks as it is only valid for tracking with a compensatory display. this paper first discusses the state-of-the-art in modelling human control in tracking with pursuit displays. It is shown that, although both tasks seem very similar, the separate presentation of target and system output signals allows operators to adopt a huge variety in control strategies, which makes the development of a universal model for pursuit control a challenge. Two recent models are then described which can act as precursors to such a universal model. third, system identification choices and issues are discussed for pursuit tracking tasks. Finally, it is argued that it is inevitable that time-varying rather than time-invariant methods are needed to properly describe human behaviour in the pursuit tracking task, as skilled operators will learn to characterize the probabilistic nature of the task, which cannot be captured in a single, linear, time-invariant model. Human modelling approaches are typically limited to feedback-only, compensatory tracking tasks. Advances in system identification techniques allow us to consider more realistic tasks that involve feedforward and even precognitive control. In this paper we study the human development of a feedforward control response while learning to accurately follow a ramp-shaped target signal in the presence of a disturbance acting on the controlled element. An experiment was conducted in which two groups of eight subjects each tracked ramps of different steepnesses in a random or ordered fashion. In addition, ordered runs were followed by a 'surprise' run with a random ramp steepness. Results show that operators learn rapidly, continue to learn during the entire experiment, and can adapt very quickly to surprise situations. Experiments involving learning operators are challenging, as it is difficult to balance-out all experimental conditions and control for inevitable differences between (groups of) subjects. this paper addresses the problem of drug injection schedules design for cancer treatment, in the presence of model parametric uncertainties. It is commonly known that achieving optimal recovery performances under uncertainties is a complex task. therefore, we propose to use a recent optimal control approach, based on the moment optimization framework. this method allows to formulate and solve robust optimal control problems by taking into account uncertain parameters and initial states, modeled as probability distributions. We analyse a two dimensional model that describes the interaction dynamics between tumor and immune cells. Furthermore, we derive statistically optimal combined strategies of chemo- and immunotherapy treatments, assuming the knowledge of probability distributions of some uncertain model parameters, namely, the tumor growth rate and the rate of immune cells influx. Numerical simulations are carried out in order to illustrate the effects of parametric uncertainties on dynamics, when using a nominal injection profile.
