this paper studies a set-based unknown input observer based on zonotopes for discrete-time descriptor systems affected by uncertainties with application to state estimation and robust fault detection. In this paper, two types of uncertainties are considered: (i) disturbances and noise both bounded by zonotopes;(ii) unknown inputs that can be decoupled. In terms of different applications, the observer gain for state estimation is designed to minimize the effects of unknown-but-bounded disturbances and noise as well as state estimation errors. On the other hand, for robust fault detection, in addition to attenuating uncertainties, the designed observer gain is also expected to be sensitive to faults. To achieve this goal, we propose an iterative algorithm to design the fault detection gain. this paper presents an aggregated model of Active Distribution Networks (ADNs) appropriate for power system restoration studies. the ADN considers aggregated loads and inverter based generation, such as wind and photovoltaic generation. the load model incorporates: i) time series data for consumption;ii) voltage and frequency dependency;iii) under frequency load shedding;iv) disconnection behavior;and v) cold load pick-up. the generation model considers: i) time series data for generation;ii) over frequency active power reduction;iii) disconnection;and iv) reconnection behavior. the ADN model covers dynamic phenomena in the time scale of tens of seconds up to several minutes with the focus on frequency dynamics. Manual manufacturing and assembly systems radically changed after the advent of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0). the production paradigm shift to mass personalization involves the customers since the product design phase. the remarkable variety and complexity of these processes is tackled by highly skilled human operator, which perform value added and non-repetitive tasks. thus, the virtualization of manual operations represents a great opportunity to monitor, analyze and successively optimize these production processes. Within this context, this research proposes an original hardware/software architecture called Motion Analysis System (MAS) developed to monitor and to evaluate manual manufacturing and assembly processes through motion capture technologies. the MAS adopts a hardware architecture represented by a network of depth cameras, e.g. a marker-less optical motion capture, to digitalize the operator movements and postures at 30 Hz while he performs production activities. A customized software architecture exploits these data in relation to the workstation 3D layout to automatically and quantitatively evaluate a set of productive KPIs. the MAS represents a reliable, powerful and meaningful tool for production managers and practitioners able to provide an in-depth time and space analysis of the activities performed by an operator, as the walking paths, the accessed picking locations, the used space within the workstation and the hand movements. Finally, this contribution ends with a real industrial application of the MAS which analyzes the manual assembly processes of a microwave oven. the system setup is presented and discussed along with the case study key results and findings. Nowadays power grids are intelligent since their protection, supervision and control are held by a communication network through which different Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) are interoperating. To design and maintain an efficient Substation Communication Network (SCN) with high transmission quality, developing a unitary mathematical model of the SCN data traffic as underlying paradigm of any control design approach is an important issue. In this paper, a stochastic representation of data traffic is derived, and a parametric analysis over the communication channel characteristics is presented. the identification method is illustrated on an electrical distribution grid containing two renewable sources which are exchanging information by means of IEC 61850 GOOSE (Generic Object -Oriented Substation Event) communication protocol in the context of a simple distributed reactive power control. the co-simulation and code process of both electrical and communication configurations are performed in MATLAB (R)/Simulink (R) environment. this paper addresses the selection and the monitoring of some key flight parameters along with their estimation in nominal and degraded flight conditions including faulty sensors situations. Anticipating more availability of flight parameters for future aircraft, isolating faulty measurements and reconstructing through time the missing signals is a challenging objective for Flight control systems, especially because some of them are essential for control purposes. To this end, this paper proposes a solution based on virtual sensors which make use of an Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter supplemented by dedicated Fault Detection and Isolation algorithm. It provides the ability for the longitudinal flight parameters of a civil aircraft to be estimated on-line before and after the occurrence of one or several failures. To facilitate onboard implementation, the main aerodynamic coefficients are approximated by a set of surrogate models. the proposed approach offers interesting monitoring capabilities including the detection of common mode failures (i.e., simultaneous failures occurring on redundant sensors). Real flight data involving strong atmospheric perturbations, 3-axis winds and successive faults on the static and total pressure probes from the take-off to the cruise is shown to evaluate the performances of the approach in terms of detection, isolation, estimation and reconfiguration capabilities (C) 2018, ifac (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. this paper presents an approach to control the remaining useful lifetime (RUL) of a friction drive system. the approach is based on the assumption that the system deterioration is a consequence of the motion control actions. these control actions have short-term objectives that have to be modified, based on the predicted RUL, to be compatible with the required/desired RUL. Here, a RUL actuating principle is proposed in order to control the RUL. that actuating principle is based on a parametric varying filter which modifies the motion control realization based on the available information about the expected RUL. the total RUL control architecture also includes an operating condition estimator, a system state estimator, and a RUL predictor. the RUL controller determines the parameters of the actuating filter by solving an on-line optimization problem. the RUL controller has to solve the RUL control problem by considering a trade-off between the desired motion control actions and the desired RUL. A desirable property in fault-tolerant controllers is adaptability to system changes as they evolve during systems operations. An adaptive controller does not require optimal control policies to be enumerated for possible faults. Instead it can approximate one in real-time. We present two adaptive fault-tolerant control schemes for a discrete time system based on hierarchical reinforcement learning. We compare their performance against a model predictive controller in presence of sensor noise and persistent faults. the controllers are tested on a fuel tank model of a C-130 plane. Our experiments demonstrate that reinforcement learning based controllers perform more robustly than model predictive controllers under faults, partially observable system models, and varying sensor noise levels. An integrated fault detection and fault-tolerant control scheme are proposed for uncertain strict-feedback systems with unmeasurable states in this paper. A fault detector, which comprises a residual generator with a prescribed performance and a tight time-varying threshold calculated from the prescribed performance bound, is first designed. After the faults are detected, a fault-tolerant controller is then proposed where the residual generator is regarded as the reference model of the virtual actuator. It is shown that all system states and estimation errors are uniformly bounded before the detection of faults and converge to zero when the proposed fault-tolerant controller is deployed. Water scarcity is becoming an increasing problem worldwide, and an issue compounding the problem is water leakage in the piping networks delivering potable/consumable water to end-users (Sensus, 2012). In this paper, we consider the problem of isolating leakages in water supply networks using reduced network models. Using a reduced order model of the network, the expected behaviour of the network can be estimated and then compared with actual measurements obtained from the network. the result of this comparison is a set of residuals which are used to isolate a leakage to a network node. the localization is based on a sensitivity matrix which captures the residuals' sensitivities to leakages. As the reduced order model is adaptive based on measurements from the network, the reduced order model is plug-and-play commissionable. the calculation of the sensitivity matrix is based on an EPANET model of the network and is performed off-line. A class of large-scale systems with decentralized information structures such as multi agent systems can be represented by a linear system with a generalized frequency variable. In these models agents are modelled through a strictly proper SISO state space model while the supervisory structure, representing the information exchange among the agents, is represented via a linear state-space model. In this paper the fundamental problem of residual generation, as a basic detector filter design task, is solved in the context of homogeneous multi-agent networks. In order to reduce the dependence of the filter on the particular agent and to exploit the inherent informational structure of the network system the same local-global structure is imposed to the filter as of the original system. It is shown that a stable detection filter can be designed if the same structural conditions are fulfilled as in the unstructured LTI case.
