It is with greatpleasure that we present the proceedings of the 5th international symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC 2009), which was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. ISVC o?ers a common umbrella for the four main areas of visual c- puting includingvision,graphics,visualization,*** provide a forum for researchers, scientists, engineers, and practitioners throu- out the world to present their latest research ?ndings, ideas, developments, and applications in the broader area of visual computing. this year, the program consisted of 16 oral sessions, one poster session, 7 special tracks, and 6 keynote presentations. Also, this year ISVC hosted the third Semantic Robot Vision *** responseto the call for papers was verygood;wereceivedover320submissionsfor themainsymposiumfromwhich we accepted 97 papers for oral presentation and 63 papers for poster presen- tion. Special track papers were solicited separately through the Organizing and Program Committees of each track. A total of 40 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 15 papers for poster presentation in the special tracks. All papers were reviewed with an emphasis on potential to contribute to the state of the art in the ?eld. Selection criteria included accuracy and originality of ideas, clarity and signi?cance of results, and presentation quality. the review process was quite rigorous, involving two to three independent blind reviews followed by several days of discussion. During the discussion period we tried to correct anomalies and errors that might have existed in the initial reviews.

A fast algorithm is proposed for polygonal approximation of a digitized curve based on genetic evolution. the polygon is represented by a set of dominant points. the dominant points are identified as the points on the curve with local maximum curvatures. the optimization problem for the digitized curve with the approximating polygon is employing the genetic algorithm. thus, a chromosome is used to represent a polygon. the break point detection on the chromosome is conducted to reduce the computations for optimization. Experimental results are included to show the effectiveness of this method

recognition of handwritten numerals has gained much interest in recent years due to its various application potentials. the progress of handwritten Bangla numeral is well behind Roman, Chinese and Arabic scripts although it is a major language in Indian subcontinent and is the first language of Bangladesh. Handwritten numeral classification is a high-dimensional complex task and existing methods use distinct feature extraction techniques and various classification tools in their recognition schemes. Recently, convolutional neural network (CNN) is found efficient for image classification with its distinct features. In this study, a CNN based method has been investigated for Bangla handwritten numeral recognition. A moderated pre-processing has been adopted to produce patterns from handwritten scan images. On the other hand, CNN has been trained with the patterns plus a number of artificial patterns. A simple rotation based approach is employed to generate artificial patterns. the proposed CNN with artificial pattern is shown to outperform other existing methods while tested on a popular Bangla benchmark handwritten dataset.

Stochastic resonance has always been a research hotspot in the field of image processing. the ability of the nervous system to detect signals is closely related to nonlinear and collective behavior in neural mediators. Neuronal noise is the most significant factor influencing this ability, and it is a natural endogenous fluctuation in brain activity. Experimental and theoretical studies have shown that noise is beneficial, not harmful, for the normal functioning of the nervous system. In this regard, it is generally agreed that noise of appropriate intensity can participate in the rhythmic activity of the brain, and that noise-induced oscillations enhance the performance of weak signal processing, especially when the frequency of the signal is approximately noise-induced rhythmic oscillations. this behavior in the biological nervous system can be explained by the concept of “stochastic resonance”. Correspondingly, the stochastic resonance mechanism of neurons is used to denoise the image, which has a good effect. In this paper, we first introduce an image processing method using random resonance of neurons. then, the commonly used evaluation indicators in the field of image processing are sorted out. Finally, the development trend of image processing using random resonance of neurons is prospected.

Facial expression recognition became a very important and very challenging aera within past few years in computer science vision field. It (FER) a very hot and active topic for research. FER play interesting role in aera of computer vision processing. this paper reviews the different algorithms which is used in facial expression recognition. usually, Facial expression recognition has 3 Majour stages first one is preprocessing I.e., face detection second is Feature extraction or selection (the aim of this paper) and last one is classification. In this paper study we review some current work done for Facial expression recognition technique. we know that feature extraction method is very important step for image recognition so in this paper we see that after the preprocessing the images how feature extraction done, we see some technique like local binary pattern (LBP), Gabor filter etc. And also, this paper gives an evaluation of Majour characteristic feature extraction and based on that their performance in terms of accuracy and them limitations. arrangement of this FER paper is following in order: section I contain the introduction section II contains a sample process of facial expression recognition section III contains the different technique of feature extraction and section IV contains the review discussion and last section V contain the *** making these algorithms efficient and more effective feature extraction technique played an important role.

