GTPOM:: thermo-economic optimization of whole gas turbine plant

Trends towards distributed power generation and the deregulation of energy markets are increasing the requirement for software tools that optimize power generation plant design and operation. In this context, this paper describes the GTPOM (thermo-economic optimization of whole gas turbine plant) European project, funded in part through the European Commissions 5th Framework Programme, focusing on the development and demonstration of an original software tool for the thermo-economic analysis and optimization of conventional and advanced energy systems based on gas turbine plant. PSEconomy, the software tool developed during the GTPOM project, provides a thermo-economic optimization capability for advanced and more-conventional energy systems, enabling the complex trade-offs between system performance and installed costs to be determined for different operational duties and market scenarios. Furthermore, the code is capable of determining the potential benefits of innovative cycles or layout modifications to existing plants compared with current plant configurations. the economic assessment is performed through a complete through-life cycle cost analysis, which includes the total capital cost of the plant, the cost of fuel, O&M costs and the expected revenues from the sale of power and heat. the optimization process, carried out with a GA-based algorithm, is able to pursue different objective functions as specified by the User. these include system efficiency, through-life cost of electricity and through-life internal rate of return. three case studies demonstrating the capabilities of the new tool are presented in this paper covering a conventional combined cycle system, a biomass plant and a CO2 sequestration gas turbine cycle. the software code is now commercially available and is expected to provide significant advantages in the near and long-term development of energy cycles.

third generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) have just recently specified the use Raptor codes in their mobile broadcast file delivery engine. Until today, investigations of the applicability of these codes to the mentioned systems have been carried out by assuming almost exclusively quite simple loss models such as statistically independent radio packet losses. Furthermore, the combination and tradeoffs between physical layer parameters such as transmit power or physical layer for-ward error correction code rates in system design has been completely ignored. In this work we investigate the end-to-end system performance by analyzing the trade-off between physical layer parameters and application layer code. In particular we are interested in determining the optimal system operating points for optimized broadcast file delivery. Parameters such as power allocation, mobility model, physical layer Turbo code rate, raptor code expansion ratio are investigated and a single performance criteria is defined, namely the required energy to deliver a file to at least some high percentage of users. It is shown that typically considered system configurations with high transmit power and low physical layer code rates - resulting in low radio block loss rates - are in general suboptimal for efficient delivery. A careful tradeoff the system parameters can reduce the required resources in the order of a magnitude.

this paper describes the use of integrated multidisciplinary analysis and optimization of a race car model on a predefined circuit. the objective is the definition of the most efficient geometric configuration that can guarantee the lowest lap time. In order to carry out this study it has been necessary to interface the design optimization software modeFRONTIER with the following softwares: CATIA v5, a three dimensional CAD software, used for the definition of the parametric geometry;A. D.A. M. S./Motorsport, a multi-body dynamic simulation software;IcemCFD, a mesh generator, for the automatic generation of the CFD grid;CFX, a Navier-Stokes code, for the fluid-dynamic forces prediction. the process integration gives the possibility to compute, for each geometrical configuration, a set of aerodynamic coefficients that are then used in the multiboby simulation for the computation of the lap time. Finally an automatic optimization procedure is started and the lap-time minimized. the whole process is executed on a Linux cluster running CFD simulations in parallel.

this paper presents a new tool for the automatic generation of highly. parallelized Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters. In this approach we follow our PARO design methodology. PARO is a design system project for modeling, transformation, optimization, and synthesis of massively parallel VLSI architectures. the FIR filter generator employs during the design flow the following advanced transformations, (a) hierarchical partitioning in order to balance the amount of local memory with external communication, and (b), partial localization to achieve higher throughput and smaller latencies. Furthermore, our filter generator allows for design space exploration to tackle trade-offs in cost and speed. Finally, synthesizable VHDL code is generated and mapped to an FPGA, the results are compared with a commercial filter generator.

Cray X1 Fortran and C/C++ compilers provide a number of loop transformations, notably vectorization and multistrearning, in order to exploit the multistreaming processor (MSP) hardware resources and its high memory bandwidth. A Cray X1 node is composed of four MSPs, which in turn are composed of four single streaming processors (SSP). Each SSP contains a superscalar processing unit and two vector processing units. Compiler vectorization provides loop level parallelization and uses the vector processing hardware. Multistreaming code generation by the compiler permits execution across the SSPs of an MSP on a block of code. In this paper, we analyze overall impact of loop-level compiler optimization on a scientific application called Parallel Ocean Program (POP). POP has been extensively optimized for X1 by instrumenting the code using X1 compiler directives. We compare and contrast automatic and manual optimization schemes available on X1 and analyze their impact on the code performance and scalability. Our results show that the addition of compiler directives increases the average vector length, thereby improving the single node performance significantly. However, this code scales at a slower rate as the local workload volume decreases and the communication costs increase.

We present a novel code: Variable-Tail code to compress the test data, which is, proved to be better than the Golomb code. An efficient reordering algorithm(ERA) is proposed to optimize the distribution of run-lengths in the test data in order to improve the compression effectiveness. On other hand,since the pourer during testing is always higher than the normal functional mode, the power dissipated in the CUT must be reduced during testing which is omitted previously. the analysis and experiments have demonstrated that our ERA can significantly reduce the total testing power and average power dissipated in the CUT with no hardware penalty.
