the orbits of shaft centerline are pieces of indispensable information for the rotating machinery fault diagnosis. the shape of orbits of shaft centerline reflects the working state of rotating machinery since each shape corresponds to a special fault type. thus, shaft orbit recognition plays an important role in the fault diagnosis. An automatic orbit patternrecognition method is proposed in this paper. the application of neural network is helpful to identify the orbits of shaft centreline. An effort has been made to study the patternrecognition ability of RBF and ANN for fault detection without employing any pre-processing technique. Random noise has also been mixed to study the robustness of the neural network models. It is found that the neural network model has a strong capability in patternrecognition for fault diagnosis with high precision. this paper presents a comparison between multilayer perceptron neural network (MLP NN) and Radial basis feed-forward neural network (RBF NN) techniques for identifying the shape of orbits of shaft centerline for detection of fault in an induction motor.

A method of patternrecognition of tool wear based on Discrete Hidden Markov Models (DHMM) is proposed to monitor tool wear and to predict tool failure. At the first FFT features are extracted from the vibration signal and cutting force in culling process, then FFT vectors are presorted and coded into code book of integer numbers by SOM, and these code books are introduced to DHMM for machine learning to, build up 3-HMMs for different tool wear stage. And then, pattern is recognised by using maximum probability. Finally the results of tool wear recognition and failure prediction experiments were presented and shown that the method proposed is effective.

An integrated automatic target recognition processor utilizing a feature extraction wavelet preprocessor and a patternrecognition neuroprocessor is introduced. Feature extraction of orientation and scale information using a Morlet wavelet is introduced. this feature extraction wavelet preprocessor is used for pre-attentive vision such that the orientation, scale, and location feature are effectively extracted. this wavelet preprocessor will enable the neuroprocessor to dynamically focus its vision on incoming targets based on their known features. this will result in higher discrimination and lower false alarm rate. the theoretical analysis of the orientation and scale selectivity using a Morlet wavelet is provided. Experimental demonstrations of wavelet preprocessing for feature extraction are also provided.