Day by Day, the trend of using social media(SM) has increased among the people. With the increasing rate, the use of Banglish(Merge of Bangla and English) and shortcut words has also being increased. In this research, Banglish and Shortcut words have been fully converted to English. For this type of conversation, we have used the CNNs method and the method consist of multiple layer and these layers are connected to each other. this method is considered to be the best method because it does not need any feature extraction. the convolutional neuron network is used in many areas such as image and pattern recognition, speech recognition, natural language processing and video analysis. In this research we have used CNN method because we have decided to use computer vision as some of the words are close to each other and at first we need to convert all the shortcut words into images for pre-processing the data. With the help of CNN method searched for the Banglish and shortcut words that people use for their daily conversation. At first we find the different representative of a single word and then we converted those shortcut and Banglish words to main word using CNNs method.

With the widely use of digital image, text location/detection is considered as a key part of the image text information extraction system. We have proposed a robust system for text detection in images. the proposed scheme uses a set of characteristics which are combined to build a large ones, it's based on texture features and connected components analysis. First, edge detection technique is used to detect all edges in the image, to preserve the most important structural features of that image by finding sharp contrasts, after that, we select all closed contours from detected edges. By the next we use texture information to discriminate text from non-text regions. Finally, we verify regions in order to reduce false alarms and to generate valid text regions. the evaluation is done on the challenging ICDAR 2003 robust reading and text locating database. the results show that our system can localize text of various font sizes and styles in complex background. Indeed the recall/precision curve of the proposed method proves that 0.95 Precision rate is obtained for recall rate value equals to 0.89 and the standard measure of quality f is equal to 0.92.

this paper discusses a visual attack to BPCS-Steganography (Bit-Plane Complexity Segmentation-Steganography) and presents a countermeasure. BPCS categorizes each small block within cover images into either a "noise-like region" or an "informative region" by means of the binary-image feature called complexity and replaces noisy blocks with the binary patterns mapped from the bit sequences of secret data. the binary patterns must be complex because it is replacing complex regions. If the binary patterns to be inserted are simple, then the logical operation called conjugate operation is applied that transforms a simple pattern to a complex pattern. We need to keep, for each block, the flag called a conjugation flag representing whether or not conjugation had been applied to correctly extract the embedded information. In the case where the conjugation flags must be embedded within cover images, we are unable to use the complexity thresholding for the embedding of the flags. thus the flags must be embedded into a fixed area. To this effect it is easy to recognize unnatural patterns on the LSB plane of stego-images. It can be used as a signature or a distinguishing mark between natural images and images with information embedded by BPCS. We propose secure BPCS which is robust against the visual attack. It is realized by assigning the meaning of the conjugation flag to a pixel of each block and making the specific rule to embed and extract it

Deep neural networks are extremely vulnerable due to the existence of adversarial samples. It is a challenging problem to optimize the robustness of the model to protect deep neural networks from the threat of adversarial samples. To improve the model robustness, an integrated detection model of adversarial samples is designed to detect the existence of adversarial samples, which consists of a multi-classification detector and five single-classification detectors to perform double-layer detection of adversarial samples and intercept the adversarial samples finally sent to the image classification model. the detection experiments were conducted on the CIFAR-10 dataset for the adversarial samples generated by five attack algorithms: FGSM, BIM, DeepFool, JSMA, and C&W, and the detection success rate for all types of adversarial samples reached over 98.96%. After that, secondary attack experiments were conducted on the model, and the detection success rate of the model for the second attack adversarial samples reached over 92.36%. It provides an efficient and robust optimization method for deep neural network models in adversarial environments. © 2022 ACM.

the potential of acoustic emission (AE) as a method of intelligent process monitoring is explored. It is shown that a number of tools are available to the user of acoustic emission, making it possible to apply the technique to a variety of problems. By way of example, the authors discuss a laboratory study in which acoustic emission events from a fatigue test are monitored and a large number of selected signals are digitally recorded. the event trends and signals are analyzed in order to discriminate between acoustic events associated with material defects and those produced by other benign sources. By the use of both physical arguments and pattern recognition techniques which are empirical or statistical in nature, these results are related to the failure processes taking place within the specimen.< >
