Retinopathy is a retinal vascular disease caused by abnormal blood flow that damages the retina and it accounts for 5% of blindness worldwide. there are different causes of Retinopathy as retinopathy of prematurity, diabetic retinopathy and hypertensive retinopathy;this paper mainly focuses on preprocessing techniques employed for the detection of diabetic retinopathy. In this work, literatures reporting different methods for automated diabetic retinopathy detection in color images of retina are analyzed for their strength and shortcoming. Extensive techniques for retinal image screening have been published so far thus this paper presents the evaluation of these methods on a common database of image screening. Different image pre-processing techniques are implemented on fundus images and their performance is compared using performance metrics like mean square error, peak signal to noise ratio and root mean square error. Pre-processing steps used in this work can also be applied to other images of interest to identify and recognize the objects in an image.

Recent research works have shown that applying parallelization to request processing in Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) can bring significant performance improvement. Based on partitioned service state, parallelism is introduced to both agreement and execution to address performance and scalability limitations caused by the global total order of all requests. However, in case of inefficient state partitioning, expensive synchronization among partitions is expected, which leads to a considerable performance loss. To improve the efficiency of parallel processing, we present Dynamic State Partitioning (DYPART), a framework that maps service state into multiple partitions and periodically reconfigures the partitions for different usage patterns. DYPART relies on the knowledge about relations between the state objects for partitioning, which is obtained by collecting request dependencies. It utilizes a high-performance graph partitioning algorithm to ensure that the resulting state partitions can achieve both workload balance and low synchronization among partitions. Our evaluation of a key-value store shows that compared to a random partitioning, DYPART can improve the performance by at least 40%.

the success of Deep Learning (DL) algorithms in computer vision tasks have created an on-going demand of dedicated hardware architectures that could keep up with the their required computation and memory complexities. this task is particularly challenging when embedded smart camera platforms have constrained resources such as power consumption, processing Element (PE) and communication. this article describes a heterogeneous system embedding an FPGA and a GPU for executing CNN inference for computer vision applications. the built system addresses some challenges of embedded CNN such as task and data partitioning, and workload balancing. the selected heterogeneous platform embeds an Nvidia® Jetson TX2 for the CPU-GPU side and an Intel Altera® Cyclone10GX for the FPGA side interconnected by PCIe Gen2 with a MIPI-CSI camera for prototyping. this test environment will be used as a support for future work on a methodology for optimized model partitioning.

Stencil computation is one of the most important kernels in many application domains such as image processing, solving partial differential equations, and cellular automata. Many of the stencil kernels are complex, usually consist of multiple stages or iterations, and are often computation-bounded. Such kernels are often offloaded to FPGAs to take advantages of the efficiency of dedicated hardware. However, implementing such complex kernels efficiently is not trivial, due to complicated data dependencies, difficulties of programming FPGAs with RTL, as well as large design space. In this paper we present SODA, an automated framework for implementing Stencil algorithms with Optimized Dataflow Architecture on FPGAs. the SODA microarchitecture minimizes the on-chip reuse buffer size required by full data reuse and provides flexible and scalable fine-grained parallelism. the SODA automation framework takes high-level user input and generates efficient, high-frequency dataflow implementation. this significantly reduces the difficulty of programming FPGAs efficiently for stencil algorithms. the SODA design-space exploration framework models the resource constraints and searches for the performance-optimized configuration with accurate models for post-synthesis resource utilization and on-board execution throughput. Experimental results from on-board execution using a wide range of benchmarks show up to 3.28x speed up over 24-thread CPU and our fully automated framework achieves better performance compared with manually designed state-of-the-art FPGA accelerators.

the task of coreference resolution has attracted a great deal of attention in the literature due to its importance in deep language understanding, and its potential as a subtask in a variety of complex natural language processing problems. We experiment with different methods for generating training data and architectures for extracting meaningful mention representations. Coreference resolution in lesser-resourced languages is challenging, and transfer learning is a promising technique to overcome the comparatively smaller available corpora. We explore direct transfer learning from Spanish to Portuguese. We present state-of-the-art systems on both Spanish and Portuguese, and report promising results in a cross-language setting.

Simulation models are widely used to study various systems. However, many of them lack of accuracy without incorporating real time data from the system under study. Particle filters can be used to assimilate real time data into dynamic systems to improve state inferences. parallel/distributed particle filters were introduced by deploying particles among multiple processing units (PUs) to improve the performance. In parallel/distributed particle filters, the resampling process needs particle exchanging among PUs, which affects the speedup factor of parallel computing. therefore, efficient particle routing policies are necessary to improve the performance. In this paper, we analyze the performance of parallel/distributed particle filters with three different particle routing policies. the analysis is able to provide the guidelines in optimizing the resampling strategies and applications. the simulation and experimental results showed the relationship between the speedup factor and system inherent complexity, the dimension of particle, and the number of PUs.

Breast cancer is a major root cause of death in most cancer affected women and every year millions of women are dying around the globe because of this deadly disease.. Now-a-days various image processing techniques are used to extract the features from mammogram image. Mammograms are X-ray images of the breast which are used to visualize the early sign of breast cancer. Oncologists are using various images processing technique for effective decisions making, by comparing the mammographic images. Microcalcifications are small calcium deposits that look like white specks on mammogram. these are usually not a result of cancer but if they appear in certain pattern and cluster together, can lead to early stage of cancer. Different image processing technique can be used for detecting these micro calcification. the aim of the paper is to detect the cancerous cells by the use of different existing image filter with their comparisons of output performance and the advantages of this method is future predictions of breast cancer. If the cancer cells are detected at early stage, many precious lives can be saved.

Set similarity join is a core operation for text data integration, cleaning, and mining. Most state-of-the-art solutions rely on inherently sequential, CPU-based algorithms. In this paper, we propose a parallel algorithm for the set similarity joins harnessing the power of GPU systems through filtering techniques and divide-and-conquer strategies that scale well with data size. Furthermore, we also present parallel algorithms for all data pre-processing phases. As a result, we have an end-to-end solution to the set similarity join problem, which receives input text data and outputs pairs of similar strings and is entirely executed on the GPU. Our experimental results on standard datasets show substantial speedups over the fastest algorithms in the literature. © Springer international Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has become the key technology in 5G communication. NOMA can achieve multi-user multiplexing in transmit power domain by allocating different power, which can effectively improve the spectral efficiency, but also causes the multiple access interference of the receiver signal. the parallel interference cancellation (PIC) technology is applied to NOMA system in order to solve the problem of high-delay and error propagation in the successive interference cancellation (SIC) algorithm. PIC can effectively compensate for the deficiency of SIC algorithm but it has high complexity. Combined with the advantages of SIC and PIC, a joint interference cancellation (JIC) method is proposed. the performance and complexity of the three algorithms are simulated and analyzed. the results show that JIC can effectively reduce the delay and improve the error propagation problem in the case of low complexity.
