teaching programming is much more like teaching a craft skill than it is a purely theoretical subject. Hence an "apprenticeship" model, where apprentices learn by watching the master do, and then do themselves, and are criticised in their doing, is, we claim, more appropriate than the "lecturer/lecturee" model that universities implicitly adopt. Furthermore, there are generally many more apprentices than the master can personally supervise. Universities will therefore use various tutors, who should be regarded as the analogue of the guild-master's journeymen. However, how does one encourage this mindset in students who, for their other courses, are indeed lecturees? What are the implications for the journeymen?

In today's digital world, the use of diverse interconnected physical computer-based devices, typified by the Internet-of-things, has increased, leaving their internal functionalities hidden from people. In education, these hidden computational processes leave learners with a vagueness that obscures how these physical devices function and communicate in order to produce the high-level behaviours and actions they observe. the current approach to revealing these hidden worlds involves the use of debugging tools, visualisation, simulation, or augmented-reality views. Even when such advanced technologies are utilised, they fail to construct a meaningful view of the hidden worlds that relate to the learning context, leaving learners with formidable challenges to understanding the operation of these deep technologies. therefore, a pedagogical virtual machine (PVM) model was employed to evaluate the learning effectiveness of the proposed model. We presented the experimental evaluation of the PVM model with AR that concerned students learning to program a desk-based robot (which is used as an example of an embedded computer) and reveal the learning effectiveness of using PVM with AR compared to traditional engineering laboratory methods. Overall, the PVM with AR improved learning and teaching, as compared to traditional environments, and learners preferred the use of the PVM with AR system for doing similar activities.

According to a recent study, 30% of VMs in private cloud data centers are "comatose", in part because there is generally no strong incentive for their human owners to delete them at an appropriate time. these inactive VMs are still scheduled and executed on physical cloud resources, taking valuable access away from productive VMs. In an extreme, cloud infrastructure may deny legitimate requests for new VMs because capacity limits have been hit. It is not sufficient for cloud infrastructure to identify such inactive VMs by monitoring resource utilization (e.g., CPU utilization) - e.g., management processes (e.g. virus-scan, software update) on inactive VMs often consume high CPU and memory resources, and active VMs with lightweight jobs (e.g. text editing) show almost zero resource utilization. To properly detect and address such inactive VMs, we present iCSI: a cloud garbage VM collector to improve resource utilization and cost efficiency of enterprise data centers. iCSI includes three main components;a lightweight data collector, a VM identification model and a recommendation engine. the data collector periodically gathers primitive information from VMs. the identification model infers the purpose of a VM from the data collection and extracts the most relevant features associated with the purpose. the recommendation engine offers proper actions to end users i.e., suspending or resizing VMs. In this prototype phase, iCSI is deployed into multiple data centers in IBM and manages more than 750 production VMs. iCSI achieves 20% better accuracy (90%) in identifying active/inactive VMs compared with state-of-the-art methods. With recommendations to end users, our estimation results show that iCSI can improve internal cost efficiency with 23% and resource utilization more than 45%.

Flipped Classroom teaching model re-plans the learning time, reversing the process of knowledge transfer and knowledge internalization, creating a new communication mechanism conducive to the interaction between teachers and students, students and students, which has created a new possibility for the reform of classroom teaching in universities. the research about how to apply the flipped classroom teaching model for educational technology major carried out for four courses in fall semester of 2016. Nearly 100 students in three grades are involved in the questionnaire, formal and informal interview. Most of the students,84.95%,believe that the flipped classroom teaching model could facilitate the active learning and the student-centered teaching. the present study confirmed that the model benefits from screening appropriate teaching content, rational grouping, and the instructional design.

Web Technology is the development of the mechanism that allows two or more computer devices to communicate over a network. To understand such a complex system there is a need of experiential learning. Authors adopted an "Experiential learning" for teaching the web technology course. teaching with a hands-on session where the teacher explains the concepts with demonstration and students simultaneously practice and also modify the fields to observe the change. After the end of chapter the students learning is verified by giving the structured enquiry category assignments and are evaluated. At the end of delivery of course that is one month before the term end the collective learning is verified through the course project. Two course projects are carried out by the students as a team of two. One is the intranet project, where student understands how to connect and work in a local area network and the other is internet project, where student learns how to host a website globally. In both the projects students used LINUX platform with LAMP as a framework and developed web apps using HTML5, CSS 3, JQuery, PHP and SQL. the experiential learning enhanced the student's domain knowledge of Linux architecture, computer networks, and web and database servers applying in real time scenarios. Finally, we conclude such practical/programming oriented courses should be designed as hands-on lab course to attain the best outcomes.

