Analysis of changes in heart rate can be useful in determining the state of various body systems. In particular the analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) is used in the assessment of autonomic function. this paper uses the discrete harmonic wavelet transform for a time-frequency analysis of HRV data to show changes in spectral power over time. Signals representing patient heart rate are presented, and methods for spectral and time-frequency analysis are described. three sets of patient data are then analysed using these methods. the results show the potential of time-frequency analysis in the assessment of medical disorders, such as the sleep apnoea syndrome, where transient alterations in autonomic function occur. Simulating traffic for an ATM network may be very rime consuming due to the large amount of transmitted cells, if traditional simulation modelling at cell level is employed. A possible means to speed lip the simulations is to model the traffic at a higher abstraction level. In this paper we evaluate different simulation modelling techniques on a scheme for call admission control in ATM networks. By generating simulation events only at the start and end of each constant-rate traffic burst, up to 85% reduction of the simulation rime was obtained while keeping the validity of the simulation model. this opens new possibilities to simulate large and complex networks with large volumes of high-speed traffic. In particular this leads us one step closer to simulating network performance in real time as a support To network management functions.

New modelling and control problems have arisen as chemical engineering has broadened its scope into areas such as materials processing and biotechnology. In addition, a move towards flexible manufacturing of specialty chemicals has generated more interest in batch operations, which is the normal manufacturing scheme in the new technology arenas. Advances in modelling, control and measurement techniques will be required to reach high levels of manufacturing productivity. this paper reviews some of the challenges faced in control of unconventional or nontraditional chemical processes. Although the capability of neural networks in nonlinear dynamics modelling is well-established, the reliability of the output heavily depends on the training data. the reliability is a serious problem in applying it to real problems. in this paper, we propose a radial basis functions network (RBFN) which evaluates its own reliability and improves itself recursively. this network approximates the input-output relationships with a piecewise linear regression. An adaptive internal model control algorithm in which the reliability of the model is used to tune the controller performance, is also proposed.

this paper describes a MATLAB-based computer-aided design tool, IRA-HPC, which accomplishes integrated system identification and robustness analysis For Horizon Predictive control (HPC), a model predictive control algorithm implemented on the Application Module of the Honeywell TDC 3000 distributed control system. the tool addresses lifecycle as well as functional aspects of the technology, withthe goal of making advanced control principles more accessible to the practising control engineer. IRA-HPC systematically performs the various stages of system identification in a control-relevant framework (addressing input design, parameter estimation, and model validation from the standpoint of the final purpose of the model, which is control system design), followed by robust HPC controller tuning using the Structured Singular Value (mu) paradigm as a basis. the benefits of the tool are shown experimentally in the modelling and control of a methanol/isopropanol pilot-scale distillation column, interfaced to an industrial-scale real-time computing testbed. the example demonstrates the practical feasibility of this tool and its benefits in terms of simplifying the choices of design variables in integrated identification and control design.
