Following in the wake of the Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI) of the US Department of Energy, in the forthcoming years powerful new supercomputers will be brought into the market by the manufacturers participating in the high-performance computing race. Hence, the large-scale computing facilities in the key research centers and industrial plants world-wide will surpass the teraflops performance barrier, too. the parallelarchitectures will be further extended to hierarchically clustered parallel computers mainly based on commodity-chip processors and SMP nodes tying together possibly tens of thousands of processing elements. In addition, heterogeneous computing and metacomputing will determine future large-scale computing by interconnecting supercomputers of diverse architectures as giant supercomputer complexes. these developments will challenge not only system reliability, availability and serviceability to novel levels, but also interactivity of concurrent algorithms and, in particular, adaptivity, accuracy and stability of parallel numerical methods.

this paper describes the realization of a parallel version of the k/h-means clustering algorithm. this is one of the basic algorithms used in a wide range of data mining tasks. We show how a database can be distributed and how the algorithm can be applied to this distributed database. the tests conducted on a network of 32 PCs showed for large data sets a nearly ideal speedup.

However, unbalanced computational load or idle times due to tasks that are blocked in I/O or waiting on results from other tasks can cause significant performance problems. PC clusters running Windows NT have been investigated as a low-cost alternative to parallel computers. One important reason why NT clusters are not broadly accepted yet is the lack of powerful development environments, which are a crucial success factor for software development projects. this paper presents the new Windows NT version of TRAPPER, an integrated development and visualization environment for parallel systems. Emphasis is put on a new component called the project workspace tool. Project workspaces enable user-friendly interaction with all components and settings required for the development of a parallel application. they automate many repetitive tasks that are typical to parallel system development.