this study investigates two different forms of examination in introductory Java programming courses: computer-based examination where the students are given one relatively large programming task only, and paper-/computer-based examination where the students are given a number of smaller questions to answer. the study focuses on identifying how well the two different examination forms reveal the students' practical skills and theoretical knowledge in relation to the intended learning outcomes specified in the course syllabus. Course syllabuses from 8 Swedish universities are examined and from these, 4 specified learning outcomes, each shared by at least 5 of the selected universities, are identified. these learning outcomes are then used to analyze the exams from two of the universities, one practicing the large programming task examination form, and the other is using the questions and answer examination form. For both examination forms, two course phases are analyzed with respect to the specified learning outcomes: 1) exam (e.g. what do the questions capture and how are they formulated), and 2) execution (e.g. what do the students answer and how well are the intended purposes of the questions fulfilled). the results illustrate the strengths and weaknesses with the two examination forms. the results can be used as decision support when selecting examination form and, furthermore, to improve both forms to attain more comprehensive examinations, with respect to the specified learning outcomes.

Mobile learning environments have the benefit of facilitating real time student learning and assessment. However, most of such learning environments only support static or traditional learning activities. In STEM disciplines, we need more active and engaging activities and mobile learning environments should be able to support such dynamic activities. By designing such learning environments to run completely on the cloud will limit its extensibility and will not accommodate interactive activities developed by anyone other than the developer of such learning environment. Instead, we argue that by incorporating cloud services in a traditional software architecture will allow the flexibility to develop and deploy interactive problem solving activities along with versatility that cloud computing brings. this paper presents Mobile Response System (MRS) that facilitates in-class interactive problem solving using mobile devices. MRS uses cloud services in the infrastructure to minimize instructor's workload, gives students transparent access, and makes the system failsafe alongside providing extensibility to any discipline.

e-Yantra conducts an annual online competition, e-Yantra Robotics Competition (eYRC) which incorporates a Project-Based learning (PBL) methodology to train students to implement a robotics project in a step-by-step manner over a five month period. the competition is designed to provide all the resources - robot, accessories, and a project - to each participating team to make the competition accessible to students from the remotest parts of India. Every year the goal is to increase the number of participating teams selected through an online selection test. Even though multiple teams from a college qualify, we restrict the number of teams from a college to the number of unique "themes" - projects abstracted into rulebooks - assigned in the competition. In eYRC-2013, 72 teams (out of 232 teams) who had qualified through the selection test could not be included in the competition, as we had only 5 unique themes. In 2014, we started a parallel competition, eYRC+ Pilot to include all the qualifying teams. In this paper we describe the methodology used in this competition where we experimented with a theme involving an advanced topic - Image Processing - such that we could assign the same theme to more number of teams. Our analysis of performance of teams show that contrary to our hypothesis, the learning outcomes of teams in the various tasks assigned in the competition are comparable to that of teams participated in the eYRC themes. Analyzing the effectiveness of the competition in imparting PBL, based on feedback received from the teams, we find that eYRC+ is as effective as eYRC. We present our analysis and how we have applied it in the current edition of the competition eYRC-2015.

Students' attitudes towards Science, Technology, engineering and Math (STEM) has been a topic of enduring interest in the field of STEM education over the past decade - but why? After all, there is no sense in which people are concerned about students' attitudes towards the learning of English or history. So what drives the interest in these topics? Previous research has suggested a relationship between teachers' and students' attitudes towards a subject area. In order to increase student representation in STEM, we need teachers who have positive attitudes and can provide role models to encourage their students to pursue STEM careers. In this paper we argue that in order to engage students' interest in the technical career paths, we must start with inspiring and training teachers to instill such interest in their students at early age. We present our experiences and outcomes from a teacher training program. through the training, we were able to help teachers explore ways to incorporate programming into their curriculum, gain STEM career awareness and develop an understanding of importance of soft skills in STEM. the results show that teachers were able to gain confidence in incorporating their subject matter into Scratch-based classroom activities and teaching this material in a classroom setting and gain a better understanding of careers in STEM.

this paper considers the role of cooperative learning and the benefits and drawbacks that are attached with using this strategy in the classroom. Consideration will be given to this strategy being used in an ESL classroom. In summary, does this strategy belong in classrooms? teaching methods are constantly changing or evolving and, with new and improved methods improving the way we teach, there is a phenomenon that is enriching ESL classrooms by leaps and bounds;cooperative learning. this paper will define what cooperative learning is, examine both advantages and disadvantages of it, and how it can be implemented in the classroom.
