Nowadays, an increasing number of people with stroke are suffering considerably from a loss of physical mobility. Various traditional interventions have been developed to restore survivors' normal motor function following a stroke, but their effects are considerably limited. Many of these techniques require physical therapist's observation, specifically designed preparatory exercises and direct control of the lower limbs' position. therefore, we propose a novel automatic gait training system for gait rehabilitation of hemiparetic patients. It integrates a split belt treadmill with a functional electrical stimulation (FES) device, which is used to improve gait quality by delivering electrical stimuli to the muscles. the delivery of the stimulus from the FES device is triggered automatically during gait cycle. As subjects walk on the separated treadmill, the gait phases are estimated by an algorithm that observes variation in the current values of the treadmill motors. Finally, we have preliminarily tested the feasibility of the proposed method through experiments on simulated hemiparetic subjects, by comparing with experimental results using force plates.

We propose a new heel-contact toe-off walking model based on the Linear Inverted Pendulum (LIP) model, which due to the linearity and the ease of manipulation of the equations, could be considered to be advantageous for a future online implementation for the generation of walking patterns. this new model is based on the so called functional rockers of the foot (heel, ankle and forefoot rockers), each of which are modeled as an inverted pendulum, changing the ground contact point position of the inverted pendulums for each rocker. We focus on the motion of the Center of Mass (CoM) in the sagittal plane, as it is the plane on which the rockers take place, but also generate the motions on the frontal plane. the model proved to work for constant velocity, accelerating and decelerating gaits, and the effects of the change of pivot point during heel-contact toe-off could be corroborated in the Zero Moment Point (ZMP) graphs. the implementation of this model could improve the human likeness of the motions, as well as the stability of the locomotion.

the aim of this tutorial is to give a concise, but nonetheless not too narrow, overview of definitions and results pertaining centrally to Petri net structure theory. the Petri net model considered in these notes are the classical place/transition nets, as they have been defined in the First advanced Course held in 1979 and originate back to the late Sixties. Structure theory asks what behavioural properties of a Petri net can be derived from its structural properties. Other aspects of Petri nets are neglected to a large extent in the present notes, such as various extensions and generalisations of central notions and results, as well as almost all algorithmic and complexity-theoretic consequences that accompany the structure-theoretic results. Because full proofs can easily be retrieved from the literature, they are not given, unless they are small and perhaps somewhat characteristic for Petri net oriented reasoning. Proof ideas are often sketched, however, and the sharpness of various results is accentuated by means of examples and counterexamples. A list for further reading is also provided. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

Model Driven Engineering proposes the use of models as the main development artifacts. this methodology involves generating code from models and then perhaps adding some details to the generated code. Frequently, it is required to also reverse-engineer code to generate models. Despite the wide acceptance of modeling benefits, the use of Model Driven Engineering practices remains limited. We present model oriented programming as a new paradigm to reduce the ever-present tension between model-centric and code-centric development styles. the core of this approach is to add UML abstractions such as associations and state machines directly into a high-level programming language code. In this approach, model diagrams become just another abstract view of the code. the need for reverse engineering is eliminated, since everything in the diagram is represented directly in the code. Model orientation is illustrated using Umple, a working model oriented programming platform. A functional layer of an airline reservation system is presented as a case study.

the binocular disparity is the prime of forming stereopsis. the researches were not focused on basic visual functional areas affecting stereoscopic perception induced by binocular disparity. In this paper, ERP technology was used to study the regulatory region in cerebral cortex which relates to stereoscopic perception induced by binocular disparity. We chose eight subjects to conduct the experiment by using images with different binocular disparities, and we found the stereoscopic perception resulted from binocular disparity evoked N2 wave on all of occipital lobe with large amplitude at 180ms. In addition, the amplitudes of N2 waves in the O channels were lower than those of other channels. It means the regulation of stereoscopic perception induced by binocular disparity needs basic and advanced visual functional areas work together. Meanwhile, it also means the principle areas are the advanced visual functional areas. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, a bio-inspired scaffold design has been proposed by incorporating its functional (biological requirement) and fabrication constraint into the design processes. the proposed new methodology generates functionally gradient porosity along the hollowed scaffold architecture with desired level of control by combining two geometrically oriented consecutive layers. the resulting set of layers address the repeatable, interconnected and controllable pores. Modeling of the first layer starts with discretizing internal region by connecting ruling lines between internal and external features using a dynamic programming algorithm. these feature connecting ruling lines act as resolution for the proposed method. then by accumulating those ruling lines, the region has been divided into equal area sub-regions. In the second layer, the desired pore size and hence the porosity has been achieved by geometrically partitioning those sub-regions. And thus the combined set of layers achieves the desired controlled variational porosity along the scaffold architecture. To ensure a continuous and interconnected tool path, optimized zigzag pattern followed by a concentric spiral like optimal layers are generated based on the required biological and mechanical properties. Several examples will be presented to demonstrate the proposed methodology. the designed examples will also be fabricated layer-by-layer using a micro-nozzle biomaterial deposition system.

Pure lazy functional languages are a promising programming paradigm for harvesting massive parallelism, as their abstraction features and lack of side effects support the development of modular programs without unneeded serialization. We give a new formal message passing semantics for implicitly parallel execution of a lazy functional programming language, based on the intensional transformation that converts programs in functional style to a form that can be executed in a dataflow paradigm. We use rewriting logic to define the semantics of our parallel virtual machine and we use the Maude tool to formally analyze our model. We also briefly discuss a prototype parallel implementation of our model in Erlang. © 2011 ACM.
