Digital transformation in manufacturing necessitates the integration of advanced fields such as robotics, the Internet of things (IoT), and data science. the latter two, in particular, introduce a unique set of challenges related to data acquisition and processing, especially for emerging manufacturing sectors that lack substantial data volumes for analytical software. this paper specifically addresses the challenges associated with limited data within the context of precision poultry farming. We begin by identifying the specific challenges encountered during the development of a smart poultry management software system. Subsequently, we propose potential solutions for each identified challenge. the outcome of this study is a comprehensive algorithm for data processing that encapsulates these proposed solutions, offering a practical approach to overcoming data limitations in precision poultry farming.

For large-scale processes as implemented in organizations that develop software in regulated domains, comprehensive software process models are implemented, e.g., for compliance requirements. Creating and evolving such processes is demanding and requires software engineers having substantial modeling skills to create consistent and certifiable processes. While teaching process engineering to students, we observed issues in providing and explaining models. In this paper, we present an exploratory study in which we aim to shed light on the challenges students face when it comes to modeling. Our findings show that students are capable of doing basic modeling tasks, yet, fail in utilizing models correctly. We conclude that the required skills, notably abstraction and solution development, are underdeveloped due to missing practice and routine. Since modeling is key to many softwareengineering disciplines, we advocate for intensifying modeling activities in teaching.

Education in softwareengineering is a must in all computer science courses. At the Institute for software Technology, we are responsible for all teaching in this area. For many years we have developed and continuously refined a softwaredevelopment project course to serve these topics. the COVID-19 pandemic had a particular impact on our project course and the way we taught during that time. We describe how we adapted the course to these new conditions. In particular, we used an automated program assessment system that helped us keep the difficulty of all assignments constant for the different student teams while maintaining the motivation of the individual students on each team. In this paper, we demonstrate that our approach was robust even in an emergency remote teaching (ERT) environment, is based on a continuous improvement process, feedback evaluation, and process adaptation, and will continue at an improved level in the post-corona era. Students report that the course had been fun.

Diversity is becoming an increasingly relevant topic in softwareengineering. A higher diversity rate in professional software teams has been shown to positively influence communication, innovation, and performance. Understanding whether similar effects exist in softwaredevelopment teams at an educational level would be important to identify potential challenges and opportunities that might affect students at later professional stages. therefore, in this paper we investigate the impact of diversity on key teamwork skills such as communication, collaboration, and productivity in student softwaredevelopment teams. In particular, we conducted several surveys on project work progress throughout an introductory softwareengineering course with students and their tutors regarding these teamwork metrics. We investigate how the self-assessments and the project outcomes relate to seven aspects of diversity, and find correlations between teamwork satisfaction and team diversity. We see deteriorations in certain teamwork metrics over the project timeline-independently of the team diversity. Our findings suggest that the impact of diversity on student teams may be more complex than on professional teams: diversity minorities in teams may feel frustrated more easily. Consequently, it is important to ensure that softwaredevelopment courses maintain motivation and decrease possible frustrations regarding teamwork.
