Our proposal has the following key features: 1) the separation of a distributed program into a pure algorithm (PurAl) and a distribution/communication declaration (DUAL). this yields flexible programs capable of handling different kinds of data/program distribution with no change to the pure algorithm. 2) Implicit or automatic handling of communication via externally mapped variables and generalizations of assignment and reference to these variables. this provides unified device independent view and processing of internal data and external distributed data at the user programming language level. 3) Programs need only know of the direct binds with distributed correspondents (mailbox driver, file manager, remote task, window manager etc.). this avoids the need for a central description of all the interconnections. the main short-range benefits of this proposal are to facilitate parallel computations. parallel programming is a fundamental challenge in computer science, nowadays. Improving these techniques will lead to simplify the programming, eliminate the communication statements, and unify the various communication by using an implicit method for the transfer of data which is becoming essential with the proliferation of distributed networked environment. We present 2 experiments of separation between PurAl and DUAL, using a preprocessor or an object-type library. this new approach might be of interest to both academic and industrial researchers.

In High Level Architecture (HLA) based distributed simulation, a federation is a set of federates, where each federate is normally executed sequentially. Our recent work on HLA-based distributed supply chain simulation shows that a federate with well above-par workload will become the performance bottleneck of the entire federation, since faster federates have to wait for the slower one to advance its simulation time. In this paper, we propose a parallel federate architecture which exploits the internal parallelism of a single federate. the parallel federate architecture is an integration of a parallel simulation protocol and HLA-based distributed simulation. A parallel federate can be executed on a SMP system to improve the performance of the entire federation. Our approach gains the advantages of both the interoperability, reusability and scalability of the HLA and faster execution of the parallel simulation protocol. © 2001 IEEE.

We consider the Gaussian elimination method on parallel distributed memory computers. A theoretical model for the performance prediction is developed. It takes into account the workload distribution and the communication overhead. We investigate the efficiency of the parallel Gaussian algorithm with matrices distributed in 1D and 2D block and cyclic layouts. the results are generalized for block-block and block-cyclic distributions. We find the condition when communications are overlapped by the computations. Using this analysis we propose a simple heuristic for scheduling Gaussian elimination tasks. We compare the efficiency of this scheduling algorithm with the efficiency of the block and cycling data distributions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

this paper presents an experimental comparison of dynamic partitioning techniques for blockwise parallel structured adaptive mesh refinement applications. A new partitioning technique, G-MISP, is described. Policies for the automatic selection of partitioner based on application and system state are outlined. Adaptive methods for the numerical solution to partial differential equations yield highly advantageous ratios for cost/accuracy compared to methods based upon static uniform approximations. distributed implementations offer the potential for accurate solution of physically realistic models of important applications. they also lead to interesting challenges in dynamic resource allocation, e.g. dynamic load balancing. the results show that G-MISP is preferable for communication dominated cases where the block graph has high granularity. Recommendations for appropriate partitioning techniques, given application and system state, are given. It was found that our classification model needs to be extended to accurately capture the behavior of the cases studied.

In this paper the parallel implementation of out-of-core Cholesky factorization is used to introduce the parallel Out-of-Core Linear Algebra Package (POOCLAPACK), a flexible infrastructure for parallel implementation of out-of-core linear algebra operations. POOCLAPACK builds on the parallel Linear Algebra Package (PLAPACK) for in-core parallel dense linear algebra computation. Despite the extreme simplicity of POOCLAPACK, the out-of-core Cholesky factorization implementation is shown to achieve up to 80% of peak performance on a 64 node configuration of the Cray T3E-600. the insights gained from examining the Cholesky factorization are also applied to the much more difficult and important QR factorization operation. Preliminary results for parallel implementation of the resulting OOC QR factorization algorithm are included. © 2001 IEEE.

the High Level Architecture (HLA) is a standard developed by the US Department of Defense (DoD), and is meant to establish interoperability among different types of simulations at multiple locations for the simulation of sometimes highly interactive activities. If there are several HLA compliant federates (simulations) that provide simulation at different levels of resolution, then it would be ideal to combine them into one federation so as to provide realistic training to soldiers of different ranks present within the same federation exercise. the issue of multi-resolution simulation systems thus comes into the picture. Aggregation!disaggregation is used to ensure proper interaction between federates of different levels of resolution. this paper explores the problems of the existing module-based approach to the implementation of aggregation!disaggregation in the HLA environment. Two new approaches and their pros and cons are discussed, and one of them is implemented and tested on a simple dual-resolution federation. A sample simulation run of one of the new approaches is also presented. © 2001 IEEE.

Electro-magnetic field analysis applications based on the Method of Moments can be used to simulate the emissions for electrical devices such as a printed circuit board, a combination of circuit boards and wire connecting boards, or even a cabinet. At the heart of such applications is a solver, which solves a symmetric indefinite dense linear system of size N assembled from the model of the electrical device. the main computational challenges lie in the solver stage, where an O(N3) computation is required for the direct solution of the linear system about a central frequency ωc. For the direct solution we use a general symmetric matrix factorization algorithm, requiring N3/3 + O(N2) FLOPs. this algorithm's efficiency is demonstrated by its parallel speedup of 5 for moderate sized matrices on an 8 node AP3000. Some of this cost can be amortized using the fast frequency stepping method, where the system can be solved for nearby frequencies ω by O(N2) iterative methods, using the solution at ωc as a preconditioner. Due to the high parallel efficiency of the direct method, the frequency stepping method reduced parallel solution time by a factor of 2 for moderate-sized matrices, with larger improvements expected for large matrices. © 2001 IEEE.

the Selectively Reliable Multicast Protocol (SRMP) provides an approach to reliable multicast that is specialized to distributed virtual simulation. SRMP operates in three modes of reliability: best-effort transmission of transient data that does not need reliable transport;reliable transmission of object state data;and timely, reliable transport of data to a single, dynamically determined receiver within the multicast group. this paper deals with the first two modes, which dominate SRMP network performance. Any multicast protocol, when used across wide area networks to share information among thousands of objects in a real time simulation, will create traffic flows with many complexities. In order to evaluate the merits of using SRMP, a mechanism to measure its performance across a network is necessary. this paper presents an approach to measure the bounds of performance of the SRMP in real time simulation environments. the approach is based on a Markovian model of object activity in the simulated environment, and is implemented in the context of a cluster of workstations that emulate wide-area network performance using our protocol. We present initial results of our SRMP evaluation in this environment. © 2001 IEEE.

MUMPS is a public domain software package for the multifron- tal solution of large sparse linear systems on distributed memory computers. the matrices can be symmetric positive definite, general symmetric, or unsymmetric, and possibly rank deficient. MUMPS exploits parallelism coming from the sparsity in the matrix and parallelism available for dense matrices. Additionally, large computational tasks are divided into smaller subtasks to enhance parallelism. MUMPS uses a distributed dynamic scheduling technique that allows numerical pivoting and the migration of computational tasks to lightly loaded processors. Asynchronous communication is used to overlap communication with computation. In this paper, we report on recently integrated features and illustrate the present performance of the solver on an SGI Origin 2000 and a CRAY T3E. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

We present a reflective decision control mechanism for dealing with synchronization and scheduling issues in a distributed computing environment. We present a component-based reflective architecture for assisting distributed objects in decision making. It enables autonomous entities to support reflective computation that requires a flexible means for managing the course of computation, resource allocation and scheduling. Such capability is critical to the successful implementation of distributed software that supports real-time and reactive/adaptive applications (e.g., robotics, manufacturing, and military systems). In many instances, these systems must be designed to monitor and manage complex systems in dynamic settings.
