Ensuring adequate security and privacy of health information is a moral and legal mandate of the twenty-first-century healthcare industry that is fast moving towards complete digitalization. As a consequence of increased threats to security of electronic health records, a genuine need for a robust and effective authentication and access control schemes has emerged. Since healthcare systems pose some unique security constraints, especially in case of access control, none of the extant off-the-shelf solutions is directly applicable. In this paper - recognizing the fact that authentication is an indispensable precursor to access control - we address both issues together by proposing a robust authentication scheme and a hybrid access control model for healthcare informatics. We explain the design and implementation of the proposed system, and discuss evaluation results that were found to successfully satisfy various security requirements of the healthcare domain.

Laparoscopic surgery and the market for its robotic devices keep growing since postoperative complications are fewer and patients recover quicker than conventional laparotomy wounds, even though robotic surgery is 5-6 times more expensive than traditional laparotomy. We are developing surgical robot system with minimally invasive robotic surgical tools. And to use those tools in surgery, the mechanism of system needs to be simple and durable to reduce the cost of robotic surgery. In this paper, we present some mechanisms for minimally invasive surgical robot tools that have simple structure, easy to manufacture and control.

this paper proposes a methodology for the real-time finger gesture following and control of mechatronic systems based on computer vision and machine learning techniques. the goal of this research is to develop a human-machine interface that could be able to control a mechatronic system by performing finger gestures in space or on a surface without the use of any kind of keyboard neither a joystick. the finger gestures will be continuously followed and directly mapped with commands of mechatronic systems such as start moving, stop moving, forward moving, backward moving etc. the proposed methodology relies on the finger gesture data acquisition, hand segmentation, fingertips localization/ identification, high-level feature extraction, early recognition and prediction using machine learning techniques and its integration into a mechatronic system. the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT robotics platform controlled by matlab software could be used in the proposed methodology.

To design compact and precise robotic devices for medical applications one of the most important initial steps is choosing suitable actuators. In typical situations there is a tradeoff between working volume and precision. this trade-off and decision making is more serious in micro scale operations like ophthalmic surgeries. this paper analyzes the surgeons' motion during vitreo-retinal operation under clinical circumstances. the tracking system comprises an electromagnetic system to capture the surgical tool motion in 6 DOF and a coupled camera to keep the procedure under observation for the purpose of data validation. the contribution of this paper is divided to two folds: first is the precise definition of working volume and trajectories during ophthalmic surgery for robotic design optimization. this data will be used to define the parameters of actuators such as velocity, precision and travel range in design phase and will also be utilized for validation of the robot motion in further steps. the second contribution of this paper is the experimental setup which is extendable for observation of other micromanipulation applications such as ear surgery or cell injection.

In this paper, we report the results from the psychological assessment conducted using a test battery composed of cognitive and social wellbeing tests and questionnaires performed by users and controls that participated in the AGNES project in Spain, Sweden and Greece at the beginning of the study and after the deployment of the first prototype. the project carries out novel technological interventions in an emerging area in ageing research. the main innovation is the integration of different technological components and social networking to provide a novel solution to the ageing population living at home. the motivation was based on relevant findings on the psychology of ageing and the need for technologies to support the ageing population. End-users have been heavily involved, providing design input, continuum evaluation and feedback. theproject focuses on improving the mental and physical wellbeing of elderly people living at home, who often suffer the effects of social and physical isolation including cognitive decline, low activity levels and poor mood states. the main results were that the users but not the control participants improved cognitive performance andthe feeling of being treated with respect, being independent, self-realization and greater achievement.

