Research in the area of automated cervical cytology has been prompted by the need to develop more efficient means of carrying out population screening programmes for cervical cancer, a disease responsible for the deaths of many women throughout the world annually. A historical survey of cytological image processing is given in this paper. the emphasis is placed on automated cervical cell processing under the fixed cell scan system.

Gene therapy of cancer is the transfer of genetic material to correct genetic mutations in malignant cells or destroy cancer cells through cytolysis or other mechanisms. Intratumoural injection is often used for direct delivery of viral particles (VP) into tumours. the temporal and spatial distributions of VP in the tissue of interest (TOI) following the injection may closely correlate withthe therapeutic results. thus, a theoretical model as a dispersion process is introduced to describe VP transport processes in the TOI. Which include mechanical flow, molecular diffusion, blood uptake, cellular absorption, and viral death and replication. Copyright (C) 2003 ifac.

Enzymes are crucial in accelerating metabolic reactions in the living organism. Dehydrogenases are the enzymes that catalyze a variety of oxidation-reduction reactions within the cells. In this study we have per-formed the structure-function analysis of dehydrogenases using the Resonant Recognition Model (RRM) based on digital signal processing (DSP) methods: Inverse Fourier Transform (IFT) and Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). Here we have determined the characteristic frequencies and the "hot spot" amino acids, and also predicted the location of protein's active site(s). the results of this computational analysis provide new insights into the structure-function relationships of the dehydrogenase proteins. A hybrid knowledge-and-model-based advisory system for intensive care ventilators is being developed. the system consists of two parts: a knowledge-based top-level module using neural fuzzy technology and a model-based lower-level module consisting of 4 sub-units. the system generates advice on four ventilator settings (the inspired fraction of oxygen (FiO(2)), positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), peak inspiratory pressure (PINSP) and ventilatory rate) based on the patient's routine and cardio-respiratory measurements. the validation results of the top-level module were encouraging. Validation of the integrated system using retrospective clinical data is underway. Copyright (C) 2003 ifac.

Sensing human emotion by robot is an interesting yet challenging problem. In recent times, the development of vision and voice systems has enabled robot mechanisms to exhibit some human sensing capability. In light of this, there has been a growing interest for integrating non-invasive techniques to promote mental well being for patients with emotional distress. Inspired by this work, this paper proposes a framework for an emotion sensing system that augments non-invasive methods such as facial expression, speech, and infrared. the focus is primarily to achieve higher precision for dealing with emotion signals that are captured by emotional robots. Metabolic (Reaven's) syndrome is a set of metabolic abnormalities including common diseases e.g. diabetes, hypertension. According to unknown pathogenesis quantitative approaches are used to analyse the adherence of the syndrome components. We have described quantitative changes in components adherence in obese patients during quantified weight loss. the number of factors describing the components of the disease is decreasing. Using an other approach (odds ratio calculation) we have described the adherence of colon cancer to diabetes. Statistical modelling was successfully used to quantify the adherence of disease components.

We have developed a tele-diagnosis system of echography (tele-echography system) to controlthe echographic diagnosis robot. the examiner moves it by handling a control device apart from the patient and obtaining the echogram and the scene of the patient. the places of the examiner and the patient are connected by network. Remote control was realized by Object Request Broker technique. We verified possibility of our system for clinical use by the experiment. the robot was stable to slight body movement. Remote diagnosis of echogram was possible with sufficient image quality after a skilled examiner got used to controlthe robot. the adult patient never felt any discomfort to the robot. Since required bandwidth of this system was at most 1 Mbps, we confirmed the ability of this system for mobile robotic telemedicine. Copyright (C) 2003 ifac

To be able to optimise performance variables such as rates of bed-occupancy, staff utilization and numbers of delayed or cancelled admissions in any healthcare unit, the rate at which patients are admitted to that unit must be controlled. However, before these performance variables may be controlled it is necessary to identify and measure those factors which limit optimisation and control. this paper presents the results of a Study which attempts to identify and measure control limiting factors in the operation of a surgical progressive-care system using a novel approach to control system evaluation. the recognition of epileptic waveforms from the electroencephalogram is an important physiological signal processing task, as epilepsy is still one of the most frequent brain disorders. the main goal of this paper is to present a new method to diagnose the epileptic waveforms directly from EEG, by performing a quick signal processing, which makes it possible to apply in on-line monitoring systems. the EEG signal processing is performed in two steps. In the first step, by using the multi-resolution wavelet decomposition, we obtain different spectral components (alpha, beta, delta, theta) of the measured signal. these components serve as input signals for the artificial neural network (ANN), which accomplishes the recognition of epileptic waves. the recognition rate for all test signals turned out to be over 95%.
