Recent studies report a growing demand for downtimeless evolution of distributed automation systems. this paper therefore first analyzes evolution approaches from the industry as well as from academic research pointing out benefits and drawbacks. the standard IEC 61499 is identified as promising basis for dynamic reconfiguration of control applications, but it lacks for an adequate engineering methodology. Finally the epsivCEDAC approach for structured evolution modeling is presented. therein a distributed evolution control application modeled in terms of IEC 61499 is used for transforming the control application from current to desired state without downtime. Further important issues are correctness of the evolution process and runtime error handling mechanisms.

the semantic loopholes of the standard IEC 61499 have been pointed out in different recent publications with focus on some details. this paper investigates especially on the execution models for composite function blocks and subapplications. Of course this is closely related to the execution of basic function blocks and function block networks. therefore, this work is based on general assumptions about these parts. the different possibilities concerning composite function blocks are described in detail and explained in a case study of a very simple example function block. For the sake of describing the relation to current runtime environments, three current implementations are used in the case study.

the standard IEC 61499 claims to be a standard for a distributed control environment consisting of a set of heterogeneous control devices from different vendors. Previous research work on the implementation of IEC 61499 pointed out so-called loopholes in the definitions of the standard resulting in different execution behaviour on different control devices. One of the key loopholes that have been identified is the lack of a definition for execution models of the device and the resource. With this work a step towards a more rigid definition of the execution semantics for IEC 61499 through the derivation of execution models for resources and devices.

As part of this research, software for multimodal biometric authentication using neural networks is developed to improve the efficiency of information system user authorization. the architectures of artificial neural networks, which are involved in the processes of recognizing a person by facial image and voice, are given. the internationally used databases (DataSet) of images and audio recordings for training of neural networks are considered. the process of training neural networks, the formed database of biometric personal data and the results obtained by the authors are described.

In this paper an off-line programming approach for welding robots is presented. the approach is based on the integration of a software tool for robot simulation and an user-friendly interface for automatic generation of the control program. the user can graphically arrange the components in a robotic work-cell and simulate the movements and operations of robotic arms before converting motions and operating sequences in controller-specific tasks. this methodology guarantees high level of flexibility of the robotic system when high variety of work-pieces needs to be welded. the approach has been implemented and tested in a real welding work-cell.

In this paper the realization of safe communication in an unsafe environment for safety-related applications in building automation and control systems is presented. the communication system used is based on the LON technology -widely used in automation applications (D. Loy et al., 2001). the requirements for the safe communication and for the network management and commissioning tools are described in the first part of this paper. the description of the hardware and software needed and the implementation of the software are the second part. At the end an outlook is made for the results after finishing the European research project SAFETYLON at the beginning of 2008.

Teleoperation is entering a new era. Despite still in use today in the nuclear industry, simple purely mechanical or robotic 6 degrees of freedom (DoF) master-slave systems equipped with bi-digital grippers on the slave side and simple handles on the master side are not able to answer the challenge of remote manipulation at scale. these historical remotely controlled robotic solutions, inherited from mechanical master slave systems developed decades ago for research activities performed in gloveboxes and hot cells, allow operators an efficient and safe access to dangerous materials at distance. they are adapted when the variety of the to-be-manipulated objects remains limited, especially when these objects can be adapted for remote manipulation. they are however no more sufficient when one has to handle a much higher quantity of much more diverse objects, as it is typically the case when processing nuclear waste accumulated in huge quantities over time and/or produced at the occasion of nuclear power plants’ dismantling operations. the quantity and diversity of nuclear waste require more efficient and versatile systems. To answer this challenge and increase the operators’ productivity, we developed a complete bimanual teleoperation setup able to perform remote dexterous manipulation tasks. this article describes the hardware and software architecture of this platform, which is notably composed of a novel dexterous master-slave system combining a tri-digital master glove and a remotely controlled three fingers gripper. Both make use of highly backdrivable actuators and transmissions, and the proposed coupling schemes allow intuitive control of various grasp types. As a result, the proposed setup enables dexterous and force-sensitive control, and it is well-suited for high fidelity force-reflection tele-presence. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Various advantages of blockchain include decentralisation, persistence, anonymity, and auditability. Numerous researchers are now interested in distributed control systems that facilitate coordinated and cooperative autonomy as a result of the rising market for robotics. the fields of distributed control and cooperative robotics have constantly faced unsolvable issues with safety and distributed communication. Blockchain innovation has recently been recognized in this setting as a viable technique to solve several of the above problems, including the recognition of malicious nodes, malfunction in process automation, non-compliance with the established standards and privacy protections, safety strikes on robotic, and lack of clarity in measuring performance and audits. this research aims to offer a pathway for newcomers to enter this study area by providing a comprehensive image of blockchain technology’s operating principle and important components in the terminology of management and robotics. Blockchain innovation holds out hope for a comprehensive resolution to this issue and offers a comprehensive review of the system in the form of tutorials. the importance of blockchain in various robotics application cases is then examined. the approaches for future study that can lead to breakthroughs and successful blockchain incorporation in the robotics industry are then highlighted.

Vision, as a key perceptional capability for cognitive systems relates to rather difficult problems -such as visual object recognition, representation, categorization, and scene understanding. State-of-the-art solutions, using object appearance based models, already reached certain maturity. they achieve excellent recognition performance and provide learning structures that are subsequently utilized for object recognition and tracking. However, in context of object topology understanding for cognitive tasks, these methods cannot be directly compared with human performance, because it is obvious that appearance based methods do not contribute to understanding of structures in 3D. Research findings from infant psychology and animal investigation give evidence for using hierarchical models of object representation, based on image primitives e.g. such as edges, corners, shading or homogeneity of object colors. It is the objective of this paper to present an approach based on both, findings from biological studies and cognitive science, as enablers for autonomous cognitive investigation of natural scenes and their understanding. We present the architecture of a compound cognitive framework and its first behavioral level with the implementation of a vision model of the mammalian striate visual cortex in five layers. the proposed implementation is exemplified with an object similar to the Necker cube.

Aiming at the traditional prediction methods of related parameters that affect water quality, they usually only consider the temporal characteristics of the related parameters of water quality and ignore the problem that water quality changes are multivariate related, A prediction method of spatiotemporal correlation water quality parameters based on automatic encoder(AE) dimensionality reduction and long and short time memory(LSTM) neural network is proposed. Firstly, considering that water quality parameter changes have obvious time characteristics, a time series prediction model of water quality parameters is established based on LSTM. Secondly, considering that the water quality changes have multiple correlations, the upstream water quality will also affect the downstream water quality. If all the water quality parameters of the upstream station are added to the prediction model, redundant features will reduce the accuracy of parameter prediction. therefore, the automatic encoder is used to reduce the dimensionality of the relevant parameters. Finally, the data set of Lang fang Water Quality Automatic Monitoring Station is applied to monitor the effectiveness of the method. By predicting the concentration of total phosphorus(TP) and total nitrogen(TN), the method is found to have better prediction accuracy and robustness.
