In this work, we apply quantum cellular automata (QCA) to study pattern formation and image processing in quantum-diffusion Schrodinger systems (QDSS) with triplet-valued (color-valued) diffusion coefficients. Triplet numbers have the real part and two imaginary parts (with two imaginary units). they form 3-D triplet algebra. Discretization of the Schrodinger equation gives "lattice based metamaterial models" with various triplet-valued physical parameters. the process of excitation in these media is described by the Schrodinger equations with the wave functions that have values in triplet algebras. If a traditional computer is thought of as a "programmable object", QDSS in the form of QCA is a computer of new kind and is better visualized as a "programmable material". the purpose of this work is to introduce new metamedium in the form of cellular automata. the cells are placed in a 2-D array and they are capable of performing basic arithmetic operating in the triplet algebra and exchanging massages about their state. Cellular automata like architectures have been successfully used for computer vision problems and color image processing. Such metamedia possess large opportunities in processing of color images in comparison with the ordinary diffusion media with the real-valued diffusion coefficients. the latter media are used for creation of the eye-prosthesis (so called the "silicon eye"). the color metamedium suggested can serve as the prosthesis prototype for perception of the color images.

Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) processing for biomass mapping involves large data volumes, and often includes relatively slow 3D object fitting steps that increase the processing time. this study aimed to test new features that can speed up the overall processing time. A new type of 3D voxel is used, where the horizontal layers are parallel to the Digital Terrain Model. this voxel type allows procedures to extract tree diameters using just one layer, but still gives direct tree-height estimations. Layer intersection is used to emphasise the trunks as upright standing objects, which are detected in the spatially segmented intersection of the breast-height voxels and then extended upwards and downwards. the diameters were calculated by fitting elliptical cylinders to the laser points in the detected trunk segments. Non-trunk segments, used in sub-treestructures, were found using the parent-child relationships between successive layers. the branches were reconstructed by skeletonizing each sub-tree branch, and the biomass was distributed statistically amongst the weighted skeletons. the procedure was applied to nine plots within the UK. the average correlation coefficients between reconstructed and directly measured tree diameters, heights and branches were R (2) = 0.92, 0.97 and 0.59 compared to 0.91, 0.95, and 0.63 when cylindrical fitting was used. the average time to apply the method reduced from 5hrs: 18mins per plot, for the conventional methods, to 2hrs:24mins when the same hardware and software libraries were used with the 3D voxels. these results indicate that this 3D voxel method can produce, much more quickly, results of a similar accuracy that would improve efficiency if applied to projects with large volume TLS datasets.

Until very recently, the generation of punctuation marks for automatic speech recognition (ASR) output has been mostly done by looking at the syntactic structure of the recognized utterances. Prosodic cues such as breaks, speech rate, pitch intonation that influence placing of punctuation marks on speech transcripts have been seldom used. We propose a method that uses recurrent neural networks, taking prosodic and lexical information into account in order to predict punctuation marks for raw ASR output. Our experiments show that an attention mechanism over parallel sequences of prosodic cues aligned with transcribed speech improves accuracy of punctuation generation. © Springer international Publishing AG 2017.

In this paper we discuss the potential of the integrated GPU to accelerate sorting by performing a partial sort prior to a comparison based CPU sort. We experiment along with several CPU comparison based sorting algorithms and outline the performance gain for a random input data set. We then analyze different ×86 SoC architectures, and show that by sorting chunks stored inside the onchip GPU memory, we can almost eliminate the impact the memory hierarchy has on performance. Finally, we discuss how our approach is different from previous designs, being specifically tailored for an SoC with an integrated GPU, able to improve on most of its known limitations (memory bandwidth, complexity, performance etc).

A coupled problem statement for aerogasdynamics, internal heat and mass transfer and thermal strength of heat shield structures of hypersonic vehicles is formulated. A method for numerical solving of the problem is suggested which is based on the iterative solution of the three types of detached problems: a gas dynamics problem for viscous heat-conducting flows, internal heat and mass transfer into constructions of hypersonic vehicles and thermoelasticity of shell constructions. An example of the numerical solution of the coupled problem of aerogasdynamics and thermal strength of elements of heat shield structures of an advanced vehicle is given. It is shown that due to the high temperatures of the aero-dynamic heating of the structure made of a polymer composite material there can appear a polymer phase thermodecomposition and intensive internal gas generation into the structure of the material.

In this paper, we compare a wide range of accelerator architectures (GPUs from AMD and NVIDIA, the Xeon Phi, and a DSP), by means of a signal-processing pipeline that processes radio-telescope data. We discuss the mapping of the algorithms from this pipeline to the accelerators, and analyze performance. We also analyze energy efficiency, using custom-built, microcontroller-based power sensors that measure the instantaneous power consumption of the accelerators, at millisecond time scale. We show that the GPUs are the fastest and most energy efficient accelerators, and that the differences in performance and energy efficiency are large.

Ontologies have proven to be useful for capturing and organizing knowledge as a hierarchical set of terms and their relationships. However, curating gene ontology data by hand requires specialized knowledge of certain field, which is inefficient. thus inferring gene ontology from the exponentially increased biological data is getting hot. Based on the Library of Integrated Network-Based Cellular Signatures (LINCS) data we came up with the hypothesis that genes participate in analogous biological processes might affect cells accordantly. By assessing cellular response after genes were knock out we built a similarity matrix with the Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) and clustered the genes with affinity propagation algorithm. Next we mapped the cluster result to gene ontology biological process data for annotation and enrichment analysis, which confirmed our hypothesis and made it possible to predict biological processes for unannotated genes from cellular response data after genes are knock out for the first time. We further validated the rationality from the gene ontology molecular function data. © 2017 ACM.

Particle filters estimate the state of dynamic systems through Bayesian interference and stochastic sampling techniques. parallel/distributed particle filters aim to improve the performance by deploying all particles on different processing units. However, the communication cost of transferring particles is high due to the centralized processing in resampling step. To reduce the communication cost without loss of accuracy, the hybrid particle routing policy is designed for the resampling step, which mainly executes particles resampling and exchanges locally and routes them globally every specific number of calculation steps. However, the global particle routing is more necessary when the convergence of particles is low. In this paper, we propose the adaptive particle routing algorithm, in which the local resampling and particle exchange are used, and the planned global particle routing is adopted only when the measured convergence is below the set threshold. the experimental results show the improved performance. ©2017 Society for Modeling & Simulation international (SCS).

Frequent sequential pattern mining is an important field in data mining. Compared with the static data, the stream data is a single scan data obtained in a continuous and real-time way. the frequent pattern mining algorithm of traditional static sequence database has been difficult to meet the frequent pattern mining requirements for streaming data. the traditional serial processing method is time-consuming and cannot meet the requirements of high performance processing. Based on the existing Pisa algorithm, this paper presents a parallel algorithm named parallel-Pisa, it can adjust the parallel strategy according to the different velocity of the stream data to improve the efficiency of the algorithm so that it can be better applied to frequent sequence pattern mining of stream data.

Intrusion detection systems need to be both accurate and fast. Speed is important especially when operating at the network level. Additionally, many intrusion detection systems rely on signature based detection approaches. However, machine learning can also be helpful for intrusion detection. One key challenge when using machine learning, aside from the detection accuracy, is using machine learning algorithms that are fast. In this paper, several processing architectures are considered for use in machine learning based intrusion detection systems. these architectures include standard CPUs, GPUs, and cognitive processors. Results of their processing speeds are compared and discussed. © 2016 ACM.
