To enable decision makers to select sustainable wastewater treatment systems, insight into the sustainability of a wide variety of systems should be provided in a transparent way leaving room for adaptation and interpretation according to the local situation. To provide this insight a structured methodology comparing wastewater treatment systems with respect to sustainability is defined. Similar to life cycle assessment (LCA) three phases can be distinguished: (I)goal and scope definition, (2) inventory analysis, and (3) optimisation and results. In the goal and scope definition we set the system boundaries to include most of the water cycle and part of the food cycle. Furthermore, we defined a multi-disciplinary set of sustainability indicators including technical. economic, environmental, and socio-cultural aspects. In the inventory analysis these sustainability indicators are quantified using simple static models of wastewater unit operations. Selection of unit operations results in a model of a complete wastewater treatment system. In the optimisation phase the decision maker can weigh the different sustainability indicators and select sustainable options through integer programming.

When applied to large simulation models, the process of parameter estimation is also called calibration. Calibration of complex non-linear systems, such as activated sludge plants, is often not an easy task. On the one hand, manual calibration of such complex systems is usually time-consuming, and its results are often not reproducible. On the other hand, conventional automatic calibration methods are not always straightforward and often hampered by local minima problems. In this paper a new straightforward and automatic procedure, which is based on the response surface method (RSM) for selecting the best identifiable parameters, is proposed. In RSM, the process response (output) is related to the levels of the input variables in terms of a first- or second-order regression model. Usually, RSM is used to relate measured process output quantities to process conditions. However, in this paper RSM is used for selecting the dominant parameters, by evaluating parameters sensitivity in a predefined region. Good results obtained in calibration of A SM No.1 for N-removal in a full-scale oxidation ditch proved that the proposed procedure is successful and reliable.

Describes the path planning of an autonomous mobile robot using one camera-based sequence image processing. As an assumption, all objects in front of the mobile robot are located on the same plan. Using the moving camera located on the autonomous mobile robot, the robot extracts the angular points of obstacle objects, calculates the height using the assumption and discrepancy between two consecutive images. In the image processing, angular points of objects must correspond so that they deliver the size of objects. thus, the robot passes through if the object has not the height. Otherwise, the robot passes to one side if the obstacle object has the height. Using a newly self-developed mobile robot, the experiments showed the robot works well using this path planning method.

the increase in medical expenses resulting from longer life expectancy is an increasing serious social problem in Japan. Reducing the cost of clinical laboratory systems, increasing quality of service to patients, and safeguarding the health of hospital staff are important issues for hospitals. A flexible clinical laboratory system is needed to reduce system development cost. Automated clinical laboratory systems, for large and small hospitals alike, are needed in order to reduce waiting time and the risk of workers being exposed to infectious diseases. Flexible systems could meet all these needs. We have developed a modularized system architecture to provide a flexible clinical laboratory system. the hardware and software of the clinical and sample transfer equipment are modularized in this system. Each piece of equipment can autonomously decide where to transfer samples and how to process them. the clinical equipment works autonomously and can be added or suspended without influencing the other equipment. the transfer equipment is also autonomous, and the sample transfer lines can be changed easily in accordance with space limitations. We applied this modularized system architecture to a pre-analytical sample-handling system, and demonstrated its effectiveness. this system was developed by using equipment from different vendors, thus demonstrating that such a system can be easily built.

Dynamic simulation of complex industrial systems is discussed, and a summary is presented of over a decade of work in the modelling, simulation and control of cryogenic separation and liquefaction processes. the work includes not only successful applications but also the development of tools to facilitate the construction of the simulation flowsheets and their effective use in control system analysis and design. the use of these tools and of two commercial dynamic simulation packages is reviewed. the question of what is a required level of modelling detail in dynamic simulation applications is addressed. A general, rigorous dynamic model is described for studying the interactions of design and control in a double-effect distillation system. Two approaches are adopted. In the first, the steady-state process design and the control system are optimized sequentially;potential operability bottlenecks are identified and the economic advantage of double-effect systems over conventional single column systems is demonstrated. In the second approach, the process design and the control system are optimized simultaneously leading to a more economically beneficial system than that obtained using the sequential approach. In chemical kinetics and batch processes K variables are measured on the batches at regular time intervals. this gives a J x K matrix for each batch (J time points times K variables). Consequently, a set of N normal batches gives a three-way matrix of dimension (N x J x K). the case when batches have different length is also discussed. In a typical industrial application of batch modelling, the purpose is to diagnose an evolving batch as normal or not, and to obtain indications of variables that together behave abnormally in batch process upsets. Other applications giving the same form of data include pharmaco-kinetics, clinical and pharmacological trials where patients (or mice) are followed over time, material stability testing and other kinetic investigations. A new approach to the multivariate modelling of three-way kinetic and batch process data is presented. this approach is based on an initial PLS analysis of the ((N x J) x K) unfolded matrix ((batch x time) x variables) with 'local time' used as a single y-variable. this is followed by a simple statistical analysis of the resulting scores and results in multivariate control charts suitable for monitoring the kinetics of new experiments or batches. 'Upsets' are effectively diagnosed in these charts, and variables contributing to the upsets are indicated in contribution plots. In addition, the degree of 'maturity' of the batch can be as predicted vs. observed local time. the analysis of batch data with respect to various questions is discussed with respect to typical objectives, overview and summary, classification, and quantitative modelling. this is illustrated by an industrial example of yeast production. A circulatory model for the estimation of insulin sensitivity

Insulin sensitivity is commonly assessed by analysing intravenous glucose tests with a simple model, called the minimal model. However, the physiological meaning of the insulin sensitivity indices estimated using this model is not transparent. To overcome this problem, a circulatory model was developed to analyse intravenous glucose tests in which a tracer was injected together with glucose. Physiological parameters, such as glucose volume, clearance and production, were estimated. Insulin sensitivity was defined in terms of glucose clearance. the parameter values estimated in 5 normal subjects were in good agreement with the values reported in previous independent studies. Analysis of changes in heart rate can be useful in determining the state of various body systems. In particular the analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) is used in the assessment of autonomic function. this paper uses the discrete harmonic wavelet transform for a time-frequency analysis of HRV data to show changes in spectral power over time. Signals representing patient heart rate are presented, and methods for spectral and time-frequency analysis are described. three sets of patient data are then analysed using these methods. the results show the potential of time-frequency analysis in the assessment of medical disorders, such as the sleep apnoea syndrome, where transient alterations in autonomic function occur.
