this paper focuses on the use of Network-on-Chip (NoC) accelerators for Barnes-Hut N-Body simulations. NoC-based architecture is proposed to solve the communication bottleneck of processors with hundreds or even thousands of cores. An N-body simulation approximates the evolution of a system of bodies, e.g. an astrophysical system where each body represents a star or a galaxy. Despite the fact that the behaviour of Barnes-Hut algorithm has been studied on conventional multicore systems, graphics processing units and other accelerators, we explore key performance issues in the context of NoC platform. We investigate serial and parallel implementations, where the parallel version is analyzed in terms of network traffic. the results revealed that hot-spot and bursty traffic can congest the network, while long distance communication deteriorated system performance further. We propose algorithmic and interconnection optimizations. these include improved data locality, proper mapping and partially diagonal network. Evaluation results show that, compared with the original implementation, the average execution time and energy delay product are reduced by 25.3% and 31.6% respectively. the proposed design achieved 55.4× speed-up over 64 threads. © 2013 IEEE.

this paper introduces a low complexity frame-based object detection algorithm for H.264/AVC video streams. the method solely parses and evaluates H.264/AVC macroblock types extracted from the video stream, which requires only partial decoding. Different macroblock types indicate different properties of the video content. this fact is used to segment a scene in fore- and background or, more precisely, to detect moving objects within the scene. the main advantage of this algorithm is that it is most suitable for massively parallel processing, because it is very fast and combinable with several other pre- and post-processing algorithms, without decreasing their performance. the actual algorithm is able to process about 3600 frames per second of video streams in CIF resolution, measured on an Intel® Core™ i5-2520M CPU @ 2.5 GHz with 4 GB RAM.

Recent work demonstrates the feasibility and practical use of secure two-party computation [5, 9, 15, 23]. In this work, we present the first Graphical processing Unit (GPU)-optimized implementation of an optimized Yao's garbled-circuit protocol for two-party secure computation in the honest-but-curious and 1-bit-leaked malicious models. We implement nearly all of the modern protocol advancements, such as Free-XOR, Pipelining, and OT extension. Our implementation is the first allowing entire circuits to be generated concurrently, and makes use of a modification of the XOR technique so that circuit generation is optimized for implementation on SIMD architectures of GPUs. In our best cases we generate about 75 million gates per second and we exceed the state of the art performance metrics on modern CPU systems by a factor of about 200, and GPU systems by about a factor of 2.3. While many recent works on garbled circuits exploit the embarrassingly parallel nature of many tasks that are part of a secure computation protocol, we show that there are still various forms and levels of parallelization that may yet improve the performance of these protocols. In particular, we highlight that implementations on the SIMD architecture of modern GPUs require significantly different approaches than the general purpose MIMD architecture of multi-core CPUs, which again differ from the needs of parallelizing on compute clusters. Additionally, modifications to the security models for many common protocols have large effects on reasonable parallel architectures for implementation. Copyright 2013 ACM.

In this work, we present our implementation of a three-dimensional 5th order finite-difference weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme in double precision on CPU/GPU clusters, which targets on large-scale cosmological hydrodynamic flow simulations involving both shocks and complicated smooth solution structures. In the level of MPI parallelization, we subdivided the domain along each of three axial directions. then on each process, we ported the WENO computation to GPU. this method is memory-bound derived from the calculations of the weights and it becomes a greater challenge for a 3D high order problem in double precision. To make full use of impressive computing power of GPU and avoid its memory limitation, we performed a series of optimizations that are focused on memory accessing mode at all levels. We subjected this code to a number of typical tests for the evaluation of effectiveness and efficiency. Our tests indicate that, in a mono-thread Fortran code reference, the GPU version achieves a 12~19 speed-up and about 19~36 in the computation part. We analyzed the results on both Fermi and Kepler GPUs. We also outlined what is needed to further increase the speed by reducing the time spent on the communications part and other future work. © 2013 IEEE.

