Although many Data Mining tasks have been. parallelized and can thus be executed on dedicated clusters, few solutions currently exist to solve Data Mining problems on a grid or a non-specialized network of workstations. the current tendency is to focus on the use of grids and/or desktop grids in order to exploit any available workstations with no considerations of their physical positions. If a grid specific algorithm has some common characteristics with a dedicated-cluster algorithm, many constraints are inherent to the use of the grid. In particular, resource volatility and communications cost reduce the parallelism effectiveness. the DisDaMin project (distributed DAta MINing) revisits the data mining tasks and proposes new exploitable algorithms for grids. the DisDaMin mechanisms first implement a specific fragmentation of the data using clustering methods, anal then realize asynchronous collaborative techniques according to the specifics of execution on grids. the use of this fragmentation method makes it possible to carry out optimal local processing on each node, with a minimum of communications. Using this, we introduce the distributed algorithm DICCoop, an adaptation of DIC (see (3)). Simulations were performed to prove the efficiency of the proposed mechanisms and are hosted on the french national grid GRID5000 (part of the European CoreGrid). We analyse the impact of the numerous parameters on. optimization of parallel efficiency.

Coupling PC-based commodity technology with distributed computing methodologies provides an important advance in the development of single-user dedicated systems. Beowulf is a class of experimental parallel workstations developed to evaluate and characterize the design space of this new operating point in price-performance. A key factor determining the realizable performance under real-world workloads is the means devised for interprocessor communications. A study has been performed to characterize a family of interconnect topologies feasible with low cost mass market network technologies. Behavior sensitivities to packet size and traffic density are determined. Findings are presented which compare more complex segmented topologies to the earlier parallel 'channel bonded' scheme. It is shown that in many circumstances the more complex topologies perform better, and in some circumstances software routing techniques compare favorably to more expensive hardware switch mechanisms.

this paper presents an experience of Problem-based learning in a parallel Programming course. the course includes the basics of parallel Programming, from methodological and technological aspects to the analysis and design of parallel algorithms. the students work with an optimization problem in the field of parallel computing. the execution time and the energy consumption of a simplified master-slave scheme in a simplified heterogeneous system are optimized, so treating it as a bi-objective optimization problem, which is addressed with sequential, shared-memory, message-passing and hybrid parallel programming. In this way, the students follow the various parts of the syllabus of the course by working with a problem in which topics studied in previous courses are combined (green computing, computational systems architecture, optimization, heuristics), and this contributes to a deeper understanding of these topics and motivates the introduction of new concepts.

the paper presents how an advanced graph partitioning optimization method was implemented inside a novel distributed program design framework PEGASUS DA which provides system support for automatic global application states monitoring. In PEGASUS DA, execution control design of distributed applications is system-supported by program global state monitoring run-time. this support provides an automatic construction of user-defined relevant strongly consistent global application states, computing global control predicates on the constructed states, evaluation of these predicates and sending asynchronous control signals to application threads and processes to stimulate the desired global state-driven reactions. the presented graph partitioning optimization algorithm is based on user-defined mixed partitioning strategies. It includes a combined use of different graph partitioning methods and different criteria for definition and assessment of produced partitions. It runs on top of basic graph partitioning methods available inside the METIS partitioning tool. the partitioning is executed by distributed processes and threads controlled by global states monitoring provided by the PEGASUS DA framework. Its use allows easy design and testing of different graph optimization strategies, finding graph partitioning optimal methods and algorithm parameters. the graph partitioning methods presented in the paper are illustrated by experiments performed with partitioning of a number of benchmark graphs to show partitioning quality (from 5% to 30% of the improvement has been observed) and execution time assessment of the proposed approach.

In this paper, we consider the performance of serial distributed detection in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) under the assumption that the local decisions made by sensors are transmitted over noisy channels. Different from the parallel fusion, where the local results are directly sent to the fusion center, in serial fusion, local results are transmitted to the fusion center through multi-hop, short-range communications. We derive a fusion decision rule for serial signal detection, which takes the channel noise into account. And the simulation results show that the performance of serial distributed detection is inferior to that of parallel distributed detection, especially when the number of sensors is large. However, serial distributed detection utilizes short-range, multi-hop transmission, so it can be used as an energy-efficient distributed detection scheme for wireless sensor networks.

the rigorous coupled-wave analysis of two-dimensional gratings is revived. parallel computing method is introduced in the codes based on RCWA. Hybrid computation using GPU with CPU is used to improve the efficiency of the RCWA simulation program, there are combination of highly parallel computing ability of GPU, and the fast serial computing ability of CPU. A typical calculation for 2-D grating shows that the computing speed can be accelerated by using the parallel computing method. the test used two CPU based math libraries-LAPACK, MKL, and the GPU code we have built. In this test, both single process and multi process are used in the same platform.

We present parallel techniques on hypercubes for solving optimally a class of polygon problems. We thus obtain optimal O(log n)-time, n-processor hypercube algorithms for the problems of computing the portions of an n-vertex simple polygonal chain C that are visible from a given source point, computing the convex hull of C, testing an n-vertex simple polygon P for monotonicity, and other related problems as well. Previously it was not known how to achieve these complexity bounds on hypercubes, one of the main difficulties being that there is no known optimal sorting hypercube algorithm that achieves these bounds. In fact these are the first optimal geometric hypercube algorithms that do not assume that the input is given already sorted by x or y coordinates. the hypercube model we use is the standard one, with O(1) local memory per processor, and with one-port communication.

computing is being transformed to a model consisting of services that are commoditised and delivered in a manner similar to utilities such as water, electricity, gas, and telephony. In such a model, users access services based on their requirements without regard to where the services are hosted. Several computing paradigms have promised to deliver this utility computing vision and they include Grid computing, P2P computing, and more recently Cloud computing. the latter term denotes the infrastructure as a “Cloud” in which businesses and users are able to access applications from anywhere in the world on demand. Hence, Cloud computing can be classed as a new paradigm for the dynamic creation of next-generation Data Centers by assembling services of networked Virtual Machines (VMs). thus, the computing world is rapidly transforming towards developing software for millions to consume as a service rather than creating software for millions to run on their PCs.

One of the most significant issues in building general purpose massively parallel computers is the integration of computation and communication in an efficient and cost-effective manner. this paper presents a way of integrating computation and communication from the viewpoint of the processor architecture. It firstly states the concept of RICA, Reduced Interprocessor-Communication Architecture, which means the simplified and fused structure of communication and computation. Hardwired simple direct invocation of threads, and fusion of execution pipelines and message handling pipelines are the mechanisms for RICA.

distributed algorithms are now present in many computing activities. the price decline of computer hardware, increase in speed of communication, the versatility of the Internet, and the advancement of network technology all have contributed immensely to the incredible growth and importance of distributed computing. therefore, even an undergraduate is now expected to know at least the basics of distributed algorithms. this paper describes the experience and performance of students who are introduced to distributed algorithms in an undergraduate Algorithms course. the paper shows that for teaching new concepts, providing in-class examples should be emphasized more for effective student learning. It is more important compared to prior knowledge of similar concepts. © 2021 IEEE.
