Variable structured modelling and the concept of the functional state is considered. A method to obtain the state machine, which controls transitions between the functional states is introduced. the method includes both symbolic or logic and algorithmic components. the concept and the method are illustrated by a simple `wire model'. State estimation under the functional state concept and multimodel environment is demonstrated. Applications to bioreactor control are discussed with references to alpha-amylase and yeast fermentations.

Conventional modelling, state estimation, multi-step ahead prediction, and control of bioprocesses are often difficult owing to the uncertainties involved. Backpropagation multi-layer neural network models and fuzzy knowledge-based systems were constructed to overcome such problems. Neural networks were programmed in QuickC and implemented in a personal computer with an 80486/33 MHz processor. Object oriented programming in a Smalltalk/V environment was employed for the rule-based fuzzy expert systems. Results of multi-step ahead prediction both of the enzyme activity and biomass in a fed-batch glucoamylase fermentation, and of the adaptive estimation of substrate feed rate and biomass in a fed-batch baker's yeast fermentation were presented as examples. the potential of neural networks in the context of process control and hybrid systems was discussed.

the paper will illustrate the application of selected MATLAB packages to the modelling of a Cythus Striatus fermentation process and estimation of unmeasurable state variables. Two approaches for modellingthe fermentation process are adopted. In one approach, a linear model has been fitted to experimentally obtained data, and the Kalman filter has been used in conjunction withthis model to estimate the state variables. In the second techniques, kinetic model based on the Monod equation is derived. To overcome limitations of the MATLAB packages, a software tool has been developed to translate MATLAB into C source code. A general description of the software tools is given.

this paper deals withthe order reduction of mass balance dynamical models of bioprocesses under the assumption that some reactions proceed at much faster rates than the others. It is shown that this can be generically achieved by using singular perturbations. the proposed methodology requires, in the one hand, the definition of a small scalar parameter related to small and fast reaction rates and, in the other hand, the definition of a suitable change of coordinates which transforms the system into a form which clearly separates its two time-scales. A prototype example dealing with anaerobic digestion is used throughout the paper to illustrate the proposed methodology.

An unstructured mathematical model has been developed that predicts the concentration of glucose, biomass and product during the course of a recombinant *** fermentation producing high levels (e.g. 4 g/L) of bovine somatotropin. Inputs to the model include the glucose feed and temperature profiles throughout the fermentation and the initial glucose and biomass concentrations. In this preliminary version of the model the acetate concentration and ammonia feed are model inputs. the model parameters were estimated using results from a typical fermentation and the model was then shown to predict the effects on another fermentation of reduced glucose feeding. After further development the model will be used to optimize glucose feed and temperature profiles for high biomass (>40 g/L) fermentations.