GPU architectures tend to be increasingly important in multi-core era nowadays due to their formidable computational horsepower. With the assistant of effective programming paradigms as CUDA, GPUs are widely adopted to accelerate scientific applications. Meanwhile, the surging energy consumption by GPUs becomes a major challenge to both GPU architects and programmers. In addition to the efforts designing energy efficient GPU architecture, comprehensive understanding on how programming affects the energy consumption of GPU application is also indispensable from the programmer perspective. In this paper, we present a programming-oriented PTX instruction level energy model to provide programmers the ability of predicting the energy consumption of their program. Distinct from previous models which require hardware performance counters or architectural simulations, our model relies on the PTX instruction of a CUDA program which is not only portable but also accurate. With the selected PTX instructions based on empirical study, we apply linear regression to build the GPU energy model. One appealing advantage of our model is that it does not require any instrumentation or profiling of the GPU application during execution. Actually, our model is able to advise the programmers step by step to illustrate how their way of programming impacts the final energy consumption, especially at the stage of hacking the codes. Our model is evaluated on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 with Rodinia benchmark suites. the results show the accuracy of our model is promising with average prediction error below 3.7%. With the help of our GPU energy model, the programmers are gaining valuable insights to improve the energy efficiency of the application. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2013.

Melody extraction from polyphonic music is a valuable but difficult problem in music information retrieval. the extraction incurs a large computational cost that limits its application. Growing processing cores and increased bandwidth have made GPU an ideal candidate for the development of fine-grained parallel algorithms. In this paper, we present a parallel approach for salience-based melody extraction from polyphonic music using CUDA. For 21 seconds of polyphonic clip, the extraction time is cut from 3 seconds to 33 milliseconds using NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 which is up to 100 times faster. the increased performance allows the melody extraction to be carried out for real-time applications. Furthermore, the evaluation of the extraction on huge datasets is also possible. We give insight into how such significant speed gains are made and encourage the development and adoption of GPU in music information retrieval field.

the Internetware" paradigm is fundamentally changing the traditional way of software development. More and more software projects are developed, maintained and shared on the Internet. However, a large quantity of heterogeneous software resources have not been organized in a reasonable and efficient way. Software feature is an ideal material to characterize software resources. the effectiveness of feature- related tasks will be greatly improved, if a multi-grained feature repository is available. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for organizing, analyzing and recommend- ing software features. Firstly, we construct a Hierarchical rEpository of Software feAture (HESA). then, we mine the hidden affnities among the features and recommend relevant and high-quality features to stakeholders based on HESA. Finally, we conduct a user study to evaluate our approach quantitatively. the results show that HESA can organize software features in a more reasonable way compared to the traditional and the state-of-the-art approaches. the result of feature recommendation is effective and interesting. the paper addresses the problem of pose-invariant recognition of faces via an MRF matching model. Unlike previous costly matching approaches, the proposed algorithm employs effective techniques to reduce the MRF inference time. To this end, processing is done in a parallel fashion on a GPU employing a dual decomposition framework. the optimisation is further accelerated taking a multi-resolution approach based on the Renormalisation Group theory (RGT) along with efficient methods for message passing and the incremental sub gradient approach. For the graph construction, Daisy features are used as node attributes exhibiting high cross-pose invariance, while high discriminatory capability in the classification stage is obtained via multi-scale LBP histograms. the experimental evaluation of the method is performed via extensive tests on the databases of XM2VTS, FERET and LFW in verification, identification and the unseen pair-matching paradigms. the proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art performance in pose-invariant recognition of faces and performs as well or better than the existing methods in the unconstrained settings of the challenging LFW database using a single feature for classification.

Mobile ad hoc networks are infrastructure less communication networks that are spontaneously created by a number of mobile devices. Due to the highly fluctuating topology of such networks, finding the optimal configuration of communication protocols is a complex and crucial task. Additionally, different objectives must be usually considered. Small changes in the values of the parameters directly affects the performance of the protocol, promoting one objective while reducing another. therefore, multi-objective optimisation is needed for fine tuning the protocol. In this work, we propose a novel parallel multi-objective local search that optimises an energy efficient broadcasting algorithm in terms of coverage, energy used, broadcasting time, and network resources. the proposed method looks for appropriate values for a set of 5 variables that markedly influence the behavior of the protocol to provide accurate tradeoff configurations in a reasonable short execution time. the new proposed algorithm is validated versus two efficient multi-objective evolutionary algorithms from the state of the art, offering comparable quality results in much shorter times. © 2013 IEEE.
