the relations between linear system theory and mathematical morphology are mainly understood on a pure convolution/dilation level. A formal connection on the level of differential or pseudo-differential equations is still missing. In our paper we close this gap. We establish the sought relation by means of infinitesimal generators, exploring essential properties of the slope and a modified Cramér transform. As an application of our general theory, we derive the morphological counterparts of relativistic scale-spaces and of α-scale-spaces for α ∈ [1/2, ∞). Our findings are illustrated by experiments. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

We present an improved model and theory for time-causal and time-recursive spatio-temporal receptive fields, obtained by a combination of Gaussian receptive fields over the spatial domain and first-order integrators or equivalently truncated exponential filters coupled in cascade over the temporal domain. Compared to previous spatio-temporal scale-space formulations in terms of non-enhancement of local extrema or scale invariance, these receptive fields are based on different scale-space axiomatics over time by ensuring non-creation of new local extrema or zero-crossings with increasing temporal scale. Specifically, extensions are presented about parameterizing the intermediate temporal scale levels, analysing the resulting temporal dynamics and transferring the theory to a discrete implementation in terms of recursive filters over time. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

the aim of this paper is to develop the theory, and to propose an algorithm, for morphological processing of images painted on point clouds, viewed as a length metric measure space (X, d, μ). In order to extend morphological operators to process point cloud supported images, one needs to define dilation and erosion as semigroup operators on (X, d). that corresponds to a supremal convolution (and infimal convolution) using admissible structuring function on (X, d). From a more theoretical perspective, we introduce the notion of abstract structuring functions formulated on length metric Maslov idempotent measurable spaces, which is the appropriate setting for (X, d). In practice, computation of Maslov structuring function is approached by a random walks framework to estimate heat kernel on (X, d, μ), followed by the logarithmic trick. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Many recent methods for perspective shape from shading (SfS) are based on formulations in terms of partial differential equations (PDEs). However, while the quality of such methods steadily improves, their lacking robustness is still an open issue. In this context, variational methods seem to be a promising alternative, since they allow to incorporate smoothness assumptions that have proven to be useful formany other tasks in computer vision. Surprisingly, however, suchmethods have hardly been considered for perspective SfS so far. In our article we address this problem and develop a novel variational model for this task. By combining building blocks of recent PDE-based methods such as a Lambertian reflectance model and camera-centred illumination with a discontinuitypreserving second-order smoothness term, we obtain a variational method for perspective SfS that offers by construction an improved degree of robustness compared to existing PDE-based approaches. Our experiments confirm the success of our strategy. they show that embedding the assumptions of PDE-based approaches into a variational model with a suitable smoothness term can be very beneficial – in particular in scenarios with noise or partially missing information. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

We tackle the problem of perspective 3D-reconstruction of Lambertian surfaces through photometric stereo, in the presence of outliers to Lambert’s law, depth discontinuities, and unknown spatiallyvarying lightings. To this purpose, we introduce a robust L1-TV variational formulation of the recovery problem where the shape itself is the main unknown, which naturally enforces integrability and permits to avoid integrating the normal field. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Color image enhancement is a challenging task in digital imaging with many applications. this paper contributes to image enhancement methods. We propose a new variational model for color improvement in the RGB space based on a desired target intensity image. Our model improves the visual quality of the color image while it preserves the range and takes the hue of the original, badly exposed image into account without amplifying its color artifacts. To approximate the hue of the original image we use the fact that affine transforms are hue preserving. To cope with the noise in the color channels we design a particular coupled TV regularization term. Since the target intensity of the image is unaltered our model respects important image structures. Numerical results demonstrate the very good performance of our method. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Bézier curves are a widespread tool for the design of curves in Euclidian space. this paper generalizes the notion of Bézier curves to the infinite-dimensional space of images. To this end the space of images is equipped with a Riemannian metric which measures the cost of image transport and intensity variation in the sense of the metamorphosis model [MY01]. Bézier curves are then computed via the Riemannian version of de Casteljau’s algorithm, which is based on a hierarchical scheme of convex combination along geodesic curves. Geodesics are approximated using a variational discretization of the Riemannian path energy. this leads to a generalized de Casteljau method to compute suitable discrete Bézier curves in image space. Selected test cases demonstrate qualitative properties of the approach. Furthermore, a Bézier approach for the modulation of face interpolation and shape animation via image sketches is presented. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

In this paper we consider the problem of estimating depth maps from multiple views within a variational framework. Previous work has demonstrated that multiple views improve the depth reconstruction, and that higher order regularisers model a good prior for typical realworld 3D scenes. We build on these findings and stress an important aspect that has not been considered in variational multiview depth estimation so far: We investigate several parameterisations of the unknown depth. this allows us to show, both analytically and experimentally, that directly working with depth values introduces an undesirable bias. As a remedy, we reveal that an inverse depth parameterisation is generally preferable. Our analysis clearly points out its benefits w.r.t. the data and the smoothness term. We verify these theoretical findings by means of experiments. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

We exploit recent progress on globally optimal MAP inference by integer programming and perturbation-based approximations of the log-partition function. this enables to locally represent uncertainty of image partitions by approximate marginal distributions in a mathematically substantiated way, and to rectify local data term cues so as to close contours and to obtain valid partitions. Our approach works for any graphically represented problem instance of correlation clustering, which is demonstrated by an additional social network example. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

In this work, we propose a novel way for performing operations of mathematical morphology on color images. To this end, we convert pixelwise the rgb-values into symmetric 2 × 2 matrices. the new color space can be interpreted geometrically as a biconal color space structure. Motivated by the formulation of the fundamental morphological operations dilation and erosion in terms of partial differential equations (PDEs), we show how to define finite difference schemes making use of the matrix field formulation. the computation of a pseudo supremum and a pseudo infimum of three color matrices is a crucial step for setting up advanced PDE-based methods. We show that this can be achieved for our goal by an algebraic technique. We investigate our approach by dedicated experiments and confirm useful properties of the new PDE-based color morphology operations. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.
