In [6], [7] a method for isometric immersion of smooth m-variate n-dimensional vector fields, m = 1, 2, 3, 4, ..., n = 1, 2, 3, 4, ... onto fractal curves and surfaces was developed, thereby creating an opportunity to process high-dimensional geometric data on graphics processing units (GPUs) which in this case are used as relatively simple parallel computing architectures (with relatively very low price). For this construction, the structure of multivariate tensor-product;orthonormal wavelet bases was of key importance. In the two afore-mentioned papers, one of the topics discussed was the spatial localization of points in high dimensional space and their images in the plane (corresponding to pixels in the images when processed by the GPU). In the present;work we show how to compute approximately on the GPU multivariate intersection manifolds, using a new orthonorrnal-wavelet scaling-function basis-matching algorithm which offers considerable simplifications compared to the original proposed in [6], [7]. this algorithm is not as general as the Cantor diagonal type of algorithm considered in [6], [7], but;is crutch simpler to implement and use for global mapping of the wavelet basis indices in one and several dimensions. this new, simpler, approach finds also essential use in the results obtained in [5] which can be considered as continuation of the present paper, extending the range of applications of the present simplified approach to GPU-based computation of multivariate orthogonal wavelet transforms. the new method can be also used to accelerate the initial phase of the so-called Marching Simplex algorithm (or any other 'marching' algorithm for numerical solution of nonlinear systems of equations).

A new parallel numerical algorithm based on generating suitable random trees has been developed for solving nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations. this algorithm is suited for current high performance supercomputers, showing a remarkable performance and arbitrary scalability. While classical techniques based on a deterministic domain decomposition exhibits strong limitations when increasing the size of the problem (mainly due to the intercommunication overhead), probabilistic methods allow us to exploit massively parallel architectures since the problem can be fully decoupled. Some examples have been run on a high performance computer, being scalability and performance carefully analyzed. Large-scale simulations confirmed that computational time decreases proportionally to the cube of the number of processors, whereas memory reduces quadratically. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Video processing is computationally intensive and often has accompanying real-time or super-real-time requirements. For example, video tagging and surveillance systems need to robustly analyze video and automatically recognize the faces in real time. the semiconductor industry has shifted from increasing clock speeds to a strategy of growth through increasing core counts. this shift from single core to multi-core presents a major challenge to application developers to exploit sufficient parallelism in performance-sensitive applications. this give rise to a new computation paradigm for developing more advance algorithms. In this paper, we present a method to efficiently parallelize face detection which can be extended to any object detection algorithms for SMP architectures. We also show that a well-designed parallel code of face detection algorithm will result in a performance gain in excess of 2X on dual core systems.

the NLMeans filter, originally proposed by Buades et al., is a very popular filter for the removal of white Gaussian noise, due to its simplicity and excellent performance. the strength of this filter lies in exploiting the repetitive character of structures in images. However, to fully take advantage of the repetitivity a computationally extensive search for similar candidate blocks is indispensable. In previous work, we presented a number of algorithmic acceleration techniques for the NLMeans filter for still grayscale images. In this paper, we go one step further and incorporate both temporal information and color information into the NLMeans algorithm, in order to restore video sequences. Starting from our algorithmic acceleration techniques, we investigate how the NLMeans algorithm can be easily mapped onto recent parallel computing architectures. In particular, we consider the graphical processing unit (CPU), which is available on most recent computers. Our developments lead to a high-quality denoising filter that can process DVD-resolution video sequences in real-time on a mid-range CPU.

the purpose of this paper is to propose a method for constructing correct parallel processing programs from a problem description. the framework we adopt for this purpose is Equivalent Transformation Framework (ETF), which regards computation as transformation of definite clauses. In the framework, a problem's domain knowledge and a query are described in definite clauses, and its meaning is defined by a model of the set of definite clauses. then meaning-preserving transformation rules for the query are generated. We propose a parallel processing method based on “specialization”, a part of operation in the transformations, and discuss new parallel processing method based on the specialization that maintains correctness of the computation. the specialization is generalized notion of substitution in logic programming, and it allows more rich representation. We demonstrate the advantage of using specialization rather than substitution in constraint satisfaction problem solving.

In many image processing systems, an input grayscale image is reformed to make a clear image. After this reformation, the obtained gray-scale image is transformed into a binary image. Some gray-scale and binary image processing programs are implemented onto a linearly connected parallel processor. After partitioning an image into rectangular regions, each region is loaded in the main memory of a processing element (PE) as a partial image of the input image. PE's are connected through two communication memories. By accessing different memories, it accesses pixels stored on adjacent PE's without conflicts of memory access. In spite of the simple architecture of this linearly connected parallel processor, the results of the implementation of some programs indicate that execution times are improved, depending on the number of PE's.

the emergence of highly parallel computing platforms is enabling new trade-offs in algorithm design for automatic speech recognition. It naturally motivates the following investigation: do the most computationally efficient sequential algorithms lead to the most computationally efficient parallel algorithms? In this paper we explore two contending recognition network representations for speech inference engines: the linear lexical model (LLM) and the weighted finite state transducer (WFST). We demonstrate that while an inference engine using the simpler LLM representation evaluates 22× more transitions per second than the advanced WFST representation, the simple structure of the LLM representation allows 4.7-6.4× faster evaluation and 53-65× faster operands gathering for each state transition. We use the 5k Wall Street Journal corpus to experiment on the NVIDIA GTX480 (Fermi) and the NVIDIA GTX285 Graphics processing Units (GPUs), and illustrate that the performance of a speech inference engine based on the LLM representation is competitive with the WFST representation on highly parallel computing platforms. © 2010 ISCA.

this paper presents a preliminary PhD research towards developing a framework to evaluate and optimize application mapping algorithms for Network-on-Chip architectures. Several such algorithms have been proposed for mapping the threads of a parallel application on a NoC architecture. However, the performance of those algorithms is evaluated only on some specific NoC designs. A unified approach for evaluating such algorithms allows a better comparison of their performance and can potentially lead to some optimizations. the proposed framework is intended to be flexible so that the algorithms can be tested on different NoC designs. To this end, a scalable and flexible Network-on-Chip simulator is proposed. Some preliminary results obtained with this simulator are presented, too. they show the flexibility of this simulator and that it is feasible for addressing the application mapping problem in a unified manner.

Intra prediction is the most important intensive computing component in H.264 intra frame coder. Its high computational costs give huge pressure to most current embedded programmable processors, especially in real-time HD H.264 video encoding. Stream processing model, an emerging parallel processing model supported by GPUs and most programmable processors, bridges the gap between flexible programmable processors and high-performance special-purpose processors. this paper presents parallel streaming intra prediction on programmable processors. Two methods of 7-steps block parallel and macro block parallel are designed to deal with the restrictions of parallel. Experiment results of full HD H.264 encoding show that our parallel streaming intra prediction methods accomplish obvious speedup (more than 5 times) on different programmable processors. Moreover, the entire streaming H.264 encoder with our parallel intra prediction method achieves real-time performance for encoding full HD H.264 video sequence.

Natural human-robot interaction requires different and more robust models of language understanding (NLU) than non-embodied NLU systems. In particular, architectures are required that (1) process language incrementally in order to be able to provide early back channel feedback to human speakers; (2) use pragmatic contexts throughout the understanding process to infer missing information; and (3) handle the underspecified, fragmentary, or otherwise ungrammatical utterances that are common in spontaneous speech. In this paper, we describe our attempts at developing an integrated natural language understanding architecture for HRI, and demonstrate its novel capabilities using challenging data collected in human-human interaction experiments.
