Trace metal compounds enriching in fine particulates are emitted from combustion systems such as waste incurerators, coal combustors. Owing to the difficulties to capture the fine particulates by conventional particulate dust collection Systems, those are exhausted to the atmosphere and will cause adverse health. Although almost of sewage sludge is incinerated, it is sometimes highly contaminated by toxic trace metals. the present research focuses on the emission behavior and control of Pb, Cd and Cr compounds by sorbent addition in sewage sludge combustion. Experiments were conducted, using an electrically heated down-flow furnace operated at temperature of 1223K. Natural kaolin was used as a sorbent to capture trace metal compounds during combustion. A chemical equilibrium code was used to estimate phase characteristics and compounds of those trace metals in the sludge under the same conditions as the experimental. Both the results of experiment and calculation show that the sub-micron particles are enriched with lead and cadmium during combustion. Addition of kaolin is a suitable way to control Pb and Cd emission, whose particles size distributions appear to shift from sub-micron to coarse particles. Calculated results indicate that the presence of HCl has influence on the vaporization of Pb and Cd compounds.

Simultaneous multithreaded processors use shared on-chip caches, which yield better cost-performance ratios. Sharing a cache between simultaneously executing threads causes excessive conflict misses. this paper proposes software solutions for dynamically partitioning the shared cache of an SMT processor, via the use of three methods originating in the optimizing compilers literature: dynamic tiling, copying and block data layouts. the paper presents an algorithm that combines these transformations and two runtime mechanisms to detect cache sharing between threads and react to it at runtime. the first mechanism uses minimal kernel extensions and the second mechanism uses information collected from the processor hardware counters. Our experimental results show that for regular, perfect loop nests, these transformations are very effective in coping with shared caches. When the caches are shared between threads from the same address space, performance is improved by 16–29% on average. Similar improvements are observed when the caches are shared between threads from different address spaces. To our knowledge, this is the first work to present an all-software approach for managing shared caches on SMT processors. It is also one of the first performance and program optimization studies conducted on a commercial SMT-based multiprocessor using Intel’s hyperthreading technology. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Standard scheduling algorithms to optimize the resource allocation in a Time Division Duplex (TDD) consider only the traffic situation and the priority of different services. However it is necessary to take into account the time varying nature of wireless channels and the Power Control (PC) algorithms used to counteract interference limited systems like CDMA. PC can be Open Loop Power Control (OLPC) or Closed Loop Power Control (CLPC), the latter one is preferable especially in presence of a real time traffic and fast fading channels. Here, we propose new scheduling algorithm which allocate Up-Link (UL) and Down-Link (DL) slots in order to use efficiently CLPC, while the resource unit (code and slot) are selected taking into account quality of services requirements (e.g. delay) and the corresponding channel state.

3(rd) generation (3G) radio networks using WCDMA radio access technology will offer the customers services with higher bit rates than in nowadays 2(nd) generation networks. All users share the same frequency resource, therefore 3G networks are commonly believed to be interference limited. For this reason it is of utmost importance to exploit all possibilities in keeping the interference level as low as possible. One means for this, already used in 2G systems, is adjusting the downtilt of the antennas in a way, reducing the interference transmitted and received as much as possible, still ensuring the required coverage. In earlier studies ([1], [2]) it has been shown how careful radio network planning already in the preoperational phase can drastically increase 3G network performance. Optimal downtilt was found by applying a constant tilt to all cells in the network. the network consisted only of very high sites and therefore the gains of e.g. 40-50% in capacity were considered to be optimistic. the scope of the simultions for this paper therefore was to evaluate the gains in terms of capacity by optimizing the antenna tilt of WCDMA networks cell by cell in a more realistic environment, showing still gains of up to 20%.

the problem of joint data detection and channel estimation for the downlink of a CDMA system adopting aperiodic spreading codes is considered. the solution that is proposed here requires a pilot signal along with knowledge of the spreading code of the user of interest. Computer simulations confirm that the proposed strategy achieves excellent results.

Adaptive antennas arrays have been recognized as an excellent method to improve the performance of the next generation of wireless communication systems. this work describes the optimization of a novel array prototype with seven patch elements in a hexagonal arrangement. With this structure it is possible to configure the radiation pattern to obtain directional patterns with high directivity and gain. An electromagnetic simulation tool, ZELAND IE3D, was used to evaluate and optimize the antenna array design for applications at 1.9 GHz. the preliminary return loss measurements indicate that this hexagonal arrangement is suitable for wireless communications applications.

A decorrelator using the traditional linear equation solution has a computational complexity O(K/sup 3/) for a CDMA system with K active users. this paper introduces optimization-based decorrelating algorithms with a lower complexity O(K/sup 2/). Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can achieve the performance of the traditional decorrelator in a synchronous CDMA system on an AWGN channel.
