the fin motion of the manta ray has been an attractive inspiration for biomimetic underwater robot propeller designs. Study shows that the fin of the manta ray generates undulations in both span and chord-wise directions, which is advantageous for speed and agility in swimming. Regarding the undulation generation, the chord-wise undulation (CWU) is relatively challenging to implement. In the existing batoid-inspired robots, the multi-fin-ray driven by individual actuators, like motors or other smart actuators, has been the most common design for the CWU implementation. In this paper, we tap into the viscosity induced motion sequencing for soft fluidic actuators (SFAs) to achieve CWU in a soft fin ray array (SFRA). the SFRA, assembled using eight bi-directional fiber-reinforced SFAs, is hydraulically driven and tested with eight different tubing connection plans for undulation characterization. the results show that the viscosity of water during the flow in the SFRA channel network successfully achieves the undulation along the fin rays with decaying oscillation amplitudes. SFAs with hydraulic actuation are favored candidates for underwater propellers, and this work provides a new solution to the SFA-based biomimetic underwater robot with manta ray like swimming mode.

the paper discusses the problem of the decision process of controlling the bio-prosthesis of the hand that is treated as the human intention recognition by means of the analysis of the electromyography (EMG) signals from the hand muscles. the number of movements, which is indispensable for the dexterity of the prosthesis, makes the recognition not entirely reliable. the approach presented herein includes three methods: the decision tree, neuron networks, and genetic algorithms in order to enhance the reliability of the EMG signal recognition. Simultaneously, the paper presents the software designed for the needs of the research and adapted to processing the EMG signals in compliance withthese methods.

the Hough transform is a powerful tool in image analysis, e.g. circle detection is a fundamental issue in image processing applications of industrial parts or tools. Because of its drawbacks, various modifications of the basic circle Hough transform (CHT) method have been suggested. this paper presents a modified method based on the basic CHT algorithm and using no trigonometric calculations in order to improve the computational performance of the voting process for a good accuracy and robustness of circle detection in a binary image. this paper also provides the errors analysis of the proposed method against the basic CHT method to illustrate that it can replace the basic CHT method for small values of the resolution Ε of the angle θ. It then compete the CORDIC algorithm when it is used in a hardware implementation.