the Internet of things (IoT) many be thought of as the availability of physical objects, or devices, on the Internet [1]. Given such an arrangement it is possible to access sensor data and control actuators remotely. Furthermore such data may be combined with data from other sources - e.g. with data that is contained in the Web - or operated on by cloud based services to create applications far richer than can be provided by isolated embedded systems [2,3]. this is the vision of the Internet of things. We present a cloud-compatible open source controller and an extensible API, hereafter referred to as 'IoTCloud', which enables developers to create scalable high performance IoT and sensor-centric applications. the IoTCloud software is written in Java and built on popular open source packages such as Apache Active MQ [4] and JBoss Netty [5]. We present an overview of the IoT Cloud architecture and describe its developer API. Next we introduce the FutureGrid - a geographically distributed and heterogeneous cloud test-bed [6,7] - used in our experiments. Our preliminary results indicate that a distributed cloud infrastructure like the FutureGrid coupled with our flexible IoTCloud framework is an environment suitable for the study and development of IoT and sensor-centric applications. We also report on our initial study of certain measured characteristics of an IoTCloud application running on the FutureGrid. We conclude by inviting interested parties to use the IoTCloud to create their own IoT applications or contribute to its further development. © 2012 IEEE.

With the great increase of human industrial production and agricultural activity, the toxic effect of pollution source of water bodies is becoming more and more complicated, so the analysis of water biological toxicity has gradually become more necessary. Because of the inhibition of toxic material on the luminous intensity of the bacteria, this paper proposes an improvement of the internal structure and control methods of the on-line water biological toxicity analyzer based on luminous bacteria in the laboratory. the analyzer detects changes of luminous intensity of luminescent bacteria to analysis the biological toxicity of water quality caused by the heavy metals and other organic pollutants. the key improvements of the analyzer are as follows: Place a Hall switch on the sample container tray for the precise positioning of optical signal acquisition, to improve the accuracy of the test results. Install digital temperature sensors in the thermostat zone to acquire the environmental temperature, and send it to the microcontroller to maintain a constant temperature with the digital Proportion Integration Differentiation (PID) regulator. control the rotation angle by the stepper motor to improve the accuracy of the material sending and the test results. the mixing blades of the activated reactor can be connected with the stirring motor through the long axis to improve the accuracy of the testing sample solution. By the measures above, this design achieves the goal of improving the reliability and the accuracy of the analyzer, and realizes rapidly, accurately and on-line detect and analyze to the biological toxicity of water.

the most common image feature extraction algorithms such as SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) and SURF (Speeded Up Robust Feature) have been proven to be invariant to changes in rotation, scale and with restrictions to illumination and viewpoint changes. these algorithms generate descriptor vectors around keypoints in 2D images. Close descriptors suggest similar image patch. In case of mobile robotics applications it is important to achieve good viewpoint invariance and stability to detect landmarks and objects with high reliability. Improving viewpoint invariance for image feature detection increases the efficiency of SLAM algorithms. In this paper we present and evaluate a method to use additional data provided by range image sensors to supplement traditional feature extraction algorithms to improve viewpoint invariance. We present the method and results of computer simulation and also real world examples comparing the SURF (OpenSURF) with and without the improvement. An active structured light based range and intensity image sensor was used to acquire real world test images.

Ample research is conducted on ICT, automation and robotics in agriculture and related environmental issues. ICT and robotics innovations are rapidly emerging and have the ability to revolutionize future farming through their major impacts on productivity and profitability. Unfortunately human and financial resources and efforts are fragmented and limited. this led to the creation of the ICT-AGRI ERA-NET that provides a central structured framework. Its main objective is to strengthen and coordinate European research regarding ICT and robotics in agriculture. Besides the creation of the Meta Knowledge Base (MKB), a common European research agenda will be developed and common research calls are launched. the Meta Knowledge Base (http://***) is attempting to map all relevant research and development within the selected research area. To accomplish the mapping, two types of information are collected: research profiles and research postings. To organize the postings, a three-dimensional task technology oriented framework was designed. the results indicated that the three axes: task, technology and scope seemed insufficient to describe the whole research area. therefore, an improved framework was developed. By extending the task-technology oriented framework with a process-control information system, a useful framework was designed.
