A model for scheduling in wide area systems is described. the model is federated and utilizes a collection of local site schedulers that control the use of their resources. the wide area scheduler consults the local site schedulers to obtain candidate machine schedules. A set of issues and challenges inherent to wide area scheduling are also described and the proposed model is shown to address many of these problems. A distributed algorithm for wide area scheduling is presented and relies upon information made available about the resource needs of user jobs. the wide area scheduler will be implemented in Legion, a wide area computing system developed at the University of Virginia.

One of NASA's research and development satellite communications projects is the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) program. Applications utilizing high speed networks will be developed using satellite links. One such application is a distributed coupled global climate model. Climate models to study phenomena such as El Nino have been extremely useful in developing predictions and understanding global climate change. the high cost of running extended simulations necessary to substantiate theories can be reduced by using a network of supercomputers. A coupled ocean-atmosphere model has been implemented on a network of three Cray supercomputers.

Workstation based distributed computing environments are getting popular in both academic and commercial communities, due to the continuing trend of decreasing cost/performance ratio and rapid development of networking technology. However, the workload on these workstations is usually much lower than their computing capacity, especially with the ever increasing computing power of new hardware. As a result, the resources of such workstations are often under utilized and many of them are frequently idle. A preemptive process migration facility can be provided, in such a distributed system, to dynamically relocate running processes among the component machines. Such relocation can help cope with dynamic fluctuations in loads and service needs, improve the system's fault tolerance, meet real time scheduling deadlines, or bring a process to a special device. the paper presents a process migration subsystem for tolerating process and node failures on a workstation based environment. the design and implementation of the subsystem are also discussed.

Current advances in processor technology, and the rapid development of high speed networking technology, such as ATM, have made high performance network computing an attractive computing environment for large-scale high performance distributed computing (HPDC) applications. However, due to the communications overhead at the host-network interface, most of the HPDC applications are not getting the full benefit of high speed communication networks. this overhead can be attributed to the high cost of operating system calls, context switching, the use of inefficient communication protocols, and the coupling of data and control paths. We present an architecture and implementation for a low-latency, high-throughput message passing tool, that we refer to as the NYNET (ATM wide area network testbed in New York state) Communication System (NCS), which can support a variety of HPDC applications with different Quality of Services (QOS) requirements. NCS uses multithreading to provide efficient techniques that overlap computation and communication. NCS uses read/write trap routines to bypass traditional operating system calls. this reduces latency and avoids using inefficient communication protocols. By separating data and control paths, NCS eliminates unnecessary control transfers. this optimizes the data path and improves performance. Benchmarking results show that the performance of NCS is at least a factor of two better than the performance of corresponding p4 and PVM primitives.

this paper describes the design and the prototyping of a compiling tool for the automated implementation of distributed applications: ALFred. this compiler starts from the formal specification of an application written in ESTEREL and then integrates end-to-end communication functions tailored to the application characteristics (described in the specification); it finally produces a high performance implementation. the paper describes the communication architecture associated with the approach. the compiler consists of a control compiler, also called ALF compiler, and a data manipulation compiler (the ILP compiler) that combines data manipulation functions in an efficient way (the ILP loop). the ALFred compiler has been designed to allow the development and the analysis of non-layered high performance communication architectures based on ALF and ILP.

Load balancing has been extensively studied by simulation and positive results were acheived in most of the research. With the increasing availability of distributed systems, a few experiments have been carried out on different systems. these experimental studies either depend on task initiation or task initiation plus task migration. We present the results of a 0 study of load balancing using a centralized policy to manage the load on a set of processors; it was carried out on an Amoeba system which consists of a set of 386s, linked by 10 Mbps Ethernet. the results on one hand indicate the necessity of a load balancing facility for a distributed system. On the other hand the results question the impact of using process migration to increase system performance under the configuration used in our experiments.

We use the term ubiquitous supercomputing to refer to systems that integrate low and mid range computing systems, advanced networks, and remote high end computers with the goal of enhancing the computational power accessible from local environments. Such systems promise to enable new applications in areas as diverse as smart instruments and collaborative environments. However, they also demand tools for transporting code between computers and for establishing flexible, dynamic communication structures. We propose that these requirements be satisfied by enhancing the Java programming language with global pointer and remote service request mechanisms from a communication library called Nexus. Java supports transportable code; Nexus provides communication support. We explain how this NexusJava library is implemented and illustrate its use with examples.

this paper describes the design of a distributed system built using Java that supports peer-to-peer communication among processes spread across a network. We identify the requirements of a software layer that supports distributed computing, and we propose a design that meets those requirements. Our primary concerns are (I) the identification, specification, and implementation of software components that can be composed in different ways to develop correct distributed applications; (2) reasoning about the components systematically; and (3) providing services to the components. this paper deals with the last of these concerns. though our implementation uses Java, the fundamental ideas apply to any object-oriented language that supports messaging and threads. Alternative implementations use such languages coupled with object request brokers or remote procedure invocation mechanisms.

High speed wide area networks are expected to enable innovative applications that integrate geographically distributed, high performance computing, database, graphics, and networking resources. However, there is as yet little understanding of the higher level services required to support these applications, or of the techniques required to implement these services in a scalable, secure manner. We report on a large scale prototyping effort that has yielded some insights into these issues. Building on the hardware base provided by the I-WAY, a national scale asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network, we developed an integrated management and application programming system, called I-Soft. this system was deployed at most of the 17 I-WAY sites and used by many of the 60 applications demonstrated on the I-WAY network. We describe the I-Soft design and report on lessons learned from application experiments.

the Binding Architecture is an open architecture for building multimedia networks that must guarantee quality of service (QOS). We explore the notion of a service in the Binding Architecture and propose a conceptual model for building scalable multimedia distribution services based on it. We begin first by examining the relation between resources, their abstractions and the services that can be built from them and use this to derive a general model for binding. Based on this model, we identify a general set of capabilities required for building any multimedia distribution service. We also describe how these capabilities can be incorporated into our view of the service creation process. Finally, we augment our discussion with the description of an example service which we have developed using this paradigm.
