the Brazilian middleware for Digital TV, known as Ginga, is currently divided in two subsystems: the declarative, named Ginga Nested Context Language (Ginga-NCL), and the procedural Ginga-Java (Ginga-J). the Ginga Development Network Project (GingaCDN) is a effort to created a unique middleware including the reference implementation of a Ginga middleware composed by the Ginga-NCL and the Ginga-J environments in a common core named Ginga Commom Core (GingaCC), reaching a full modular version of the middleware. the aim of this work is to present the Media processing implementation, one of the GingaCC components.

Power consumption is becoming a concern in programmable logic design as the size and performance of modern FPGAs increase. Data-parallel applications can work on different parallelism level so as to achieve different performance. this paper presents an investigation into the best parallelism degree-operating frequency tradeoff in order to find the optimum number of instances for each parallelizable task with adequate operating frequency minimizing energy and power for a given throughput constraint. Significant optimization can be achieved not only in power and energy but also in terms of adaptation to environment conditions such as variable data rate and scalability in the multimedia applications.

In this paper, we investigate the feasibility and benefits of resource overcommitment for compute intensive HPC applications in virtualized systems. We focus on overcommitting the CPU resource of a virtualized system for shared memory multi-threaded applications. We first study the behavior of HPC applications in a dedicated configuration where the resources are not overcommitted and not shared with other applications. Second, we evaluate the performance of the applications in a resource overcommitted configuration where the resources are overcommitted and shared with other applications. At last, we discuss issues toward modeling the performance of a resource overcommitted system. the performance modeling will help us utilize the system efficiently.

this paper presents a system of systems approach to implement high-speed searching to solve complex optimization problems. In most optimization techniques, parallel computation is not effective due to the complexity in algorithm. Here, the search sp ace is distributed within processing power of high performance computing resources. the methodology takes advantage of the Bees Algorithm and adapts it for best performance in a cluster grid computing environment. the effectiveness of the approach is verified by solving the problem of efficiency in a power plant by economizing fuel cost, efficiency of transmission losses and environmental hazardous emissions.

this paper focuses on adapting the Granular theories to system modelling for design and development of a service-oriented system. It highlights how to integrate Granular Computing Structures, development philosophy, methodology and UML for modelling, organising and addressing systems through a case study of Emergency Assistance Service System (EAS). the proposed approach to building software development solutions emphasizes the importance of using Granular Computing theories with system modelling as a critical initial step in developing and producing software architectures and applications. the paper also presents optimised and effective software development process for system modelling whilst reducing the complexity of the complex systems' design and development by exploiting Granular Computing and domain modelling productivity potential.

this paper deals with solving large instances of the Linear Sum Assignment Problems (LSAPs) under realtime constraints, using Graphical processing Units (GPUs). the motivating scenario is an industrial application for P2P live streaming that is moderated by a central tracker that is periodically solving LSAP instances to optimize the connectivity of thousands of peers. However, our findings are generic enough to be applied in other contexts. Our main contribution is a parallel version of a heuristic algorithm called Deep Greedy Switching (DGS) on GPUs using the CUDA programming language. DGS sacrifices absolute optimality in favor of a substantial speedup in comparison to classical LSAP solvers like the Hungarian and auctioning methods. We show the modifications needed to parallelize the DGS algorithm and the performance gains of our approach compared to a sequential CPU-based implementation of DGS and a mixed CPU/GPU-based implementation of it.

parallel algorithms for particle tracking are central to the modeling of a wide range of physical processes including cloud formation, spray combustion, flows of ash from wildfires and reactions in nuclear systems Here we focus on tracking the motion of cloud droplets with radii in the range from 10 to 60 mu m that are suspended in a turbulent flow field the gravity and droplet inertia are simultaneously considered Our codes for turbulent flow and droplet motion are fully parallelized in MPI (message passing interface), allowing efficient computation of dynamic and kinematic properties of a polydisperse suspension with more than 10(7) droplets Previous direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent collision, due to their numerical complexity, are typically limited to small Taylor microscale flow Reynolds numbers (similar to 100), or equivalently to a small physical domain size at a given flow dissipation rate in a turbulent cloud the difficulty lies in the necessity to treat simultaneously a field representation of the turbulent flow and free movement of particles We demonstrate here how the particle tracking and collision can be handled within the framework of a specific domain decomposition Our newly developed MPI code can be run on computers with distributed memory and as such can take full advantage of available computational resources We discuss scalability of five major computational tasks in our code collision detection, advancing particle position, fluid velocity interpolation at particle location, implementation of the periodic boundary condition, using up to 128 CPUs In most tested cases we achieved parallel efficiency above 100 % due to a reduction in effective memory usage Finally, our MPI results of pair statistics are validated against a previous OpenMP implementation

Next generation networks anticipate an increasing amount of network traffic from a wide range of emerging network applications. the features of packet flows (such as the minimal packet inter-arrival time and the number of packets with non-zero options in TCP headers) are used frequently in determining the traffic type and applying security policies. However, the extraction of flow features is difficult due to the increasing line rates, a broad range of network protocols, and a variety of complex flow features. In this paper, we leverage the multi-core processors to speed up the feature extraction process. We design an open source parallel software tool, aiming for processing network packet flows in real-time. We implement the software in four different designs including serial, parallel, pipelined and hybrid architectures. We evaluate the performance of the parallel software tool through measurement experiments. Our experimental results show that each method increases the packet processing throughput by 5-7% in comparison with the previous method. And finally the implementation based on the hybrid architecture improves the packet processing performance by 19.3% than the implementation based on the serial architecture.

GPU hardware architectures have evolved into a suitable platform for the hardware acceleration of complex computing tasks. Stereo vision is one such task where acceleration is desirable for robotic and automotive systems. Much research was invested in developing stereo vision algorithms with increased quality, but real-time implementations are still lacking. In this work we focus on creating a real-time dense stereo reconstruction system. We selected the Semi-global Matching method as the basis of our system due to its high quality and reduced computational complexity. the Census transform is selected as the matching metric because our results show that it can reduce the matching errors for traffic images compared to classical solutions. We also present two modifications to the original Semi-Global algorithm to improve the sub-pixel accuracy and the execution time. the system was implemented and evaluated on a current generation GPU with a running time of 19ms for image having the resolution 512×383.

Computational demanding public key cryptographic algorithms, such as Rivest-Shamir-Adlernan (RSA) and Elliptic Curve (EC) cryptosystems, are critically dependent on modular multiplication for their performance. Modular multiplication used in cryptography may be performed in two different algebraic structures, namely GF(N) and GF (2(n)), which normally require distinct hardware solutions for speeding up performance. For both fields, Montgomery multiplication is the most widely adopted solution, as it enables efficient hardware implementations, provided that a slightly modified definition of modular multiplication is adopted. In this paper we propose a novel unified architecture for parallel Montgomery multiplication supporting both GF(N) and GF(2(n)) finite field operations, which are critical for RSA ad ECC public key cryptosystems. the hardware scheme interleaves multiplication and modulo reduction. Furthermore, it relies on a modified Booth recoding scheme for the multiplicand and a radix-4 scheme for the modulus, enabling reduced time delays even for moderately large operand widths. In addition, we present a pipelined architecture based on the parallel blocks previously introduced, enabling very low clock counts and high throughput levels for long operands used in cryptographic applications. Experimental results, based on 0.18 mu m CMOS technology, prove the effectiveness of the proposed techniques, and outperform the best results previously presented in the technical literature.
