In this paper, we discuss the runtime support required for the parallelization of unstructured data-parallel applications on nonuniform and adaptive environments. the approach presented is reasonably general and is applicable to a wide variety of regular as well as irregular applications. We present performance results for the solution of an unstructured mesh on a cluster of heterogeneous workstations.

One of most serious problems plaguing the World Wide Web today is that of broken hypertext links, which are a major annoyance to browsing users and also a cause of tarnished reputation and possible loss of opportunity for information providers. the root of the problem lies in the current Web architecture's lack of support for referential integrity. this paper presents a model for the provision of referential integrity for Web resources which supports resource migration and tolerates site and communication failures. the approach is object-oriented, highly flexible, completely distributed, and does not require any global administration. An attractive feature of our design is the provision of a lightweight mechanism which provides referential integrity, and which may be customised on a per resource basis to provide increased fault-tolerance and performance. Our system follows an evolutionary approach, supporting parallel operation with the existing Web, allowing users to gain the additional benefits of referential integrity while allowing continued access through trusted software components.

A universal spatial automaton, called WAVE, for highly parallel processing in arbitrary distributed systems is described. the automaton is based on a virus principle where recursive programs, or waves, self-navigate in networks of data or processes in multiple cooperative parts while controlling and modifying the environment they exist in and move through. the layered general organisation of the automaton as well as its distributed implementation in computer networks are discussed. As the automaton dynamically creates, modifies, activates and processes any knowledge networks arbitrarily distributed in computer networks, it can easily model any other paradigms for parallel and distributed computing. Comparison of WAVE with some known programming models and languages, and ideas of their possible integration are also given.

Discusses the emergent World Wide Web-based distributed environments for high-performance computing and communications (HPCC) on the National Information Infrastructure (NII) with the focus on Java as an enabling technology. We start with a review of the past, present and near-term future of the "Java phenomenon", exposed in the background of some related previous approaches towards a distributed interpretative virtual machine architecture. Next, we discuss the anticipated role of Java in building distributed Web-based computing environments. We outline an evolutionary path from the current Web technology "soup" towards "all-Java" systems and we illustrate this process in terms of the Northeast parallel Architectures Center (NPAC) Web technology prototypes (WebVM, WebFlow, Bridge-based Collaboratory) and selected applications (CareWeb, 3D Visible Human).

Existing parallel programming environments for networks of workstations improve the performance of computationally intensive applications by using message passing or virtual shared memory to alleviate CPU bottlenecks. this paper describes an approach based on message passing that addresses both CPU and I/O bottlenecks for a specific class of distributed applications on ATM networks. ATM provides the bandwidth required to utilize multiple I/O channels in parallel. this paper also describes an environment based on distributed process management and centralized application management that implements the approach. the environment adds processes to a running application when necessary to alleviate CPU and I/O bottlenecks while managing process connections in a manner that is transparent to the application.

the simulation of many-body, many-particle systems has a wide range of applications in areas such as biophysics, chemistry, astrophysics, etc. It is known that the force calculation contributes 90% of the simulation time. this is mainly due to the fact that the total number of interactions in the force is O(N/sup 2/), where N is the number of particles in the system. the fast multipole algorithm proposed by Greengard and Rokhlin (1987) reduces the time complexity to O(N). In this paper, we design an efficient, parallel fast multipole algorithm in 3D. For portability, our parallel program is implemented using the Message Passing Interface. Is it possible to obtain high performance for a computationally-intensive application using a LAN of workstations? In this paper, we attempt to answer this question, which is commonly asked by those researchers who have no access to parallel computers or supercomputers.

Evaluates the High Performance Fortran (HPF) language for the compact expression and efficient implementation of conjugate-gradient iterative matrix-solvers on high-performance computing and communications (HPCC) platforms. We discuss the use of intrinsic functions, data distribution directives and explicitly parallel constructs to optimize performance by minimizing communications requirements in a portable manner. We focus on implementations using the existing HPF definitions but also discuss issues arising that may influence a revised definition for HPF-2. Some of the codes discussed are available on the World Wide Web at http://***/hpfa/, along with other educational and discussion material related to applications in HPF.

We present a checkpointing mechanism for a DSM system that, in spite of being invisible to the programmer, is quite efficient and portable. It is efficient because it is nonblocking, coordinated and thus domino-effect free. It offers some portability because it is built on top of MPI and uses only the services offered by MPI and a POSIX compliant local file system. As far as we know, this is the first real implementation of such a scheme for DSM. Along with the description of the algorithms used, we present experimental results obtained in a cluster of workstations, and discuss many insights that came out of the implementation effort. We hope that our research shows that efficient, transparent and portable checkpointing is viable for DSM systems.

the paper describes the design and implementation of a solution to the constrained 2D cutting stock problem on a cluster of workstations. the constrained 2D cutting stock problem is an irregular problem with a dynamically modified global data set and irregular amounts and patterns of communication. A replicated data structure is used for the parallel solution since the ratio of reads to writes is known to be large. Mutual exclusion and consistency are maintained using a token based lazy consistency mechanism, and a randomized protocol for dynamically balancing the distributed work queue is employed. Speedups are reported for three benchmark problems executed on a cluster of workstations interconnected by a 10 Mbps Ethernet.
