In this contribution, initial results of a research project on modelling and simulation as a service (MSaaS) within the context of optimal operation of distribution grids by exploiting flexibility are summarized. Based on a brief description of service-oriented architecture (SOA), definitions and key aspects of MSaaS as well as open conceptual and technical challenges are outlined. Some specific aspects and challenges are then related to a possible application: a service that predicts the flexibility that a power-to-heat system can offer is implemented as an instance of MSaaS. the calculations are based on the current state of the system and a model defined in the equation-based, object-oriented language Modelica, as well as historical data when available. thereby, an accurate and reliable representation of the flexiblity becomes available that facilitates its use for system balancing, energy market participation and grid operations. this functionality is exposed through a representational state transfer (REST)-based service interface, designed to allow for the straightforward integration with existing systems and other virtual resources. the service architecture and initial results of the implementation are described. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provide superior visuals that might be suitable for complicated surgical procedures in complex parts of the human body like brain and heart. Brain tumor removal is one of the trickiest surgical procedures and the pituitary tumor is one of the most common type of intracranial tumors. In this paper, we present an MRI compatible robotic system for pituitary tumor removal via trans-nasal access to the surgical site. the robotic system is designed to operate in a Siemens® 3T MRI scanner. A 5mm diameter and 6-DOF design specific manipulator is developed to access the pituitary glands and remove the tumor using the commercially available tools. the actuation system is designed to fit inside the MRI bore and operate just above the nasal entry point. the manipulator is designed to work in a 20×20mm workspace of the pituitary gland and this workspace is validated by experiments. the presented robotic system is expected to decrease the complexity by accessing the surgical site through the nasal cavity and improve the quality of tumor removal by providing better image quality under MRI guidance.

the advancements and developments in the field of innovative and creative thinking have played a pivotal role in kick-starting a whole new phase of technology - Internet of things (IoT). A lot of research is being done in the line of robotics and artificial intelligence, all of which has helped us think of a very effective and economical means of reducing manual labor in our day to day activities. We found our inspiration in a supermarket. Moving shopping carts manually can sometimes become too tedious to control, especially for the elderly and physically disabled. the objective of our work was to solve a major problem of existing shopping carts, which is that they rely on manual labor to move. Our cart uses the principles of image processing to map itself to one particular user using a pattern tag and follows the user based on single object tracking and the distance sensed by ultrasonic sensors interfaced with a Raspberry Pi.

the continuous digitization requires organizations to improve the automation of their business processes. Among others, this has lead to an increased interest in Robotic Process automation (RPA). RPA solutions emerge in the form of software that automatically executes repetitive and routine tasks. While the benefits of RPA on cost savings and other relevant performance indicators have been demonstrated in different contexts, one of the key challenges for RPA endeavors is to effectively identify processes and tasks that are suitable for automation. Textual process descriptions, such as work instructions, provide rich and important insights about this matter. However, organizations often maintain hundreds or even thousands of them, which makes a manual analysis unfeasible for larger organizations. Recognizing the large manual effort required to determine the current degree of automation in an organization's business processes, we use this paper to propose an approach that is able to automatically do so. More specifically, we leverage supervised machine learning to automatically identify whether a task described in a textual process description is manual, an interaction of a human with an information system or automated. An evaluation with a set of 424 activities from a total of 47 textual process descriptions demonstrates that our approach produces satisfactory results.

To have a significant and fair competition an adequate scoring system is necessary. Different scoring systems exist, each one directly related to the nature and goals of the competition, e.g. student/educational, focused on benchmarking, Grand Challenge style, etc. However, the design of such systems is not an easy task. It is mandatory to design approaches which enable the judges to score teams in a reasonable time after the end of their performance. Scoring systems cannot be therefore extremely complex. On the other hand, it is crucial to have a judging system for teams which provides a meaningful and fair performance evaluation of what the teams achieved in the field. In this paper, several approaches to scoring are presented and compared. Our focus is on search and rescue competitions. Each approach is critically analysed and its features comparatively discussed. this analysis is beneficial to provide an overview of scoring systems tailored to different kinds of competitions. the reported examples can be used as building blocks to improve existing scoring systems or to design new approaches. © 2018 IEEE.

this paper addresses the problem of coordination of a fleet of mobile robots – the problem of finding an optimal set of collision-free trajectories for individual robots in the fleet. Many approaches have been introduced during last decades, but a minority of them is practically applicable, i.e. fast, producing near-optimal solutions, and complete. We propose a novel probabilistic approach based on the Rapidly Exploring Random Tree algorithm (RRT) by significantly improving its multi-robot variant for discrete environments. the presented experimental results show that the proposed approach is fast enough to solve problems with tens of robots in seconds. Although the solutions generated by the approach are slightly worse than one of the best state-of-the-art algorithms presented in (ter Mors et al., 2010), it solves problems where ter Mors’s algorithm fails. Teaching industrial automation is a complex mission. the classical approach is based on lectures and laboratories assisted by teachers. Nevertheless, teaching industrial automation is not easy because this multidisciplinary area requires knowledge in control, energy, electronics, robotics and computer engineering, among others. In this way, this paper presents an approach to teach Industrial automation based on a self-learning strategy. Instead of using only the classical approach where they use didactic back boxes with a particular system, students must also develop a research work and a didactic automation prototype. Since the approach is based in the autonomy and self-learning, the evaluation of this methodology indicates that students increase the interest about industrial automation and clarify important aspects of assembly, commissioning, parameterization and programming of electric and electronic devices. Additionally, this methodology seems to increase their self-confidence, apart from the necessary background to face the challenge of working in the real world. the feedback from employers is also very satisfactory.

Human trust and Situation Awareness (SA) are safety critical components of highly automated systems. May it be an autonomous surgical robot or a self-driving car, independent decision making of the system based on complex, multi-sensory data will surly lead to some wrong conclusions and hazardous outcome. the aim of the development community is to establish processes and metrics for ensuring the safety of such systems. Safety begins at the development level, where new guidelines and requirements are being established to support manufacturers in transparency of development and production, leading to better accountability. New models define the Levels of Autonomy for such systems, linking the engineering functions to hazards and essential performance criteria [1]. Due to the nature of the novel functionalities, users are required to understand the limitations of these systems, and the role of the humans driver can be critical in such systems. Soon enough, fully automated vehicles (SAE Level 5) will take the complete responsibility off of the driver, but partially and highly automated systems (L3-4) may require human intervention in emergency situations or in driving scenarios outside the operation domain (ODD). the transition between automated and manual driving is an understudied, yet safety critical process. When the driver has to take back control from the automated system, a handover situation occurs. the request for initiation is carried out at the time instant takeover, and the time between the request signal and the actual retake of human control is called the takeover time [2]. the efficiency of hand over processes largely depends on the environmental conditions and the human's perception capabilities, modeled by SA, i.e., the dynamic understanding of the scene and possible actions to take.
