Networks of workstations (NOWs) are cost-effective alternatives to multiprocessor systems. Recently, NOWs have been proposed for parallel query processing. Idle CPU cycles of workstations in a NOW-based system can be used to process database query operations. In this paper Mle report performance of the hierarchical architecture for parallel query processing on a NOW: We have implemented the hierarchical architecture using PVM on a Pentium-based NOW. the experimental results reported here suggest that the hierarchical architecture is successful in achieving good scaleups and speedups indicating that the idle processor cycles are effectively used for query processing. Hierarchical system can also handle both light and heavy workloads in a load sharing fashion. Our results also suggest that the performance is sensitive to the minimum fragmentation size (chunk size) for partial operations and the structure of queries.

Jitney is a 20 channel (500Mb/s/ch) optical bus packaged in a plastic molded lead frame with a 'snap together' plastic optical coupler the cables use plastic ferrules and large core fiber Manufacturing cost estimates are competitive with copper;and significantly under $100/Gbit/sec, for full duplex, Gigabyte/sec operation. this paper describes a parallel model for a distributed memory architecture of a non traditional evolutionary computation method, which integrates constraint propagation and evolution programs. this integration provides a problem-independent optimisation strategy for large scale constrained combinatorial problems over finite integer domains. We have adopted a global parallelisation approach which preserves the properties, behaviour, and theoretical studies of the sequential algorithm. Moreover, high speedup is achieved since genetic operators are coarse-grained, as they perform a search in a discrete space carrying out constraint propagation. A global parallelisation implies a single population but, as we focus on distributed memory architectures, the single virtual population is physically distributed among the processors. Selection and mating consider all the individuals in the population, but the application of genetic operators is performed in parallel. the implementation of the model has been tested on a GRAY T3E multiprocessor using two complex constrained optimisation problems. Experiments have proved the efficiency of this approach since linear speedups have been obtained.

the aim of this work is to propose a simple and efficient mechanism to deal withthe problem of executing sequential code in a pure dataflow machine. Our results is obtained with a simulator of Wolf [4] architecture. the implemented mechanism improved the architecture performance when executing sequential code and we expect that this improvement could be better if we use some heuristics to deal with some special groups of instructions such as branch operations. Further research will show us if this is true.

Continuing increases in efficiency, uniformity, and yield for low-threshold dialectrically Apertured Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) suggest that this new generation of sources may be ready for insertion into practical parallel interconnect systems. this paper will review the recent evolution of these devices, pointing out key enabling advances and potential roadblocks yet to be addressed Included will be advances that have led to record low optical losses as well as record high wall-plug efficiency at powers of a few hundred microwatts, desirable for massively parallel optical interconnects. the use of engineered oxide apertures is a key element in these cases. Experimental results will also include recent free-space and WDM fiber interconnects. Remaining issues to be addressed include some sort of lateral carrier confinement, such as a buried-heterostructure, to reduce carrier losses as devices are scaled to small lateral dimensions.
