Parsing packet payloads according to the syntax and semantics of an application protocol is a key step in analyzing network traffic. However, it is still a challenge to fulfill this task with high speed(10Gbps+) because parsing packets through deep-content analysis to build a corresponding syntax tree requires tremendous computing resources. Multi-core architectures provide a viable solution for building high-performance parsers for application protocols. Existing sequential application protocol parsers are hard to be reused, and building a new protocol parser from scratch is error-prone and time-consuming. this paper proposes a general and efficient approach to building high-performance parallel application protocol parsers on multi-core platforms. First, the open-source lexical analyzer FLEX is used to describe a protocol and generate a sequential parser. then a source-to-source translation is performed to transform the sequential parser into a parallel one. Finally, an efficient parallel run-time system is built by employing lock-free design principles from top to bottom to support multi-threaded execution on multi-core processors. Experimental results show that our parsers achieve nearly 20Gbps for average HTTP packets and 5Gbps for the challenging smaller FIX packets.

An increasing number of distributed applications requires processing continuously flowing data from geographically distributed sources at unpredictable rate to obtain timely responses to complex queries. Examples of such applications come from the most disparate fields: from wireless sensor networks to financial tickers, from traffic management to click stream inspection. these requirements led to the development of a number of systems specifically designed to process information as a flow according to a set of pre-deployed processing rules. We collectively call them Information Flow processing (IFP) Systems. Despite having a common goal, IFP systems differ in a wide range of aspects, including architectures, data models, rule languages, and processing mechanisms. In this tutorial we draw a general framework to analyze and compare the results achieved so far in the area of IFP systems. this allows us to offer a systematic overview of the topic, favoring the communication between different communities, and highlighting a number of open issue that still need to be addressed in research. © 2011 Authors.

Graphics processing Units (GPUs) are becoming increasingly important in high performance computing. To maintain high quality solutions, programmers have to efficiently parallelize and map their algorithms. this task is far from trivial, leading to the necessity to automate this process. In this paper, we present a technique to automatically parallelize and map sequential code on a GPU, without the need for code-annotations. this technique is based on skeletonization and is targeted at image processing algorithms. Skeletonization separates the structure of a parallel computation from the algorithm's functionality, enabling efficient implementations without requiring architecture knowledge from the programmer. We define a number of skeleton classes, each enabling GPU specific parallelization techniques and optimizations, including automatic thread creation, on-chip memory usage and memory coalescing. Recently, similar skeletonization techniques have been applied to GPUs. Our work uses domain specific skeletons and a finer-grained classification of algorithms. Comparing skeleton-based parallelization to existing GPU code generators in general, we potentially achieve a higher hardware efficiency by enabling algorithm restructuring through skeletons. In a set of benchmarks, we show that the presented skeleton-based approach generates highly optimized code, achieving high data throughput. Additionally, we show that the automatically generated code performs close or equal to manually mapped and optimized code. We conclude that skeleton-based parallelization for GPUs is promising, but we do believe that future research must focus on the identification of a finer-grained and complete classification. © 2011 IEEE.

Multiple independent spanning trees have applications to fault tolerance and data broadcasting in distributed networks. there is a conjecture on independent spanning trees: any n-connected graph has n independent spanning trees rooted at an arbitrary vertex. the conjecture has been confirmed only for n-connected graphs with n ≤ 4, and it is still open for arbitrary n-connected graphs when n ≥ 5. In this paper, we provide a construction algorithm to find n independent spanning trees for the n-dimensional twisted-cube TN n, where N denotes the number of vertices in TNn. And for n ≥ 3, the height of each independent spanning tree on TNn is n+1. © 2011 IEEE.

Stream-processing systems inevitably face unpredictable variations in incoming event loads. One way of handling this without affecting end-to-end performance metrics, will be to dynamically distribute event-processing on multiple computers and thus avail compute power for optimal performance. More precisely, data streams are processed in part or in parallel on multiple computers connected by a high bandwidth network. the number of computers being used is to be varied dynamically to cope with input load fluctuations. this paper uses data from ambient kitchen to make a preliminary assessment of performance advantages by distribution of real-time data stream processing. the motivation is to leverage cloud computing for optimal realtime event processing. © 2011 Authors.

Many modern systems provide heterogeneous parallelism, for example NUMA multi-core processors and CPU-GPU combinations. Placement, scheduling and indeed algorithm choices affect the overall execution time and, for portable programs, must adapt to the target machine at either load-time or run-time. We see these choices as preserving I/O determinism but exposing performance non-determinism. We use Petri-nets as an intermediate representation for programs to give a unified view of all forms of performance non-determinism. this includes some scenarios which other models cannot support. Whilst NP-hard, efficient heuristics for approximating optimum executions in these nets would lead to performant portable execution across arbitrary heterogeneous architectures.

We propose an on-line hybrid BCI system that combines P300 and ERD. By employing both brain activity patterns (BAPs) in parallel and asynchronously, the system can issue different types of commands, for example, in robotic control scenarios. We present a method for reliably distinguishing between the two BAPs. We examined the level of false positives in P300 classification while a subject tries to evoke an ERD. We found this level to be as low as for regular P300 trials. Our system thus assumes the presence of ERD whenever classification of all P300 symbols is negative. Empirical results indicate that subjects can achieve good control over the hybrid BCI. In particular, subjects can switch spontaneously and reliably between the two BAPs.

We propose a content-based approach to mine parallel resources from the entire web using cross lingual information retrieval (CLIR) with search query relevance score (SQRS). Our method improves mining recall by going beyond URL matching to find parallel documents from non-parallel sites. We introduce SQRS to improve the precision of mining. Our method makes use of search engines to query for target document given each source document and therefore does not require downloading target language documents in batch mode, reducing computational cost on the local machines and bandwidth consumption. We obtained a very high mining precision (88%) on the parallel documents by the pure CLIR approach. After extracting parallel sentences from the mined documents and using them to train an SMT system, we found that the SMT performance, with 29.88 BLEU score, is comparable to that obtained with high quality manually translated parallel sentences with 29.54 BLEU score, illustrating the excellent quality of the mined parallel material. © 2011 AFNLP

Architecture modeling has a high popularity among IT professionals for developing new systems and services. Despite its popularity, architecture models are rarely used in the operations phase in the lifecycle of systems, and architecture models do not contains business parts of an organisation. the presented, ongoing research project targets to explore the relationship between business and IT architectures through combining existing architecture modeling frameworks. Building the relationship between business and IT architectures has high importance in designing measurement models, that includes not only both domain's KPIs, but also the relationship between them. © 2011 IEEE.

this paper proposes a novel method to resolve the coverage problem of SMT system. the method generates paraphrases for source-side sentences of the bilingual parallel data, which are then paired with the target-side sentences to generate new parallel data. Within a statistical paraphrase generation framework, we employ an object function, named Sentence Novelty, to select paraphrases which having the most novel information to the bilingual training corpus of the SMT model. Meanwhile, the context is considered via a language model in the source language to ensure the fluency and accuracy of paraphrase substitution. Compared to a state-of-the-art phrase based SMT system (Moses), our method achieves an improvement of 1.66 points in terms of BLEU on a small training corpus which simulates a resource-poor environment, and 1.06 points on a training corpus of medium size. © 2011 AFNLP
