this paper presents a heuristic tuning method for a recently proposed model-based coupling algorithm. the purpose of the coupling algorithm is to mitigate effects caused by non ideal coupling of different subsystems where coupling imperfections like time delays, data losses or noisy measurements degrade the overall system performance. If the coupling algorithm is well tuned, a consistency criterion can be used for online closed-loop diagnosis. the simplicity and effectiveness of the proposed tuning and diagnosis approach is demonstrated via a laboratory experiment. these days, more and more responsibility is transferred to technical systems. Beyond that, the amount of interacting components increases on and on. To ensure that these systems are safe and reliable and to avoid unnecessary harm, safety engineers have to identify the weak points of these system to be able to correct them. Due to the steadily increasing system complexity, traditional approaches successively are reaching their limit. To efficiently support safety engineers during their work, model-based system analysis approaches try to facilitate these task. the modeling language smartIflow is such an approach. With smartIflow it is possible to model and simulate systems on a high abstraction level and yet retain enough information to reach an almost realistic behavior. In this work the capabilities of smartIflow are evaluated using the Wheel Brake System specified in ARP4761 and well-known by most avionics safety engineers. For this purpose the Wheel Brake System is modeled with smartIflow. After that, the smartIflow Workbench is used to simulate and verify the model in relation to the safety requirements defined in ARP4761. Residual gas fraction (RGF) significantly affects fuel efficiency and emission of combustion engines, and usually be regulated by managing variable valve timing (VVT) system. Cyclic RGF regulation is challenging due to nonlinear parameter-varying dynamics as well as stochastic property of controlled objects. this paper addresses this issue by designing an adaptive internal model controller (AIMC) combined with statistical feedback criterion. Firstly, closed-loop RGF regulation problem based on VVT control is formulated. Secondly, AIMC is adopted to online identify plant dynamics and its inverse model. Note that the statistical criterion is creatively introduced in the feedback channel of AIMC to handle the stochastic property of RGF. Finally, experiments performed on an engine test bench show that the proposed controller not only possesses advantages of AIMC but also alleviates stochastic noise in feedback channel. We explore the problem of identification of LPV models when the scheduling variables are not known in advance and the model parameters exhibit a dynamic dependence on them. We consider an affine ARX model structure whose parameters vary with time. We solve for the model's parameters and scheduling variables in two steps. In the first step, we use the measured input-output data to realize a parameter trajectory by solving a regularized Hankel matrix rank minimization problem. the regularization penalty is guided by the prior knowledge regarding the nature of system's time variation. In the second step, the scheduling variables are estimated as parameters of a sparse ARX structure relating the model's parameters to the measured input-output variables. the effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated with two practical examples. Distributed fault diagnosis has been proposed as an effective technique for monitoring large scale, nonlinear and uncertain systems. It is based on the decomposition of the large scale system into a number of interconnected subsystems, each one monitored by a dedicated Local Fault Detector (LFD). Neighboring LFDs, in order to successfully account for subsystems interconnection, are thus required to communicate with each other some of the measurements from their subsystems. Anyway, such communication may expose private information of a given subsystem, such as its local input. To avoid this problem, we propose here to use differential privacy to pre-process data before transmission. (C) 2018, ifac (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. this paper introduces a mathematical model and methodology for detecting and analysing nociceptor stimulation effects by means of non-invasive evaluation of the skin impedance in the hand palm. the derivation of the model is based on multi-scale physiological stages during perception of pain in awake individuals and contains elements of fractional calculus. the result is a lumped fractional order impedance model, to be used in a personalised way, i.e. per individual and not per population distribution data. A measurement device and a protocol have been determined in collaboration with Ghent University Hospital pain specialists. the experiments support our claim that changes occur in skin impedance during stimulation, i.e. when perceived as pain in one awake healthy volunteer. Following this proof of concept study, the model enables simulation of how nociceptor stimulation enters the systemic process of pain, for further analysis and development within the regulatory loops of pain management practices. In this preliminary work, we consider the problem of detecting cyber-attacks in a linear system equipped with a Model Predictive controller, where the feedback loop is closed over a non-ideal network, and the process is subject to a random Gaussian disturbance. We adopt a model-based approach in order to detect anomalies, formalizing the problem as a binary hypothesis test. the proposed approach exploits the analytical redundancy obtained by computing partially overlapping nominal system trajectories over a temporal sliding window, and propagating the disturbance distributions along them. the recorded data over such window is then used to define a probabilistic consistency index at each time step in order to make a decision about the presence of possible attacks. In current supply chains (SC), many process steps are not yet being monitored for proper quality. Adding product and process quality supervision can improve supply chain performance by reducing production loss and emergency transports. Due to its globally distributed supply chains, the automotive industry, in particular, offers many opportunities for application of quality supervision. this paper describes an approach for integrating sensor based quality data into supply chain management (SCM). It outlines the structure of a supply chain event management (SCEM) system that includes mobile and stationary sensors, data repositories and software services. In addition, it shows how to enhance the Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) communication standard in order to share sensor based quality data. In this context, the paper describes the necessary additions to the standard and provides an example how these may be used. this paper presents the design and implementation of a distributed adaptive fault tolerant leader-following formation control scheme for a team of uncertain cooperative mobile robots under a bidirectional communication topology with possibly asymmetric weights and subject to actuator and nonlinear process faults. A local fault-tolerant control (FTC) component is designed for each ground robot using local measurements and suitable information exchanged between neighboring agents. Each local FTC component consists of a fault diagnosis module and a reconfigurable controller module comprised of a baseline controller and two adaptive fault-tolerant controllers activated after fault detection and after fault isolation, respectively. the FTC algorithms are implemented and demonstrated using a team of ground mobile robots. An active failure and fault tolerant control scheme for an underwater remotely operated vehicle is proposed in this work. the proposed solution is based on a fault tolerant allocation, which takes into account an estimate of the faults on the vehicle's thrusters for an accurate redistribution of the control effort. the diagnosis is based on a sliding mode observer, which generates three residuals and allows to evaluate the health condition of each actuator of the vehicle. the scheme can be adapted to any control law for the vehicle dynamics, and has been tested in simulation using a backstepping controller for the dynamics and with real world parameters, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed active fault tolerant control scheme.
